One of my favorite articles in Bon Appetit is What's in your kitchen? where they ask the chef seven questions. I think the answers are always interesting and they say it tells you the most about a person, so who wants to play? I'll start.
NEWEST THING
My wall-mounted pot rack and cooking pots. Actually my meat grinder is newer, but not nearly so interesting.
OLDELST THING
My popover pan, which belonged to MIL and her mother before her. I don't know the exact age, but it's OLD!
EMBARRASSED TO ADMIT HAVING
Canned goods that are VERY old and, I'm sure, useless. I need to get rid of them, but I keep putting it off. They'll probably explode some day and I'll be sorry.
LEAST LIKE YOU
My blue kitchen cabinets. Can't wait until I can afford to rip them all out.
MOST LIKE YOU
My Campbell Soup doll that's sitting on a shelf in my kitchen.
LEFTOVERS IN THE FRIDGE
Beef brisket and homemade red cabbage from last night's dinner and lots of shredded cheese.
KITCHEN'S ON FIRE--WHAT DO YOU SAVE?
My hand written cookbook that contains lots of my mother's recipes and family favorites. It's the one DH grabs when he wants to make something and I'm not around.

NEWEST THING
An ironware cow-shaped milk pitcher, a gift from some houseguests.
OLDEST THING
A 200 year old Irish dresser
EMBARRASSED TO ADMIT HAVING
Nothing anymore after having done a pantry sweeping 2 months ago!
LEAST LIKE YOU
Well, since I designed it I can't think of anything that doesn't fit me except for the bad design on the pantry...way too small!
MOST LIKE YOU
My cast iron apron sink that is painted with French country blue and roosters
LEFTOVERS IN THE FRIDGE
Aside from last night's fajitas and charro beans there are a few science experiments.
KITCHEN'S ON FIRE--WHAT DO YOU SAVE?
My KA mixer it's on the counter and most easily accessible.

Newest Thing: set of cute dishes from Target. The plates have a yellow rim, white inside.
Oldest Thing: The hood over the stove
Embarrassed to admit having: These frozen cheeseburger sticks that the kids love ( I don't think they're that bad either  )
Least Like you: The ugly recipe box that looks like a quilt
Most like you: The Polish Pottery
Leftovers in the fridge: Oh gosh, I'm sure there's some mold growing on the bottom shelf. Otherwise...salad from last night.
Kitchen's on fire- what do you save: It's a toss up. My cookbooks, KA, or my Polish Pottery. They are all next to a window though, so I could use the KA to smash through the window and then toss as much of the rest out as I could.

Currently, none, but there will be leftover lemon Parmigiana chicken and barley with sage and lemon from tonight's supper.

NEWEST THING
Two gorgeous aprons from ChefWear (http://www.chefwear.com/).
OLDEST THING
Me. :p No, no, kidding aside, a surprising number of pieces of china that I got for my first apartment in (gulp) 1964.
EMBARRASSED TO ADMIT HAVING
Dust bunnies along the baseboards.
LEAST LIKE YOU
Door hanging ajar on one of the cabinets, but I haven't had the time or money to get it fixed or replaced. (I hate mess and open doors.)
MOST LIKE YOU
Door hanging ajar on one of the cabinets, but I haven't had the time or money to get it fixed or replaced. (I procrastinate a lot.)
Okay, so I cheated. :D How about the stockpiled herbs, spices, beans, grains, and pasta?
LEFTOVERS IN THE FRIDGE
Beans, of course.
KITCHEN'S ON FIRE--WHAT DO YOU SAVE?
My cat. And maybe a couple of Paderno pans. The dust bunnies can fend for themselves.
Cheers,

NEWEST THING
Two bread pans I picked up at Marshall's last Thursday.
OLDEST THING
Cast iron cornstick pan scavenged from the family farm on the Eastern shore of MD, circa 1900?
EMBARRASSED TO ADMIT HAVING
Old red plastic scrubby with food of unknown origin festering deep within. I only use it for truly foul dishes that will subsequently be re-washed for hygiene.
LEAST LIKE YOU
Stack of plastic Jerry's cups in the cabinet. DH makes me keep them.
MOST LIKE YOU
Red glass tile backspash
LEFTOVERS IN THE FRIDGE
Chicken and andouille gumbo, pad thai, Smokey turkey joes (not really leftover yet, since they are for tonight, but they've been fully prepared). Lots of "half-veg"...half a peeled and seeded cuke, half a head of napa cabbage, half an onion, half a red pepper, half a lime.
KITCHEN'S ON FIRE--WHAT DO YOU SAVE?
Eh..it's all replaceable. I'd grab my handbag (insurance I can deal with; the DMV, not so much) and head for other rooms with more sentimental items.

