View Full Version : reach out to me! I'm SICK!
DH and I have bronchitis. He has actually been diagnosed and is on very powerful antibiotics. As I type, he is in a state of giggly delerium and is actually ranting about some sort of hallucinations. To my delight,I also awoke with it today. The kids are in front of the TV. So much for the grilled red snapper and white russian tiramisu I had planned for DH's b-day celebration dinner tonite...anyway, of course I've already called my mom to whine and to get her chicken soup recipe but who feels like deboning a stewing hen?? Anyone have any food remedies for bronchitis-like illnesses? I have all day to hear them. Luckily, grocery store is within stumbling distance...gratefully, Amy in germ-stricken Raleigh. (btw, loved that asparagus thread!)

Amy, it must be a bug...I have it in Marion Va.Some friends came down with it...one for the thrid time! Then, DH came down with it first. I started last Monday ...by Thursday night, I was so sick, I went ahead and called in sick for work the next day and went and got a Z-Pack (antibiotic)...and feeling maybe a tiny bit better...cough like the dickens when I lie down. Awful cough that is like a little tickle...This started in my chest, went to my head, now back in chest! If misery loves company, then you have a partner....I will be anxiously watching for any suggestions from other readers! Until then, you feel better!

Sorry you all are so sick. Fast way to make "Mom's chicken noodle soup" which I use when I'm out of the real stuff, is to saute a small amount of onion in a very small amount of butter, until it is translucent, add some chopped celery (or celery seed if you have no celery), chopped carrots or anything else you want, add COLD water and then the chopped up chicken breasts, any seasoning you want and some chicken boullion cubes or teaspoons. (Alternatively, you can just add some canned chicken boullion.) I find poultry seasoning, Jane's Crazy Salt, and a little sage are usually enough. Put on the stove at LOW and cook until it boils. Turn it down and either simmer or add the noodle (broken up if they are large). Taste (if you can taste anthing) and adjust the seasoning.
I'm not putting in any quantities because I have no idea of how much I use (something my DH finds frustrating when I turn up with something he really likes and I can't remember how to exactly duplicate it).
It's really quite simple: a small amount of onion, celery, carrots, cut up chicken breast, chicken broth ,Crazy Salt, poultry seasoning, a little sage and cook all the the above in cold water. (I was told that the cold water lets all the juices leach out of the meat into the stock-just the opposite of broiling where you want all the good stuff inside the meat.) When you're ready, add noodles to the broth.
Hope you both (with DHs)feel better soon!
jmarie: I took the z-pack in March for an upper respiratory infection. We get these things from my son in daycare, I think! Hope you feel better soon, too. Hopefully, Carolyn's chicken soup will help.
Carolyn: is the chicken raw when you add it to the water? Sounds so easy, i'm going to the store now. I just got up from a 2-hour nap and ate 2 bowls of Kix cereal. Think I'll be needing protein soon...Thanks!!!Amy

It seems I never have the time for homemade chicken soup, so when I am sick I have Progresso's chicken with wild rice and add as much fresh garlic, cayenne pepper and jalapenos as I can handle. Maybe it's all in my head but I seem to feel better. Here is wishing you all a speedy recovery.
Amy: Feeling any better today? Tabatchnick Soups in the freezer case are good. ( I usually buy Chic & matzo ball).

I don't like chicken noodle soup and I'm usually not hungry and not in the mood to cook when I'm really sick. What I usually do is go by the local Chinese restaurant and get a couple quarts of egg drop soup and that provides my requisite chicken broth. Reheats nicely and is easy to swallow.
Tovie: its so funny you mentioned egg drop because that is what Mom recommended on Fri. nite. I ordered a pint for DH from a great Chinese delivery and he sucked it down. I wonder if thats why he felt better on Sat.... he has felt better with each day.
JLS: Feeling much better, thanks! We're both back at work today. I've never heard of Tabatchnick. I wonder if they have it here (NC), but i've always been curious about matzo balls, having never had them but seen them on Foodtv. Never seen them on restaurant menus here, come to think of it.
Carolyn: I made your recipe, added garlic, it was fabo and very easy! Having some leftovers for lunch today. Thanks!

My sympathies to the ill! Actually I'm sick too. Thought it was just a cold, but the cough was getting nasty, so I went to the doctor on Saturday. I decided to be careful because I ignored a cold last fall which turned into a really nasty case of bronchitis! Well, doctor says I'm working on bronchitis, so I'm armed with some prescriptions and slept most of Sunday. Told DH no way was I cooking, so he got Chinese take out. At work today, but taking it slow. Hope we all feel better soon!

Hi Amy,
Sorry you're sick! My BF and I just got back from Raleigh. Hope we didn't catch anything while we were there! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif How about trying pudding or ice cream? I always love sweets when I'm sick and these should be easy on the throat. Feel better soon!

Tabatchnick Soups are great! They're kosher, and are very pure for a bought soup. Hope all of you get better soon! I had a bad URI in January, don't want to repeat that.
