I was just on my deck grilling steaks for dinner when I heard the unmistakable sound of the ICE CREAM TRUCK!! Summer must be right around the corner :)

Sounds of summer:
Me, whining to DH how miserable I am; how I cannot wait till October is here; how I want to blast the A/C in March...in Wisconsin, because it hit 76 (for crying out loud it's still March!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)
I can't wait till it's October :p :D
I can't wait till we build our new home and the horrible heat of summer never (hopefully!) reaches us again :D ;)

One of my friends has this as her cell phone ring, so are you sure it was the truck? ;) :)
I am so looking forward to summer. How I envy my back neighbors who are moving back to their home state, NC. :(

The ice cream truck has been here for the last month (at least). One of the advantages of living in CA :D

Ice cream truck! Wow. The only sounds I am hearing that make me think of summer are the frogs and the lawnmowers. :)

Flies buzzing and the elastic twitch of muscles under horses' hides. (Hey, I work & will soon live on a horse ranch. What can I say?)
Whitewater! Rushing in the night just downstream from my tent, tingling nerves with the thought of tomorrow...
And, of course, the ice cream truck. :) (Hmm, won't be hearing that much out at the ranch, though. Oh well! I'd give up ice cream for horses any day.)

Ahhh, summer. For me it would be the sound of straight pipes. :D

My kids can go without hearing me calling them, but they can't go without hearing that truck!;) :)

OK, I'll bite . . . what are straight pipes? Is this a plumbing issue, or some kind of musical instrument?
I didn't hear the ice cream truck, but I was driving behind it yesterday.

<sigh> Me too. :D
Tree frogs are another one. Creepy to look at, but I love their "music". :D

Crickets, bullfrogs and LOTS of traffic on our street. (It's an arterial in a resort area.)

But not at the same time, I hope... frogs and lawnmowers do NOT play well together! Eeeewwwwww!!! ;) :D
For me, sounds of summer include flip-flop, flip-flop (my shoes!), and the sound of ice tinkling in my margarita glass (12.5 more weeks and counting 'til I can have my "on-the-rocks with salt!"
Other than that, the primary sound of summer is the air-conditioner. :)

We have had three days of the ice cream man! Make him go away! I don't mind summer, but my kids freak each time they hear him. They want ice cream! Oh, and we have had three different ones come by.
I, however, don't like the sound. They drive around for hours. one of them has this awful, creepy music and they're so loud!
I prefer the smells of summer- people grilling burgers and steaks, the smell of the flowers and fresh cut grass. Those bring back memories.

And why, I wonder, do they always seem to come right before dinner?

My across-the-street neighbors blasting the Grateful Dead every Friday from 5 until about 10---which isn't late, but it just of totally wipes out my nice peaceful, decompress with a glass of wine after the long week and listen to the sounds of nature idea......(and why did it have to be the Dead? Couldn't it be Motown? Honestly, I could deal with straight up rock n' roll better than 5 hrs of hte freaking Dead every week.....)

Yes, I wonder that, too! Evil, evil ice cream man.

Come on over! We'll have a lovely glass of wine on my deck and I'll play any music you want. We have a VAST collection of CDs (actually, now all the stuff is on DH's IPOD) most of which is rock, soft rock and Motown. NO Grateful Dead to be found anywhere :)

One sound of summer for me is the "ch-ch-ch-ch-chchchchchch" of the sprinkler in the back yard. :) We also live pretty close to a park and I can often hear the kids playing down there when I have my windows open.
Sounds of kids riding their bikes up and down the street, the thud-thud of a basketball in someone's driveway...the soft summer rain on the roof after I'm in bed. Those are all sounds of summer for me.
Of course, we have to get through the snowstorm that is predicted for Sunday, first.

There are sooo many wonderful sounds of summer; however, the most horrendous sound to me is the Cicada Bugs! EEECCH - First they make this annoying chirping sound and then you find these big, ugly, black carcasses lying around all over the place. Did I already say EEECCH?

I love Cicadas, but then for some reason I never actually see them. I only hear them! The ice cream truck has been doing its rounds here too, but because of some new law, this may be the last summer we hear them...unless they decide to ignore the law. See, Scrooge doesn't come out only for Christmas. A Scrooge is a Scrooge is a Scrooge all year round. So ice cream trucks have been deemed as 'noise pollutants'. How on earth am I supposed to get my money on time and run downstairs if I don't hear them coming????

The first sound of summer will be on May 27...the sound of school buses leaving our school parking lot for the last time until fall. That will be followed by the squeal of the teachers' tires as we head to lunch with margaritas!
The first sound of almost summer was a couple of weeks ago when I heard the hummingbird wings near my head! They were dive-bombing me because I was too close to their feeder.

.....and for those drivers, the sound of the windows on those buses being shut when the buses are finally parked for the summer!:D

Like Wallycat, it'll be my whine that it's time to put in the ACs! One night this past week, it was getting dangerously close, but it cooled off a bit.
No ice cream trucks here yet, but when they come before dinner, it's ok. They're only young once and every now and again, we indulge and do things backwards. Remember, life's uncertain, it dessert first. :D
And not a sound, but a sight of Spring/Summer... we live in a lake community, and the first sight of the warm season are the rowboats on the lake. I did a blog entry about it the other day. Here's the pic. (http://sweetnicks.blogspot.com/2005/04/spring-is-here-and.html)

This has been a great thread. I think we could do others based on other senses -- sights, tastes, smell, touch (the warm wind?).

Kay - What a nice idea to expand on this thread! OK -
TASTES OF SUMMER to me are:
Hot dogs right off the grill
Potato Salad (don't know why, it just tastes better in the summer!)
Watermelon, cherries, plums, peaches, nectarines.....YUM
Iced Tea - including Long Island Iced Tea :)

Just got back from Florida so I am already spolied with a summer feeling!!! However, it was nice to leave with snow on the ground and come back to it being gone. As the limo was taking us home last night, we rolled down the windows and could actually hear Peepers!! Gotta love it!
Jodi
p.s. only in the 40's - 50's the next few days but there are Peepers none the less! :D