NEWEST THING
Four perfect white walls and ceiling. They will be "Distant Grey" by the end of today, which one friend says describes me perfectly.

EMBARRASSED TO ADMIT HAVING
We need to go to the bedroom for that.
LEAST LIKE YOU
The crockpot, when it gets back.
MOST LIKE YOU
A rarely used oval roaster with a black cast iron outside and a grey speckled enamel interior. I have no idea who made this, it's rarely used as it was apparently intended for small roasts which I rarely do, but it's classically beautiful and simple.
LEFTOVERS IN THE FRIDGE
Chicken-couscous salad

My messy bookcase with cookbooks and other sundry junk all over it.
Most like you
Lots of veggies in the fridge...just went shopping.
Leftovers in fridge
Chicken Asparagus salad from Thursday...yuk. Some thawed out meat, onion, pepper and mushroom mixture. It was unidentifiable in the freezer so I thawed it out. Might end up mixing with pasta sauce tomorrow night.
Kitchen's on fire, what do you save?

First of all, I would like to go "shopping" in some of your kitchens. Some of the things, especially things you all said were "most like you" sound so nice!
OK, here's my list:
Newest thing: small sieve (it's kind of tedious to pick out bits of minced ginger from a syrupy liquid using a fork;) !).
Oldest thing: I admit my cornstarch was bought when we first moved in. That would be 7 years ago. Well, at least it has been stored in a Rubbermaid.
Embarassed to admit having: A 3 pound box of Russell Stover chocolates that are factory "seconds", bought at one of their factory outlets for $8.95, that I plan to eat mostly by myself.
Ok, I'm not embarassed about this. I'm happy. :D
Least Like You: A can of Underwood Deviled Ham that I bought to have on hand in case a storm took out our power.
Most Like You: Wallpaper- Laura Ashley Americana pattern which has small berries, true red and true blue colors. Never had wallpaper in my kitchen before, and our kitchen is so tiny that having this peek out from behind the appliances feels comforting. Also, I'd have to say, the sandstone trivet with the big kitty painted on it, given to me by my oldest friend.
Leftovers in fridge: 1. Leftovers from weekend takeout, some barbecue from Bubba's, who cooks with so much love and care (he's one in a million). 2. Cranberry-Orange-Apple Crisp (CL) made Saturday.
Kitchen's on fire, what do you save? I used to have this well-rehearsed: recipe box (the one with the tried-and-trues) under one arm, kittycat under the other. Alas, kittycat got old and died, so until a new kitty arrives, I guess it's just the recipe box!

NEWEST THING
Wow, I really have to think about this! I haven't needed anything new for the kitchen in a while... I think an 11x7 Pyrex. How embarrassing!
OLDEST THING
Cast iron 10" skillet from DH's grandmother. It's got to be at least 80 years old.
EMBARRASSED TO ADMIT HAVING
A bottle of peach-flavored sparkling wine. It was a gift from a friend... whom I love, but who puts ice cubes in her Chardonnay. :o
LEAST LIKE YOU
A cookbook/gag gift entitledPad Parties (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0811837858/qid=1114450944/sr=1-1/ref=sr_1_1/102-9203849-5827317?v=glance&s=books). It's all about kitschy, tacky, throwback parties and while entertaining, this book is not me at all.
MOST LIKE YOU
Hand-painted terra cotta plate from Hungary that SIL brought back to me from her trip last summer.
LEFTOVERS IN THE FRIDGE
Cut up fruit from a baby shower I co-hosted on Saturday. Fajita meat from a party I attended on Saturday night, from a local Mexican place (the hostess couldn't keep the leftovers so she sent them home with me).
KITCHEN'S ON FIRE--WHAT DO YOU SAVE?
I would say my KA, but if it went up in flames then I could get one of the new ones from Williams-Sonoma! There's really nothing in there that I just couldn't replace.
CompassRose
04-25-2005, 12:07 PM
NEWEST THING
I think the little nonstick toaster oven tray that I bought for Small Batch roll cakes.
OLDEST THING
A bunch of stuff from A.'s grandmother... a little side cabinet (currently holding most of my baking stuff) built by his granddad; one of those glass rolling pins you fill with water for chilling pastry; a nice green glass lemon juicer; a blue pressed glass water pitcher and cups set; an Art Deco blue glass cream & sugar set; and a few other odds and sods.
EMBARRASSED TO ADMIT HAVING
Nothing. I think. Lots of weird stuff -- but I'm a bodybuilder, my kitchen is supposed to have weird stuff in it.
LEAST LIKE YOU
The entire kitchen fundament -- cabinets, layout, everything. Stupid and awkward. Cannot afford to completely rework kitchen as I would like.
MOST LIKE YOU
Two giant shelves of books, magazines and other culinary reading material. Hah. I don't think there's a room in my house that doesn't have at least a few books in it, other than the front entryway.
LEFTOVERS IN THE FRIDGE
Normally there's a dish full of skinless, boneless chicken breasts, but am currently out (and my favourite butcher is closed Mondays). Right now... most of a braised bison steak, which will be subbing where my plan says "chicken breast" and will probably suffice for three or four such meals.
KITCHEN'S ON FIRE--WHAT DO YOU SAVE?
Any cats in there? Dog? Probably nothing then. Love to save all the books, but no. Better rush upstairs and save the laptop instead.

