BENTONVILLE, ARK (AP) - Some Wal-Mart customers soon will be able to sample a new discount item - Wal-Mart's own brand of wine. The world's largest retail chain is teaming up with Ernest & Julio Gallo winery of Modesto, CA, to produce the spirits at an affordable price; in the $6 - $8 range. While wine connoisseurs may not be inclined to throw a bottle of Wal-Mart brand wine in their shopping carts, there is a market for cheap wine, said Kathy Micken, professor of marketing at Roger Williams University in Bristol, RI. "There is wine in a box that people are willing to buy," she said. "The right name is important."

The top 15 suggested names for Wal-Mart wine:

15) Box o'Grapes
14) Chateau Traileur Doublewide
13) White Trashfindel
12) Big Red Gulp
11) Grape Expectations
10) Domaine Wal-Mart "Merde du Pays"
9) NASCAbernet

7) Peanut Noir
6) Blue Light Special Nun
5) Chateau des Moines
4) Martha Stewart's Sour Grapes
3) I Can't Believe It's Not Vinegar!
2) World Championship Wriesling

and the number 1 name for Wal-Mart wine:

Hey!

What's wrong with Nasti Spumanti? http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/wink.gif

Didn't Whine Spectator give it an 83?

Oooh, sounds like we need to revive the weekly wine club. Can't wait to try these gems!

Thanks for the laugh, SandyM!

ok, "white trashfindel" is just downright mean. But Chef Boyardeaux and Peanut Noir get my vote! Blegh!

I guess we shouldn't laugh too much. Those fruit-punch wine things are really taking off these days, like "blackberry merlot" and "peach zinfandel." You've seen the ads...

Um, should I admit this? My cousin's wife brought a bottle of some blackberry merlot to our house over Christmas -- I politely turned down a glass in favor of my Shiraz....

My in-laws know that I like wine (but they don't), so whenever we are visiting for dinner, they make a point to have bought a bottle of wine ahead of time. It's typically "white trashzinfandel." Their hearts are in the right place, so I always drink it and smile. It's probably encouraging them, I know, but they're just so sweet. I guess I can now start looking forward to WalMart wine in a box for Christmas dinner! Goes nice with turkey, eh?

Wow, "Wally World Wine" now. I wonder if it will be marketed in a box with a free sipping straw included.....or...with a twist off screw top for convenience. http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif

These were hilarious!! Along those same lines, check out this web site re: beautiful mobile homes of Mississippi. It is too funny. Sorry if I offended anyone from Mississippi. We have our share of these fine homes in Texas as well. http://www.drbukk.com/gmhom/park.html

I just re-read this web site (hadn't looked at it in a while), and maybe I should be apologizing to more than just Mississippians. Beware, it's funny, but very politically incorrect!

Goodness, Wine in Wal-Mart!!?? Here in Pa you can't even buy wine in grocery stores like many other states, too conservative!!

And then, here in Lancaster Co it is a REAL pain to purchase good ole beer without going to a distributor and popping out $$$$ for a whole case. I don't mind having a case of coolers (adult kool-aid I call them) around, but every now and then I want to braise sausage or ham in beer and I won't buy a whole case for two bottles!!!

As for a name, I think "Sam's Brew" would be a good one!! hehehehehehehe

ChefMom, I don't know about PA but here in Connecticut you can go to a liquor store or a convenience store and buy one or two loose cans. Or do what I did, I bought my son in law a case then asked if I could "borrow" a can or two when I needed it.

SandyM,

I am so depressed after seeing your list. You mean Walmart's "The-Worst-Traminer" isn't sold anymore? I'm just going to have to go back to stomping grapes in my bathtub.

Bummer.
