View Full Version : Personal Trainers - What Are You Paying?

I just had a (free) consultation with a personal trainer who is a franchise owner in this outfit: www.fitnesstogether.com They are not a gym per se, their 'schtick' is you go to their facility and they work one on one with you. The consultation (supposedly a $149 value) I had today involved being measured/weighed and put through several tests to determine my body fat, endurance and all kinds of wonderful things (well, in my case not so wonderful - but not so awful either :) ) She then took all the stats from the eval, plugged them into a computer program and out popped my fitness situation. Their rates sounded high to me: $80 for a single session (of about an hour and 15 minutes to an hour and a half) and the rates go down from there depending on how many you buy. So am I out of touch and this is the going rate nowadays? I'm gym shopping at the moment and am leaning towards just hiring a trainer at whatever facility I end up joining. What think you, O Wise Ones?

A few years ago, I hired a wonderful personal trainer. I was paying $300 for a package of five 1-hour sessions.

At the time, I thought I was probably paying too much, but it seemed worth it because I desperately needed to find some sort of exercise program I could stick with, and I wasn't doing very well on my own. Since then, I've talked with other people around here who paid similar amounts for comparable services, so I guess I wasn't overpaying -- at least, not by much.

I stopped the sessions because after DS arrived, the money became more of an issue, as well as the logistics for child-care, etc. I sometimes think I'd like to find a way to make it work again, though, because it really did help keep me on track.

Thanks Helene. I know I definitely want to do this. I did it years ago through my gym (the one I'm trying to ditch because I think it's gone downhill, changed 'personality' and no longer suits me) and it was some of the best money I've ever spent. If I recall correctly it was dirt cheap then. I've been having a hard time being consistent about my exercise since we were repatriated and I really need somebody to give me a boost, I just don't know if this place is 'it' and I was interested to see what other people who've done this have been paying before I decide who to give my business to.

Hi Linda, I think that memartha was just talking about the same company not so long ago. I don't have time to search for the thread right now, but it was definitely within the last couple of weeks, and there was alot of good info there.

Thanks Kristine. I searched but wasn't able to come up with a thread referencing this outfit. I sent Martha a PM.

Here (http://community.cookinglight.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=72320&highlight=trainer) is the thread from a few weeks back.

(I remembered lurking on it to see if a personal trainer would be the way for me to go)

ETA: it looks like a different company that the one you looked at, but did list a few different prices, to give a comparison.

My only advice is this: if you are going to join a new gym anyways you might be better off getting one there who will show you a routine on the actual equipment that will be available to you. If you work out in their gym, then switch - you may have to develop your routine all over again.

My gym just had a super special - 4 hour long session for $99. Often there are huge discounts if you sign up when you join. But I think they are usually $55 an hour, a little less if you buy in a package.