NEWEST THING
A brand new 8" replacement chef's knife from Calphalon (after mine broke in half!!)
OLDEST THING
A square, antique plate with gold gilding that came from my great grandmother. When I was living at home, my mom always fed me breakfast on on special/big days and she gave it to me when I moved away from home.
b]EMBARRASSED TO ADMIT HAVING [/b]
BOXES of instant pudding in the pantry... I am so not a jello person.
LEAST LIKE YOU
My microwave. I only keep for the purpose of melting pounds and pounds of chocolate at Christmas.
MOST LIKE YOU
My set of hand-thrown ceramic prep bowls.
LEFTOVERS IN THE FRIDGE
Pork shoulder with tomatillo sauce (made ahead for dinner on Wed), vegetarian chili (from yesterday), and a tupperware container full of sauerkraut.
KITCHEN'S ON FIRE--WHAT DO YOU SAVE?
That antique plate might have to be saved, but other than that I have to side with Rebecca... not much that can't be replaced.

KITCHEN'S ON FIRE, WHAT DO YOU SAVE?
The cat (her favorite spot is on top of the cabinets), but if she or the dogs weren't in there, then nothing. The cookbooks might tempt me but if I had time to save books I'd start with the fiction.

Cheap decorating bag and tips bought today for those rare moments when I get the urge to decorate a cake
Oldest thing

Embarrassed to Admit
Knorr Hollandaise sauce package I bought today to solve my eggs Benedict cravings
Least Like You
The cabinets and appliances -- the wood is too dark and the appliances are all beige. I can't wait to be able to afford to redo the kitchen and get sleek, blonde wood and brushed silver appliances
Most Like You
The magnets all over the fridge. I collect them from different cities I go to, not to mention random magnets that appeal to me for one reason or another. Also the piles of cooking magazines and books on various counters. I keep meaning to mark the newest CL annual with the recipes I marked in the magazines so I can toss the magazines, but I keep procrastinating. That's me to a T!
Leftovers in the Fridge

Kitchen's on fire, what do you save

Newest Thing
A new cookie sheet and sheet pan -- one to replace one that my malfunctioning oven damageed on Easter.
Oldest thing
Not sure, but probably eitehr the wire canning jar lifter that was DH's mother's or probably grandmother's or one of the old glass pieces from one of our grandmothers.
Embarrassed to Admit
Gosh, would it be the rolling tile countertops, the ugly cooktop, or the overall kitchen awaiting a facelift?
Least Like You
The appliances -- especially the cooktop. I would never have picked this cooktop, even new. But the dysfunctional countertops are a close second.
Most Like You
My KA mixer -- solid, dependable, nothing fancy, a work horse that occassionally makes a mess of things, but can also smooth things out.
Leftovers in the Fridge
Barbequed ribs and a slice of pizza.

OLDEST THING
Probably my grandmother's rolling pin and cookie cutters.
EMBARRASSED TO ADMIT HAVING
A flat of Kraft Macaroni & Cheese from Costco- we make it frequently for weekend lunches when there are no leftovers around.
LEAST LIKE YOU
The "country sunflower" decor and yellow paint, which pre-date our ownership of the house. I'm not nearly so cheerful!
MOST LIKE YOU
The bananas browning on the counter, the cupboard full of Penzey's spices.
LEFTOVERS IN THE FRIDGE
Some mashed sweet potatoes, some polenta, and a chickpea salad, all of which are now too old to eat.

