I may buy some ramekins in the near future. I think the colored ones are so pretty, but I'm curious what you all think about using them. Do they take away from the food presenation? Or enhance it?

I prefer and have the white ones myself -- think it's really a matter of preference though. :) Welcome to the boards!

I recently bought some ramekins (the white ones) and also had a package of 2 creme brulees in the freezer from Trader Joes. When I went to make one I realized that they come in nice little ramekins that can be reused! I think they cost $3.50 for two (and two creme brulees!). May save yourself some money if you have a TJ's around.

Were the TJ creme brulees good? I saw them the other day and seriously thought about buying them
Mine are white, but my custard cups are blue. White are so classic that you can't go wrong, but some of the colors look so great too. I think my mom's thing for bowls rubed off on me. ;)

I thought they were good. Not as good as what you'd get in a restaurant though. I want to try making creme brulee from a recipe to see if they come out a little better. I recently made the Meyer Lemon and Rosemary Brulees from this month's issue and was very disappointed.

I have (and prefer) the white as well. Another good place to look is HomeGoods, TJ Maxx, Marshalls, or someplace like that. THey often have a variety of them.

I agree, they're good but not great. I have a great, very simple Creme Brulee recipe, if you're interested...

Like men's jockey shorts, only white is acceptable. Everything else is declasse, even more so if they're lined with gold. ;)

I'll chime in for the white since I have a set that I've been using for years.

Here you go - hope you like it! :)
Creme Brulee
7 egg yolks
7 T sugar
3-1/2 cups heavy cream
1 t vanilla
extra sugar for sprinkling the tops
Heat cream and vanilla until very hot. Beat eggs with sugar until light and creamy. SLOWLY add hot cream to egg mixture and stir well. Pour mixture into 6 ramekins. Place cups in a 13x9 baking pan filled halfway up with water. Bake at 350 for 45 minutes. Remove from oven and cool, then refrigerate. When serving, I pull them out of the refrigerator about a half-hour before serving, and then immediately before serving, sprinkle about 1/2 t of sugar on top of each cup and broil until golden brown and crunchy.
To put them over the top ... add 1 tsp of grated semi-sweet chocolate in the bottom of each ramekin before pouring in the creme brulee - you'll have a yummy surprise at the bottom of each.

Shoot, that completely confirms my declasse dilettante status.
I have three varieties. Black (which are my favorites as they make golden topped brulees, berries, and mini soufflés look beautiful) bright blue and lime green. The blue and green ones look especially pretty with fruit and yogurt in them. I think I got the black ones at TJMaxx on clearance and the blue and green came from Target. I suppose they will go out of style someday, at least the blue and green ones, but they were inexpensive enough to be replaceable.

You can't go wrong with white. That's what color mine are.

I'm another vote for white - I used to have some coloured ramekins, but got sick of them after a few years. But I love my 1-cup white Maxwell & Williams ramekins.

I have larger white ones (received as a gift), and smaller red ones (W-S Amele Henry [sp?]). I love them both, and use them for different recipes.
