View Full Version : User Name - Nothing to do with food
woodsl

I am just curious about the meaning behind some of the User Names on this BB. Obviously, some are first names, but others make me think there is an interesting story behind it. If you are comfortable, what is the story behind your User Name?
Mine is not interesting. At work our user name must be our last name followed by initials, and I just used the same user name on this BB - I know, very boring. But, hence "woodsl" - "wood" (last name) and sl (initials).

Unfortunately mine is very ho-hum also. At work our user names are first initial, last name thus E for Elizabeth and Bobbitt is my last name. Of course, with a last name like Bobbitt I do get lots of comments. For the record, I'm not kin to her!

Good Evening woodsl.....you have to read this post back in Dec of 2000. It would be nice to hear from all the newbies though that came on board after the first of the year. http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif
http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/Forum1/HTML/003278.html
My real name is Maureen. I have two daughters- Kim and Allie so I combined the two and voila!! I know everyone probably thinks MY name is Kim!!

Maizeyoats.....well I have a cat named Maizey and where the oats came from I don't know. Maybe I was thinking of that song "mare's eat oats and does eat oats and little lambs eat ivy"

Mamasue,
Thanks for posting that thread - it was fun to read!! I hope all the newbies post on this new thread.

Maizeyoats,
That's so neat! I immediately thought of that song the first time I saw your name -- my mom used to sing that for us when we were little all the time http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif
Glad you started this. I got "aka" more by dumb mistake than anything. I wanted to go by my name ("Lilia"), but that name was already taken (Although, I think she is lurking...come out Lilia, we'd love to meet you!). Then I was going to do "Also known as Lilia" (akalilia), but it just got the "aka" part for some reason. I'm often tempted to start over back to junior member and pick a more practical LiliaP (using my last name), or pick the name of a flower or a book character...anything but "aka". I was so eager to join and I didn't expect there to already be a Lilia so when there was I didn't put much thought into it.
And that is the simple, but sad, truth.
Lilia

I thought of that song too. In fact, you know how you get a song stuck in your mind? Well, after I saw your name the first time, I walked around singing "mare's eat oats and does eat oats and little lambs eat ivy" in my head for about 2 days!!

My real name is Pam, and after enduring names like 'Pam-Ham', 'Spamela', and 'Bam-Bam Pam' (not what you're thinking, it's a Flinstones reference... http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/tongue.gif) there is no way I'd use any form of my name.
The story behind my nickname was already revealed on another thread, but suffice it to say that I didn't have wonderful luck with men my entire adult life, and always ended up with losers that treated me like dirt. When I found my wonderful husband, he nicknamed me Jewel, because he says 'One man's junk is another man's treasure'. Because of he and I together, I sparkle... http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/biggrin.gif

Jewel,
What a great story. Your DH sounds like a wonderful man!! I hear you re: dating crummy men. I am so thankful that some of those losers I dated when I was younger did not ask me to marry them. I might have done it! Yikes! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/frown.gif Fortunately, once I got older and "got my act together" so to speak, I met a great guy, and we have been married for 5 years.
By the way, I too know what it's like to endure awful nicknames. My maiden name was Suggs, and in high school my nickname was Juggs. Isn't that awful!! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/eek.gif Fortunately, although I went to the same college as a number of my high school girlfriends, that nickname did not follow me to college. But even though I lost that nickname, hardly anyone could pronounce my last name - I heard Scruggs, Scuggs, Scaggs, Sudds, Snuggs, Soogs, etc. I did not get married until I was 42, and I could not wait to change my last name to Wood - plain and simple.

funnybone
04-24-2001, 07:36 PM
My name came about because I have a good/weird/strange sense of humor. I wanted a name that related somehow to laughter. I'm not sure that "funnybone" is the best, but it is the first one I came up with years ago. I continue to use it in various places in one form or another, and was glad it was available on this BB.

