I am relatively new at the message board thing and wondering if I set myself up incorrectly. What does the dot on the envelope mean? I see other users have little "sun rays" above their envelopes, others have "opened" envlopes. I see the symbol key at the bottom, but don't see the "dot" on the envelope picture. Did I lock myself out from something? I even tried to attach one of the available avatar pics under my user name and couldn't get it to work. What am I doing or not doing wrong?

I believe that a dot on the envelope just means that you have posted on that thread.

As for the avatars- someone else will be able to chime in and help with that- I did mine so long ago that I don't remember how!

Welcome to the boards!

I think the dot means you've replied to that thread. All the envelopes with dots on my screens are threads that I have conversed on.

Yes, the ones with the dots are ones you've added a post to.

As for your avatar, I believe you have to have 10 posts (or something) before you can get an avatar.

Welcome to the boards!

Hi twinkle-toes and welcome to the boards! :)

The little dot on the envelope means that you have posted something to that thread.
And to use an avatar, it has to come from a website, not from your files.

An opened envelope indicates a thread you have not opened (read) and the rays indicate a post with many views or replies (i.e., a "popular" thread).
Hope that helps! :)

Oh, and as for the avatar, that isn't available until you have 10 posts. You don't have to be profound on this board, just post so you can get your avatar. :D

Oops, I lied. I just checked the key and an open envelope means there are new posts since you last opened that thread. I always thought an open yellow envelope was one I'd never viewed.
I'd better shut up before I cause total confusion ;) .

Am I the only one who has never paid attention to the envelope thing?

Welcome to the boards Twinkle Toes! :D

I didn't notice for a long time, Linda--then realized it has its own little language.:)

Twinkle Toes, you may get some help by going to FAQ at the top right of the page--in a row with "user cp', etc. The best way is to just observe and you'll figure it all out--the good thing (for me, anyway) is that it's easy and you can't mess it up very much--and nobody cares if you do.

Welcome to the board--you'll like it here.

I saw them, but it never even occurred to me what they might mean. Thanks for the heads up twinkle-toes-kh and for the rest of you who responded. You learn something new every day when you frequent these boards!
