I know that this is the place to come when I really need some good thoughts. I'm thanking each and every one of you in advance.

I got an email this morning from my step-mother in AZ. She said that my darling 85 year old grandmother is in the hospital "in serious condition." I still haven't been able to directly connect with anyone, but my dad later left me a message at work saying that she has an intestinal blockage and was rushed to the hospital after calling 911. They have to do something about the blockage today or it could kill her. Unfortunately, the surgical procedure is also risky and she has the age factor working against her.

She's basically a healthy woman who has lead a great life. I'm praying for the best for her and waiting to hear some more information from my dad or stepmother. I was just thinking yesterday and I hope we are able to visit with her again soon. She was always so spunky, but has mellowed some. She lives on her own in a seniors facility and is definitely with it.

Thanks again! I know how powerful the BB good thoughts and prayers have been in the past and how much everyone here always pulls together, even though we sometimes have our differences. :)

Susan, just about a year ago, my mother appeared to have an intestinal blockage. I was beginning to worry she was going to explode before they would get things corrected. I was afraid to go on vacation for fear something would happen. We were fortunate -- the second medication got things back to normal. I realize your grandmother is older and it sounds like things have progressed further (my mom was never in real pain or distress of any kind), but I hope things will turn out as well for her.

Thank you, everyone. It is such a comfort for me to come here. I feel bad living so far from my dad and grandma. I always fear something bad happening.

I talked to my dad very briefly last night. He had just gotten to the hospital (5:00pm AZ time) and couldn't talk long. They decided to do the surgery last night. My grandma was laughing and joking in the background and sounded like her usual self. She still exercises everyday- 15-20 miles on her exercise bike!

My little sister called and gave me the real story. My dad leaves details out becuase he thinks we'll worry less. He also likes to know every detail before he tells us anything. Drives me crazy at times. So my sister told me that my grandmother had been very sick for 2 days, before she decided to call the ambulance. I know if she called herself, she was in a bad way. Her intestine actually made a hole in her stomach because the blockage caused it to push through. They had no choice but to perform surgery. They told my dad it was risky due to her age. Also, she hasn't been able to eat in a few days. She sounded spunky as ever and the daily exercise is in her favor, too.

I haven't heard anything yet today and nobody called back last night. She was scheduled to go into surgery 11:00pm Eastern time and my dad said he wasn't going to call us in the middle of the night, so I'm axiously awaiting any news from them today. I'm hoping that everything went well. Keep those prayers coming!!

My dad called me a few minutes ago. He said the doctor called my grandmother "an enigma." He said "why? because she made it through?" The doctor replied, "Yes. That surgery would have killed anyone else." I imagine he meant any other 86 year old grandmother. She's a tough cookie! The report was the best that they could have hoped for. They fixed up her stomach where the bowel had poked through. Apparently there were several places. My dad saw her last night and she was out of it and unable to talk with the tube down her throat. He said she knew they were there, though. The tube was removed shortly after and she was recovering very nicely. He was on his way to see her this morning.

Thanks for all the prayers - looks like they've been answered. I can't express how much it means to me. :)

I am so glad that the surgery went smoothly for her. She does sound like an amazing women. To be in that much pain and still be able to laugh and joke before the surgery is incredible. I wish her a speedy recovery - tell her to come post on the exercise thread - we'd love to read about her daily rides!

Susan,
I'm so glad to hear that your grandmother made it through the surgery and is recovering well.

The surgeon's comment reminded me of a story my mother told me. She worked for a neurosurgeon and the Dr. operated on an lady in her 80's. He was happy she made it through the surgery as that wasn't expectedd, but he was shocked when she sat up on the table/gurney as they were wheeling her to recovery and said "fooled you, didn't I!" :D :D :D A week or so later she called the office to ask if she was allowed to have a glass of wine. The Dr. said she can have whatever she wants. :D

Sounds like your grandmother & this lady are a lot alike.

Well, despite the great report after surgery, my grandmother seems to have develope pneumonia. My dad is very upset about it so my little sister had to call to tell me. She said that they are treating her with antibiotics and she's also on a pain killer so she's pretty tired. She was really out of for a bit because of the drugs, but my sister says she's much better since they switched her to demarol. My dad seems to think she won't make it, but my step-mother is hopeful. Grandma is a strong lady. So all we can do now is wait and pray that she recovers from this.

What's bothering me is that it's been 2 years since I've seen her and we didn't get to spend much time together then. At the very least, she did get to meet my kids, I just wish they could remember her. I am happy that my little sister and brother live close enough that they spent a lot of time with her and have been very close with her. Distance is such a hard thing.

Thanks for the good thoughts and prayers that all of you have sent and are sending.

And Leigh, I love that story!

Susan,
Sorry to hear your grandmother has developed pneumonia. Though it's not unusual for the elderly to develop it when restricted to a bed. Will continue to pray for her recovery.

jmarie

Yes, Susan. Ditto what sneezles said. I am continuing my prayers for her. I know you are worried. My mom developed pneumonia when she was 80 and had knee surgery. She recovered, and she was very weak, because of unforseen complications due to surgery. So don't lose hope.

Susan, I am sorry to hear about her set-back. She sounds like a wonderfully tough lady so I am hoping she will show her fighting spirit and recover from this. I am sorry that you are so far away from your family. It is such a tough situation when all you want to do is be close when somthing like this happens. I will continue to keep you all in my thoughts.

Please add me to the list of people praying for her. We've had some setbacks lately with my 92-year old Grandma. The lifespan today is so much greater...you have hope. I wonder though if you'd feel better if you could make a trip to see her? Is that possible? I'm pretty good with flight deals, if there's anything I can do to help.

Ladies, you have come through for me once again. On Sunday evening, the report was drastically better than Saturday. She has been out of bed, though not walking around due to the stomach surgery. She is doing breathing exercises and there is a definite improvement. They still think she's crazy because she keeps saying she wants to go home and ride her bike. She said she needs some exercise. My little sister said she looks a lot better and is getting back to her spunky self. My dad even went on an overnight business trip.

Thank you thank you thank you! You guys are THE BEST!!!

luckylori- I meant to add my thanks for your offer. We'll have to see how things progress. She's still doing well, but she's in ICU so my little sister said they really can't stay long when they see her. My other sister in NC had wanted to take a trip out there later this year. My problem is the expense since we need 4 seats now- so I will keep your offer in mind.

Susan I am so glad to hear that she is improving. Sounds like she is ready to get on with her life and just wants to go home - good luck to the hospital in getting her to slow down a little and recover first :D She sounds like a lovely lady. I am also glad that your dad is feeling more comfortable too - it must have been very difficult for him.