I'll give it a shot too!
NEWEST THING: This one is easy as the UPS man just delivered it today;my brand spanking new 12 cup KitchenAid food processor in Cobalt Blue to match "Babe" the blue ox aka my mix master also in Cobalt blue(it was a TSV last week on QVC and I caved:o ).
OLDEST THING: That would have to be my Wagner 12" cast iron skillet circa 1900 my mom picked up at a garage sale and gave to me. I love it!:)
EMBARRASSED TO ADMIT:I keep a stash of Oreo cookies in the pantry for me, and Chef Boy Ardee ravioli in the can for an occasional treat for my boys. :o
LEAST LIKE YOU: Since DH and I designed the kitchen, not much except maybe the little wooden box thing-a-ma-jig that sits on my desk which I can't throw out since DH made it as a kid. Fortunately it is small and inconspicuous.:D
MOST LIKE YOU: All my cookie jars. My collection is around 40 now, and they are displayed over the cabinets in the kitchen since we have 9 foot ceilings. DH put planks of wood over the soffets so they would be visible.
LEFTOVERS IN THE FRIDGE: one meal of lasagna; one bowl of sausage, bean, and pasta soup; a bowl of turkey barley soup; fresh strawberries and pineapple; leftover cider glazed carrots; leftover Passover Pecan bars; salad fixings along with the usual array of condiments, bread, beverages etc...
KITCHEN'S ON FIRE; WHAT DO YOU SAVE?: If it was at hand, my big wooden recipe box; otherwise I can't think of anything that is irreplaceable, so I'd probably just run empty-handed.

What fun to read everyone's responses!
NEWEST THING: A really great restaurant-sized skillet - bigger than the 6-quart we had been using.
OLDEST THING: A couple of cookbooks from the 60's and 70's that I bought at an estate sale from someone who clearly lived to cook - with lots of notes and markings all through them. There was something sad about them being for sale at an estate sale and something comforting about knowing that I'd take them home and keep them safe.
EMBARRASSED TO ADMIT: paper plates, cups, and plastic utensils, for when we just can't stand to wash another dish.
LEAST LIKE YOU: The horrendously ugly linoleum - in burnt orange, brown, and cream - of flowers. Yep, brown and orange flowers. We've yet to replace it with the really pretty sage green tile that's waiting to go down.
MOST LIKE YOU: My bookcase of cookbooks. Sometimes I sit at the dining room table and just peruse through them. When we first moved into the house, the kitchen didn't feel like "mine" until the cookbooks were in their place.
LEFTOVERS IN THE FRIDGE: Lots and lots of Passover leftovers. One day I'll learn to cook for the number of people coming! Or maybe not.
KITCHEN'S ON FIRE; WHAT DO YOU SAVE?: My cat Gilda, who (honest to God) sits on our kitchen table while we're cooking and supervises. We can't figure out what the heck she's yapping about - it's the only room and time she does this in!
And Bob - I'm so glad your sense of humor remains intact!

NEWEST THING
Giada's Everyday Italian (which I'm really enjoying) and/or the Calphalon double griddle - about the same vintage.
OLDELST THING
I'd have to say the whole kitchen which is circa 1920.
EMBARRASSED TO ADMIT HAVING
That jar of some kind of glow in the dark orange Mexican nacho sauce that I doubt will ever get used or the Tastefully Simple crap I somehow felt compelled to buy.
LEAST LIKE YOU
The whole, circa 1920 kitchen which is not only UG-ly but has hardly any counter or cabinet space making it less than a joy to cook in.
MOST LIKE YOU
The ceramics collection from various destinations in the world.
LEFTOVERS IN THE FRIDGE
Roasted red peppers, mandarin beef stir fry, Giada's Bolognese sauce (which is so good I've been eating cold with a spoon).
KITCHEN'S ON FIRE--WHAT DO YOU SAVE?

LEAST LIKE YOU
Nothing- I just redid the kitchen last year and it is ME.
MOST LIKE YOU
The whole kitchen! The fact that other than when I'm cooking and baking and ingredients are flying, the counters are almost entirely bare and the look is very sleek.
LEFTOVERS IN THE FRIDGE
EW macaroni & cheese with spinach; EW chicken with roasted lemon sauce
KITCHEN'S ON FIRE--WHAT DO YOU SAVE?

OLDEST THING Probably the circa-90-year-old flatware.
EMBARRASSED TO ADMIT HAVING Dinty Moore Beef Stew for power outages (at DH's request!)
LEAST LIKE YOU I don't know. I've always made kitchens from boat galleys on to be mine.
MOST LIKE YOU Probably the organization. I set up my present, spacious kitchen as a copy of the cozier kitchens in which I had cooked in the past.
LEFTOVERS IN THE FRIDGE Leftovers generally get frozen. In the refrig -- some cooked turkey and cooked steak.
KITCHEN'S ON FIRE--WHAT DO YOU SAVE? No contest. My recipe collection and my computer.

