Wonderful news! :)
He was found 5 miles from where he was last seen! It has prompted me to have a talk with my boys - if they would ever lose sight of us somewhere and get lost - STAY WHERE YOU ARE! We will find YOU, don't try to find US!
How scary for all involved....

Thank God for this miracle! And thanks to all those volunteers who helped search!
I can't imagine the relief this family must feel....

interesting, I was just talking to a guy I work with and his BIL is a professional search and rescue person and said that men/boys always travel when they are lost, greatly reducing their chances of being found, whereas woman/girls tend to stay put which raises their chances tremendously of being found

I'd find a nice open spot and wait for the helicopter to spot me... if there was one near where I got lost. Open areas are easier because people can see farther and horses and ATVs can get in and out. If you're down in a gulley around a bend no one will see you.

It probably also has to do with the difference between being 11 years old and being an adult. It would be awfully hard for an 11 year old not to panic, to sit and think through their situation, and to be patient while waiting to be found.

I am so glad that he was found safe and sound. I know his family's prayers are answered.

However, if you are lost and don't expect to be rescued, because, say, noone knows where you were going...
Then in that case follow water. Cities invariably pop up along water routes...

The report today on cnn.com said that when the searchers came looking for him, he got off the trail because he was taught not to talk to strangers. Um, I know he was a cub scout, but how in the world did he wind up that far out in the boondocks without knowing what to do if you he lost?? Another scout died up there a year or so ago because he got lost, and that scout's father was on this trip! I'm glad he's safe, but I think this could have easily been avoided.
Escher's advice is right on. Follow the water. Also look up at the trees--openings in the treeline can mean fields and sometimes lead you to water.

I kind of got the impression from another report on CNN that maybe this boy has some developmental delays (or at least they described him as being "immature" for his age and as having some verbal difficulties). So that might have contributed to his hiding from the rescuers, too (along with delirium).

I agree, I was thinking autism or somewhere on that spectrum.
I wonder if sending that little boy to camp was such a good idea.
