Can't believe how early I received this...seems like I am always on the late end. The cover features Mango Rice Salad with Grilled Shrimp, which looks really good. Here are some cover blurbs:

Summer cookbook: 109 fresh recipes for the sunny season

Quick pasta salads

Easy brunch menu

Vacations that cook

Boost your workout

I haven't had a chance to look through the whole issue but it seems like a good one!!! :D

DARN!!! Here I thought I was the first for a change. But hey, not only did I get my June CL today, I also got the new Eating Well. Sad thing is I have company coming tomorrow, so have been too busy baking/cooking to even glance at them yet. Ahhh....but at least it is something to look forward to over the next week!

Well, today I got my new Bon Appetit, Sunset and Veg Times. That'll hold me for a few days, so I'm hoping CL and EW show up by at least Wednesday. Seems like I'm always the last one in PA to get mine, though!

I got my June CL and May Southern living the same day. By the time I get through taking all those little cards out I don't want to read either one.
The cost of magazines keeps going up because of paper costs etc, so they say, but why do all the magazines I subscribe to have 5 or 6 cards to mail in subscribing to the magazine. They offer special rates and even free gifts. I am a subscriber and yet they have all these cards, then at least 6 months before my subscription expires they start sending me renewal notices. No wonder they cost so much.

I totally agree. I just got a renewal notice for one of my DH magazines - it expires Sept 06! They were asking us to renew before a price increase and this was the 4th notice I had received. If they would just stop sending me renewal notices the price wouldn't have to increase at all.

I also dislike the renewal notices and phone calls I have received from Highlights, a children's magazines. As if the renewal notices weren't enough, they started calling me. The guy actually had the nerve to question my dedication as a parent because I was depriving my child by not immediately renewing the magazine, and she was also missing out on a free gift. He was so downright unpleasant I asked for his supervisor. When he got on the line I explained what had happened and the supervisor told me that it was standard preceedure for them to try 4 different approaches whilst they had me on the phone. I politely told him what I thought of his proceedures, told him to remove my name immediately from the call list, and advised that they had seen the last of me as a customer.

I have it at home - just got it yesterday - and can post the index if no one else gets to it.

I'm usually CL's biggest fan, but I actually found this issue sort of weird when I skimmed it last night - lots of odd sounding combinations.

Mine arrived yesterday, which is really freaking early. I'm typically one of the last to receive their issue, and I too never received May.

Anyhow, I agree with NewMrsG and Hungry that the recipes seemed a little lackluster. I'm not too keen on the whole middle part of the magazine being a series of A-Z recipes. It took up a lot of space to fit in all these recipes, and I kept finding myself thinking, "Oh, I'm only at P?" And again, no inspired vegetarian section.

Okay, whine over.:o I'm sure I'll find some good recipes in there, I always do.:)

I don't agree. I like the "Summer Cookbook" idea, where just about every summer food favorite is given a recipe, so that there's something for everybody, so much so that I wish they'd made it a really special issue by letting it stand alone without ads breaking it up just this once. If the "Inspired Vegetarian" isn't there, there are plenty of things that are already vegetarian or easily adapted, like the Chickpea Salad I did last night.

All in all, I found it a good issue to sit down with and plan while looking forward to all the wonderful produce to appear, so much so that I wish they'd provided a "shopping list" feature like some of the other food mags do.

I looked through it more closely last night and definitely found a few things that looked good - the lemon drop liqueur, the Indian recipes towards the end, the creme brulee ... but all in all it was just alot of odd stuff - such as the stuffed squash blossoms on bread. I will also say, though, that there were just a lot of recipes for things I don't like or are allergic to - like pork, oranges, and plums. (More to add to the thread on what I won't eat!) And tons of stuff with olives, which my husband won't eat.

Just not a good issue for me - probably my least favorite so far. But I'm sure I'll make some things from it and it will be great for others!

It was the squash blossoms on bread that got me too, as well as the strawberry sorbet with black pepper (which I will probably try). I do appreciate the different uses of summer produce though and will probably try all of the drink recipes.

I liked some of the recipes, peaked my interest a few times. The layout of this issue was not very good for me. I felt like a lot was jammed in each page. I think further readings will help me out a lot.