Our table sits next to a radiator and our cat Monkey (ask DH) has her own board (with holes drilled in to let the heat up to her tushie in the winter)where she sits while we eat! :p

Granite countertops and new appliances. :D
OLDEST THING
The Strawberry Shortcake cookie cutters my kids made salt dough Christmas ornaments out of--when she was popular the first time!

A can of Spaghettio's for the times DGD visits and doesn't like what we're having. (What HAS her mother taught her?)
LEAST LIKE YOU
Scratched up Pyrex baking pans.

Beautiful hand-thrown ceramic garlic keeper.

KITCHEN'S ON FIRE, WHAT DO YOU SAVE?
The Jack-in-the-Box head antenna-topper which mysteriously appeared on our rental car antenna in the middle of the first vacation DH and I took after a disastrous time of life that had sucked out our souls. It is still a symbol of restoration for us. Crazy, huh?[/B]

This has been the most fun I've had frittering away an evening in a long time!
NEWEST THING
An immersion blender
OLDEST THING
A gold rimmed teacup that was my late grandmother's
EMBARASSED TO ADMIT HAVING
Two year old cans of oysters that someone had given me to make oyster dressing. The dressing was so terrible that I never used the extra cans to make it again...but I haven't thrown them away.
LEAST LIKE YOU
Some plastic holiday shaped cookie cutters that I have never used and will likely NEVER use (why don't I throw them away?)

My whole kitchen that (like bluestocking) was just redone last year. DH designed it 'specially for me and I love everything in it!
LEFTOVERS IN THE FRIDGE
Chicken with garlic/lemon/white wine sauce, penne with sausage and cheese (Jan. issue), three rotten oranges, 4 egg yolks that I hope to make chocolate/banana/toffee pudding with.....

Hmmm....
Newest Thing
My new set of hard anodized cookware
Oldest Thing
My 120 year old oak draw table used as my dining table
Embarrassed to admit having
Kraft 'Tangy Italian Style Spaghetti Dinner' box with spaghetti, canned sauce, and canned Parmesan cheese dust, labeled 1979. It was in the cabinet when I met my husband in 1997 and was there until our remodel three years ago. Now it's in the bookcase in the den because it's an 'antique' and it's 'cool'. He wants to open the sauce can on our 25th anniversary.
Least Like You
The 26 cans of tomatoes in the cabinet my husband has purchased for when he feels like he 'must' make chili. He always forgets he's already bought tomatoes...and that he has homemade chili in the freezer. ;)
Most Like You
The entire Tuscan Vineyard look and feel of my kitchen and dining room, complete with my 80 foot handpainted grapevine that twirls through both rooms over the walls and ceiling.
Leftovers in the fridge
Blue Cheese Meatloaf, Quinoa, Barley and Black Bean Pilaf, Kung Pao Chicken, and the bagged salad that has turned to liquid that I can't bring myself to lift out into a bowl and toss into the compost because it'll be ucky. :o
Kitchen's on Fire...What do you save?
My antique couldn't be left behind. From my 80 year old coffee grinder to my 90 year old butter churn and spongeware bowls, it'd be a tough call. I'd cart off as many of these precious pieces as I could get my hands on. :)

Hey, no harm done in laughing at my last "this is a joke" remark, because it was intended that way, but reading through what you'd save in a fire was interesting. Saving the pets is obvious and cheating, I think, but having lived through this, what I really regret not having grabbed was my cookbook holder! There were one or two books, annuals, in it, no big thing to replace, but behind them must have been twenty or thirty printouts of the recipes I use most or new things I've just tried. I don't have a clue what was there and of course I won't until I go to make whatever it is. That is going to be terribly frustrating and make me more than a little nutty!
I'm also surprised at the number of people who'd rescue their very replaceable LeCrueset, which I suspect would survive anyway!

I love it! You wonder who and how. ;)
DH and I adopted the happy face as a symbol of survival and better times ahead when we went through our move from CA to TX. Buying a few silly smilies made it easier to laugh sometimes. Now I'll think of this when ever I see a Jack-in-the-box topper too! :)

NEWEST THING
My entire kitchen. I just closed on my new house on 3/23/05, which I had custom built. I love my new cooktop, ovens, and dishwasher (and my granite countertops!!).
OLDDST THING
My Fiestaware collection I inherited from my grandparents, displayed proudly in my glass covered cabinet.

See above. I'm very health conscious and work out 5 - 6 days a week, yet occasionally crave the "waffle fry meal".

KITCHEN'S ON FIRE, WHAT DO YOU SAVE?
Fiestaware first (completely irreplacable), Cookbooks second (with my notes). Everything else is replaceable (I'd go after saving other stuff in the house).
