I did a search but was unable to find an answer to my question. I would like to try cooking porridge oats (oat bran, wheat bran and flaxseed) in my new rice cooker. I made steel-cut oats for this morning and we really enjoyed them. Does anyone know what ratio of oats and water and/or milk you use? Is it the same as when you cook it on the stove? I looked in the Ultimate Rice Cooker Cookbook and the hot fruited oatmeal is 2 cups oats to 2 cups milk and 2 cups water. I am guessing that with 1 rice cooker cup of oats you would add 1 cup milk and 1 cup water? TIA

Tell me more. Did you cook your steel cut oatmeal in the rice cooker? Is that the 2 cups milk and 2 cups water you are referring to for steel cut? What fruit did you use?

Soushi I used the recipe from the Ultimate Rice Cooker cookbook. Here it is:

Old-Fashioned Steel-Cut Oatmeal
Recipe By :Beth Hensperger
Serving Size : 3 Preparation Time :0:00
Categories :
Amount Measure Ingredient -- Preparation Method
-------- ------------ --------------------------------
1 1/4 cups steel-cut oats -- (rice cooker cups)
3 cups cold water
pinch sea salt
pure maple syrup -- for serving
cold milk -- for serving
The night before serving, place the oats, water, and salt in a lidded bowl or the rice cooker bowl. Cover and set aside at room temperature until morning.
In the morning, pour the mixture with its liquid into the rice cooker bowl, if necessary; stir gently to combine. Close the cover and set for the porridge cycle. At the end of the cycle (about 1 hour) the cereal will be thick and will hold on Keep Warm for 1 to 2 hours.
Spoon into bowls and serve hot, with a drizzle of maple syrup and the milk.

Thank you a big bunch! I don't like the "old" way of cooking steel cut oatmeal. Don't like the stirring. I can flip the bottom when I leave for my walk and have hot oatmeat when I return! Yepppy!

Do you like the cookbook? I have been thinking of getting this cookbook when I finally get around to buying a rice cooker, have to decide which cooker to get first, and am seriously tempted to get this book even without a rice cooker!!

I have only made two things from the book so far...the steel-cut oats, which was really good and basmati rice with corn and peas, which was just ok IMHO. I know others on this board have the book so maybe they can answer you better than I can.