I gotta add one more to that awful name thing. I almost married a man (one of the losers) whose last name was Avila. Could you imagine my name as Pamela Avila? They used to joke that if I was stopped by a cop I'd sound loaded as soon as I said my name! "No officer, I haven't been drinking!" http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/tongue.gif
aggie94
04-24-2001, 07:43 PM
The "aggie" is because I went to Texas A&M University. The "94" is for my class -- hence, Texas Aggie, Class of 1994 (even though I actually graduated in 95).
BTW, my "real" name is Eva.

Jewel,
I know we have now gotten off on weird names, but I have a cousin whose first and middle names are "Deborah Dee" (she goes by Debby). Her husband's last name is "Light" - so she is now "Debby Dee Light." http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/biggrin.gif Sounds like a stripper!! However, she has a very good sense of humor and takes the razzing very well.
schuh
04-24-2001, 07:55 PM
It never occurred to me to have a nickname for the internet. I really wish I had thought of something fun. Anyway, mine is the beginning of my last name. And I didn't know the UserName was cap sensitive, so when I try to put in Schuh it doesn't work. By the way, if you're thinking of how to pronounce it, it sounds like shoe. It does not rhyme with "duh" (as one person in my supper club thought -- you know who you are http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif).

Valchemist. Well, my name is Val and I am a chemist. So there you go.
And of course it is a play on the word "Alchemist."
My name is a little more understandable (i.e. less convoluted) than the username chosen by my mom, maizeyoats. Just teasing, mom. I like the name, because it reminds me, too, of the song we used to sing when we were little.

crlykat
04-24-2001, 08:32 PM
crlykat is a name that my then-boyfriend, now husband made up for me when I couldn't think of what user name to use for my first email address, about 5 years ago. (crlykat@address.com)
My hair is very curly and some of my friends in college called me curlysue (ugh), and my first name is Kathy. Crlykat fit me so well I use it for all my various email accounts.

Mine is the same as the first part of my email address...
I just came up the ama because my name is Amanda. At the time I came up with my email address, I was a flight attendant and 47369 was my employee number.
Someday I'd like to change it to something cute-I'd like to make it easier for people to remember.

Not terribly creative, first name and last initial, but it is easy to remember. In another Internet community, I am known as Gromit, who is the dog in the claymation shorts Wallace & Gromit. I am a big fan of Wallace & Gromit - high quality humor. Sometimes I go by PJRC2. PJRC is the internet domain and businss that my darling boyfriend and I own together. PJRC represents our first names and middle initials - Paul J and Robin C.

Good morning kim. yes, maizeyoates (mom) and I do live close to each other...only 35 minutes apart.
I drove over there a month or two ago to help her out with her new MasterCook software and at that time I mentioned the BB.
She is now hooked, as I am. We often chat about threads we have seen on the BB. Fun!!

My name is just part of my last name-nothing original. It's so easy to fall into the rut of using a name that is used on a daily basis.

My real name is Liz, and I happen to be an English teacher and cheerleading coach. Coaching is a passion of mine, and it actually takes up more of my time than teaching does -- my DH calls me a part-time English teacher and full-time cheerleading coach! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif
I'm on school vacation this week, so it's nice to be able to spend more time than usual on the boards.

Well, my first name is Traci, and my mother used to call me Traci June - although I don't know why. I grew up thinking that was my middle name and was terribly disappointed to find that it wasn't. (I won't share what my REAL last name is! I may have to get it legally changed!)

What a great thread...sometimes I look to read the "non-food" threads first...
My nick name began when I started having this "long distance relationship" with this guy from Australia a few years ago. We communicated via the computer for a long time before we actually met and the people I work with at the hospital went nutz...actually they thought I was nutz...thinking he could be some kind of psychotic killer or something...so They insisted I not use my real name...at the time my initials were G.A.B. And being a psych nurse and doing lots of talking...I lengthened it to "gabby"...after my long distance relationship became a marriage to the most wonderful man on the face of the earth...I added the "h" for my last name, which is Harries...hence "gabbyh".
Jewel...I love your story...I also have kissed lots of frogs along the way...Bryan is my third (and last) husband...and he always has said "Three's a charm!"

