I will be making CI's Macaroons that were posted on my earlier thread for my friend's birthday next week. It calls for unsweetened coconut and the only place I can find that is Whole Foods (their house 365 brand) but it's grated so small that it's like dust! Not those nice long-ish strands that I've come to expect of coconut.

Does anyone have access to unsweetened coconut in the regular shredded texture?

Please pm me - I have to make them this weekend!!

TIA!

Loren

Loren, the only unsweetened coconut I have ever seen is the tiny shredded stuff at Whole Foods.

Do you have a local health food store? Ours carries unsweetened coconut, sometimes shredded and sometimes flaked.

Are there any large Asian markets in your area? I recall getting some large flakes of unsweetened coconut at either a Chinese/Far East market or an Indian market. I can't remember which but I know I bought it one and am pretty sure I've seen it the other.

Good Luck.

I will try the Asian market and see about a health food store (I always thought WF WAS a health food store - are there some places called health food stores?)

Unfortunately I don't have time to order from KA. I have to make them this weekend - well maybe it might get here in time, I'll check.

Thanks - and if anyone knows they have a local source and would be willing to buy and send me some I will be happy to send you money!

My local TJs has it, shelved with the nuts and dried fruit. MIght be worth calling over. Took me forever to find it, but now that I know it is there, I always see it.

Good luck!

Loren, the Oriental Pantry on 2A in Acton has it. They do mail order if you can't get there. Here's a link (http://www.orientalpantry.com/shopping_cart_functions/view_item.phtml?title_image=&item_no=3803515)

We don't have WF up here - the type of health food store I was refering to was the small (non-chain) type operation that seemed to be everywhere back in the sprouts and granola era. Most of the ones I've seen recently are associated with food co-ops. Good luck.

I've found it at Sprouts in the past.

I've seen it at Wegmans (don't know if it's in Mass.) but it is smaller than the sweetened stuff.

I buy the long, shredded unsweetened coconut in the bulk food section at a store called Sun Harvest here in Austin. It's only about $1.99, or maybe a little less, per pound. If you still need it, and I can get it there in time, I'd be glad to send you some!

I toast it and use it in my morning bowl of oatmeal along with some toasted walnuts---YUMMMMM!!

Thank you all so much!! Everyone is always so wonderful to come through in the clutch!

Jen (jphilg) I'll have to re-check TJ's. I went there before I hit Whole Foods since they're right next to each other. I must have missed it.

In the meantime, thank you to those who are sending me some. I'll be sure to get your money in the mail immediately.

Thank you all!!!!!!!!!!!

Gracie, maybe you have all the unsweetened coconut you want on the way, but have you considered using fresh grated coconut (after all it is "unsweetened") maybe in your recipe or in one calling for fresh coconut? I remember seeing a recipe for them in Rose Berenbam's Christmas cookie book. Of course, it's not an option if you can't find fresh coconuts either.:D
