Congratulations! This is the first year in about 7 that we didn't request an extension! Our accountant was shocked and amazed! And he got right on them for us! They were put in the mail last Friday!

Thanks for the wonderful job all of the CPA's do and for their families putting up with our neediness at this time!:D

Shameless gloating...

I'm a CPA, but I don't do taxes (other than my own) :D I do internal controls and compliance. Although I have been known to use, "It's getting close to April 15 and I'm a CPA..." to get out of certain gatherings. :o

Oh, dang. I haven't done my own taxes yet. What am I doing on the CLBB, I better open up TaxCut and get crackin'

Well, unfortunately, this CPA is up and 'attum bright and early this morning.. The days are long and the nights are short right now... UGH!!!!

As my treat to myself for surviving another tax season, on the 16th I have scheduled an hour massage, nice dinner with DBF, and the symphony. That is of course, if I even make it out of bed on Saturday! :D

And as another treat for myself, I'm in the market for a new position - outside of public accounting. So far, I have had quite a bit of luck and should be hearing from two companies later this week. PLEASE keep your fingers crossed for me!

Until after 4/15,

Jamie

Good luck, Jem. When my husband and I started dating, he was in the corporate setting and tax season was irrelevant. Since he bought his own practice, I've learned the true meaning of the term! On the plus side, he can take a week off after tax season and we can celebrate!

If only our tax structure were consumption based, rather than productin based, the need for all these CPA's would be greatly reduced.

BTW, doesn't it strike anyone that there is something fundamentally wrong with our tax structure that it takes a specialist to understand it?

Funny enough, when I tell people my background is in accounting, they always just assume that I do taxes and that I have the typical "busy season" in April.

Never mind that I'm a budget analyst in a pharmaceutical company operating on a Jan-Dec calendar!

I passed the CPA exam and initially hoped to work in public accounting so I'd be licensed, but after having friends work in public accounting, I'm glad I didn't go that route. And don't get me started on tax laws....

I have grumped about that exact thing before. Having taken income tax classes in college (and then I took the H&R Block tax course a few years back) it made me realize that I only knew enough to be dangerous. To really understand the tax laws, you pretty much need to do it full time.

Scout1222, I totally agree with everything you said! I am a non-tax accountant and people always assume I am current on tax laws. Not likely! :)

Well, even as a tax accountant, I don't see how anyone could know all the tax law.. WAY too much, and WAY too confusing. And they are constantly chaning - too much for one person to keep up with.

I got into accounting and then public as a way to support myself - as a single female, I figured I could always get a job with a background in accounting. One thing led to another, and now I have those wonderful letters behind my name.

After about 7 years of it, I am completely over it, and ready to move on to corporate. Now that I have the public background, and my masters degree, and my CPA, I am finding out I am quite marketable. :D

I received one offer today, and am anxiously waiting on another on Friday (after a final meeting with a sr. vp - say a prayer for me on this one! I really want it!) and then should hear back from another company by Monday on where I stand (decision will be made by next Friday). So, one way or another, my days in public are quite numbered - breaking out the short-timers calendar any day now.

Okay, just needed to see what was going on in the rest of the world and to vent a bit - back to my late night tax return world... UGH!

Admittedly I'm only administrative support and I managed to get through the chaos almost unscathed until yesterday when a client, a "freebie" favor, mind you, called and told the boss that there was a taco recipe attached to the back of her return!

Who, me?

He only got ticked off when I asked which recipe it was and was she going to mail it back.

I'm glad it's over.

LOL, Bob!

My accountant puts a copy of my returns in a folder and attaches all of the paperwork I sent him behind the returns. I flipped through it when I got my tax return back from him this year, and I noticed a recipe stapled in there! I clearly recognized it as one I had photocopied from a book. I must have sent it to him with my tax papers and he just stuck it right in there and sent it back to me! :D :o

Too funny, Bob--I'd be thrillled if ours came back with a recipe attached (a little bonus?). Obviously, this was NOT a kindred spirit who would call your boss!!!

Glad all of you are getting a rest...

What type of job is it? Are you staying with tax or going with something else? Good luck!! Let us know what happens. :)

A friend of mine (she's an utralsound technician) told me she recently read an article that accounting is the new "hot" profession. Funny to think of accounting as sexy. :p Then she said, "Now wonder you've been able to change jobs so many times." :o

I think that the Sarbanes-Oxley Act is the Full Employment act for accountants. Geez, have a few letters by your name and the salary goes way up. Makes me glad that I did did become a CPA. And to think I almost didn't do it.

You know.. I love having multiple offers for career opportunities!

I got the offer yesterday for the second position (the one I really wanted - YEAH!) It is a little less money than the first, but the benefits are much better, and I think that there is more growth opportunity with them. So.... I ACCEPTED!!!!! YEAH!!!

The position itself is a "Sr. Staff Acct", and it will be MUCH different than my public experience. At the firm, we do some audit (GAAP based) work, but not much. This position will be all GAAP - so I need to get caught up on that side of things. Once I get acclimated to the position, I will have some supervisory responsibilities as well - something I was really looking to get. I'm really looking forward to the change.

So, before I left the office yesterday, I turned in my resignation letter to the Sr. Partner. "Happy 4/15, and here's my resignation".. We talked for a bit, and he understands my position - I had a long talk with all of the partners about it a few weeks ago, so I think they were somewhat expecting it. I did say that I would help out some next tax season - PART TIME - if they needed some help. And he was appreciative of that. We will see though. :-)

Anyway, my 4/15 was VERY good.. Finish tax season, get a good job offer, resign from current position, etc..... AH!!!!!!

Now, on to my massage at 1p!!! YEAH!!!!!!

I'll keep everyone posted on the job once I get into it!

Jamie,

Congratulations on your new job! Doesn't it feel good to have new and exciting possibilities on the horizon? I am in the same place and can barely contain my excitement. Anyhow, enjoy your massage, you deserve it! I've not needed a cpa to do my taxes before but this year I'll have 2 states and 3 jobs along with moving expenses to deal with so I think I think next tax season I'll be going that direction.

Bob and Laura, that cracked me up about the recipes!

Best wishes on the new job!
