I just have to post about this book I just got from Amazon ... "How to Cook Everything", written by Mark Bittman (of Cook's Illustrated magazine)... great book!!
I was looking for a good general reference cookbook, as there are just things "missing" in "Joy of Cooking" and I wanted something a bit more up-to-date. This cookbook fits the bill perfectly. My husband grabbed it right away last night (he's the type who wants a recipe for everything) and used it to hardboil eggs and make eggsalad for sandwiches. The eggs turned out /perfectly/ and his eggsalad is outstanding.
The book is basic enough for a novice, but has hints and tips that even the most seasoned cook will appreciate -- would make a great shower gift.
