Hi, I am starting a new "diet" with the new food pyramid. I am only allowed 5 oz of meat a day. What does that equate to? Any clue. Seems very small amount. But maybe i am wrong.

I've always read that one serving of meat (4-6 oz) is about the size of a deck of cards.

You might want to think about getting a kitchen scale and weighing out your portion to make sure you're sticking to the requirement. A serving of meat is SUPPOSED to be 3 ounces, which is roughly the size of a deck of cards or a bar of soap. So 5 ounces a day is actually a pretty reasonable amount, assuming you can have other protein sources throughout the day, like tofu, beans, etc.

oops. Had no idea the deck of cards referred to 3 oz. I always thought 4 was diet standard, and 6 was a large serving.

I second that...when you are counting, it is really difficult to guess accurately, unless you have a package in front of you with the weight and it is a cut that is easily divided evenly. Just a cheapo scale is all you need for this purpose. Also, if you need to weigh fruit or vegetables, it comes in handy for that.