It starts on page 190, and is all dips. So while present, it may not be all that "inspiring" or memorable :). Though there were a few recipes I will try. I could live on dips.

Well, I am not loving the June issue. Maybe it is me, but April and May didn't do anything for me either!! I don't know what my problem is.

I ordered several back issues off of Ebay recently, and I have really enjoyed cooking from these (they are mosty '97 and '98). Maybe my tastebuds are behind the times, and I will enjoy the current issues in 7-8 years!!!

I received my June issue today and quickly flipped through it. I thought the summer cookbook part looked fairly interesting. I must have missed the squash blossoms on bread in my haste to see what was inside the issue. (Hmmm, wonder if my picky 5-year-old would go for that?)

Is it just me, or was the January 05 issue the best so far this year?

Ha! I didn't mean to have hurt their feelings! I guess when I think of bruschetta, I think of things that are sort of schmeared onto bread. This was just a stuffed thing sitting on top of a piece of bread, which seemed somehow odd to me. I've also never eaten or cooked a squash blossom myself, so maybe that just added to the weirdness for me.

Just my opinion!

The stuffed squash blossom part looked good to me- I love sqash blossoms. But they looked really weird perched on top a dry piece of toasted bread, almost like they took it a step too far. I wondered why they felt the need to add the bread part.

I hope funny ;) doesn't mind if I answer this for her.
Chatelaine is a women's magazine here in Canada. It is very similiar to many American magazines in that it covers fashion, gardening, cooking (great recipes) and women's issues. What makes it different though is that there are no articles fawning over celebrites with something to promote. :)

You can check out their website at

I picked up a copy of this magazine whilst I was in Vancouver. I really enjoyed it. You can sign up for a free trial issue here (https://w1.buysub.com/pubs/MH/CHE/CHE_UISubscriptionsNEW.jsp?cds_page_id=771&id=1116538358011&lsid=51391631264029032&vid=2&cds_response_key=V4YH001WN&cds_mag_code=CHE) . It seems though that you have to enter your credit card details to get the free offer. Well it is not quite like WD or FC.
It changed a few years ago to try and appeal to a younger, more hip audience. Quite a few controversial topics which I don't see in those other two mags are covered.
The recipe editor is top notch and the recipes, like Canadian Living, are very reliable.
Plus you get to learn more about your northern neighbours!!! :)

I am so disappointed with the June issue. I have looked through it two times now and have determined I will be making no new recipes from it this month. Luckily, I have enough recipes in my "to try" pile to make up for it. I wasn't overly impressed with "Everyday Food" this month, either. Ho hum. :(

I got mine last week and found a ton of recipes I wanted to try, but didn't get a chance to try any until today. We did a huge grocery run and now I'm set to try a number of recipes, including the cover recipe which will be our dinner tonight. We've been grilling out a lot recently, and it was nice to see recipes specifically for grilling.

I also really liked the way they did the alphabetized ingredient feature. That was a fun (and attractive) layout.

I loved the "A through Z" feature because it has such a wide range of dishes (as opposed to, say, the sheet cake feature in one of the previous months). More pictures than usual, which I liked.

The only thing I wasn't happy about is that the Inspired Vegetarian section is all bean dips ... couldn't that have been a feature on appetizers instead, and the Inspired Vegetarian have some "real" food recipes? Oh, and at least 2 recipes called for fresh figs - I didn't think they were in season yet (maybe they are somewhere else?). I'm being overly picky here, but I get annoyed when I see recipes for ingredients that are out of season.

But all in all, I'm thrilled with the issue (and that it's here already! :D) I highlighted over 50 recipes that I want to try, which is the most I've ever gotten from any issue. I'm going to make the Strawberry-Black Pepper Sorbet tonight, and the Cornbread with Curried Apricot Chutney sometime this week.

And I love squash blossoms and planted a bunch of zucchini and yellow squash for the sole purpose of harvesting the blossoms this year! I'm looking forward to trying the Stuffed Squash Blossom Bruschetta!

 I agree that the June issue is a little odd. I didn't find much I wanted to try in the May issue and was looking forward to June. I like to broaden by tastes by trying new foods and recipes but the past couple of month's recipes are too far out there. I have only been a subscriber for 3 years, maybe I'll try the ebay thing and get some older issues.
