DH's birthday is May 20, so he is taking the release date as his own personal gift from George Lucas.

the news showed last night a long line of people already camping out at the gromans chinese theatre, but they said they were in trouble because it actually opens at a theater across town.

Cant wait!

DH is also patiently waiting. His Birthday is May 18th, so this works out perfectly.

If I want to go too, I better start finding a sitter.

I have a friend who sewed herself and awesome Jedi costume. I think she also fashioned herself a pretty cool light saber using PVC or assorted other tubing. But then I think she went and bought one of those super-cool light sabers that look like the real thing - I think they run over $250.

Yeah, she's just a little bit into Star Wars..... :) It's fun to see what she'll have next.....

DH & I were just invited to an Episode 3 opening party where we have to come in costume!! (Hmmm... how do you make an R2D2 costume?)

It's so easy to throw together a Star Wars costume, especially if you want to go with something from the earlier episodes. Think of the characters in the Mos Eisly Cantina or Jabba's palace.

Here is a picture of a couple of thrown together costumes (http://www.boston-baden.com/hazel/Pix/p.cgi?2002+1219-2+dawe022.jpg) One is Tattooine-like, just some sand-colored clothing; the other is kind of bounty hunterish, a bunch of stuff from thrift stores and a toy gun.

Here (http://www.boston-baden.com/hazel/Pix/p.cgi?2002+1409-7+swii15.jpg)'s another one.

Try to put things in layers, if possible. Even just a tan poncho and a pair of boots will give the suggestion of Star Wars when you're with a whole group.

Since I'm showing Star Wars costumes, I'll plug the ones I've actually sewn:

Pilots (http://www.project-insomnia.com/colleen/costumes/pilot.html), which can be mostly made from existing jumpsuits (easy).

Episode 1-3 Jedi (http://www.project-insomnia.com/colleen/costumes/jedi.html)

Obiwan Kenobi (http://www.project-insomnia.com/colleen/costumes/obiwan.html)

Escher, if you really want Stormtrooper armor, let me know. If you're willing to assemble and paint the pieces, it's cheaper to buy the "kit" than the finished product. It's even cheaper if you build your own vacu-form machine, but even DH hasn't gone that far yet. :D

Yes, I'm willing to do the legwork...I found one website that supposedly had how-to instructions... but had some gaps in the process that I was wary of. (and I wasn't that pleased w/ their end product)

If you have any links or such....by all means PM them.

the important aspect for me is _quality_ I don't mind spending time or money (up to one or two hundred $'s) for a qood product, but what I've seen so far seems...lacking.

By the way, is anyone else really rooting for a dark, dismal and violent episode 3? I mean, I want to see the utopion republic become corrupted under Palpatines cruel hand, I want to see the Jedi Council destroyed, and really give a good reason why Yoda and Obi-wan have to go into hiding--and Annakin's fall must be Shakespearean in it's tragedy.... only out of the ashes of an utterly corrupted republic does episode 4 become the saga it is....

It better be dark, brooding, and dismal!

*****Spoiler Alert for those that haven't seen Episode 4: A New Hope****

Everybody dies, so that can't be cheery. We know for sure that Yoda, Obiwan, Darth, the Emporer, Annikin's Step-brother and his wife, Bail Organa, and Amidala's babies survive...but bye-bye jedi!

Lucas has said that this one will not be for kids.

Escher, I'll PM you the information, but it might be a couple of weeks to get it together.

What you see online may look low quality because the vacu-form pieces really do look cheap, but that's what the costumes are actually made of. Once they're put together and painted, they look way better. I'll send you links for the highest quality items, though.

Colleen- I knew we could count on you for costume ideas! ;) Thanks for the suggestions- and photos. Now I have some inspiration. I'll have to start scrounging and/or shopping.

Well, I hope so because I think the first two have been horrible!!! (Edited out a more crass word). Or am I just getting too old to find that little teenaged pipsqueak (i.e. Natalie Portman's love interest - what is the actor's name anywho?) at all sexually attractive?

The movies were pretty bad. DH and I found them fun as events.

You're supposed to be able to see Luke (whiny) in his dad, and you have to see how he'd be unlikeable in the future, but I guess it would have been way better to have someone that made you want him, even though he was bad. Then you could kind of understand Amidala.

Heh. I concur. Shudder.

I don't think so. He's celluloid cream of wheat, completely lacking in personality. And, er, really so is Portman as far as I can tell. Yawn...

(and there are a few teenaged celebrity pipsqueaks who do strike me as hot http://ellis.dyndns.biz/users/chinwag/emoticons/neutral/shy.gifso it isn't just my advanced age)

Hmmm.... despite her real-life politics, Natalie Portman's "doability" stock is quite high (especially as Amidala)

Escher, I guess I won't be able to send you info on Storm Trooper armor. Both DH and another prop guy who was visiting last night said that there really isn't one reliable place to go. The people who buy it just do an online search.

The 501st (http://www.501st.com/default.html) is the club that most of the Storm Trooper builders belong to. So your best bet would be to start a search there.

Sorry I wasn't able to be more helpful.

Good analogy. Part of the problem with Portman's Amidala was the thousands of costume changes IMHO. She came across as an intergalactic fashion victim, too concerned about clothes for me to imagine her getting down and dirty and shooting her way out of a space port or something. I preferred the maturity of the Leia/Han characters in the originals to the two puppy lovers in these movies who committed the ultimate sin of being, simply, boring.

They don't hold much of an attraction for me, but I surely don't mind watching Ewan McGregor. Of course I really love to watch him in Moulin Rouge, Big Fish, and Down with Love. I absolutely adore his big, cheesy grin. :o