I find it hard to remember by debit card "secret code". The bank was bought out by other banks 3 times and each time I got a new card and a new code. It took months to remember the 2nd code and when I got the 3rd card all I could remember was the 1st code. I still get them confused. So when it comes to user name --- I gotto keep it simple.
Dorrena M. Ortega.
p.s. My husband is from Mexico. When we married I dropped my middle name (didn't care for it) and moved my maiden name to my middle name.
This is definitely a fun thread! I'll have to check out the older one for the other members that have already posted. My username is very boring. It's the initials of my name. My name is Heather and I've really enjoyed reading all the different posts that have come along. I just typed in a user name without giving it much thought when I first signed up....
I live in the Kittitas Valley of central Washington, hence KValley. It's also part of my home email address. What will I do if we move? Becoming a full fledged member was such a triumph, I can't bear the thought of changing my alias and starting all over, so KValley it is! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif
My real name is Julie.

My name is Julie, but an ex used to call me JJ. The 40 comes from the 40 lbs I wanted to lose when I joined this BB. (unfortunately, I haven't been very diligent and still have 27 pounds to go!!!)

Mine isn't very original, either! First name, last initial!!! But it's easy to remember! My first choice was just plain "Lynn" but that user name was already taken. But she (or he!) must be a lurker only because I've never seen any post by anyone using just "Lynn", and once I even did a search and still came up w/ nothing! So, "LYNN", if you're out there... please join us! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif

Me and my SO have a beautiful black mutt named Gertie. When SO and I started surfing the web and having to come up with "screen names" and "user ids" and the like, we thought we were being soooo funny when we used the dog's name. Ha ha, the dog gets e-mail now! Okay, so we're total goobers and why we thought it was funny is lost to me now. Perhaps we'd had some wine with dinner. But we've been using gertdog as a user name for a few years!
My real name is Stephanie and I'm a vegetarian living in Ithaca, New York, waiting impatiently for the first spring greens, etc. to turn up at the farmer's market. I've only been posting for a few days and I'm totally enjoying these boards!
tovie
04-25-2001, 01:40 PM
Well, they told us that we shouldn't use our real name in an email address in the learning about the Internet part of a computer class I had in college (which always cracked me up, since our college email was our first initial plus last name). So when I got my own email, I picked a name from some book I was reading at the time. I probably would have signed my first name, Becky, to messages but the first mailing list I joined had 4-5 Becky's and several Rebecca's as well, so I just decided there was no way I would add to the confusion and I signed everything as Tovie. Through several email accounts and various mailing lists, I found out that no one else ever claimed tovie (unlike just about everything else I tried <g> ) so I've just stuck with it. Someday soon I suspect I'm going to mess up and start signing things that way in RL too (g)
Julia1Pin
04-25-2001, 01:50 PM
In my core group of friends, we had 2 Julia's. WE were both russian, both went to the same middle and high school, both had the same interests, lived 4 blocks away from each other, and had really long last name.
So, I became "little Pin" (I'm 5'2" and Pin is the first 3 letters of my last name) and she bacame bunny or Yule(don't ask, we have strange friends).
When I started on the net, Julia1Pin was the only thing available, so now that's stuck through every address I have. Now that I'm getting married (in 3 days), am I going to have to change it to Julia1Koz? I think I might keep it the way it is...

Great thread! It's fun not only to learn names, but I like learning where people live.
Jewel & Gabbyh -- thanks for sharing your romance stories! How sweet!
Gertdog -- be sure to check out the "What's your favorite farmer's market" thread and post your vote, if you haven't already.
Makedah -- are you still out there?? Emilycat and I had the same thought...when you said you wished it was your real name, I was intrigued. Never heard that name before and, I must confess, I'm not even quite sure how to pronounce it. Tell us more.
As for me....first name and beginning of last name. I've never used SusanMac before, but kinda like it now (there are so many Susan's on the BB) I had tons of nicknames growing up because my maiden name was Ice (IceWoman...cold as ice...what a cool name...I'm sure you can guess them all). But those days are gone. Now people just don't believe me when I tell them my maiden name :-)

04-25-2001, 02:06 PM
Mbart is a compilation of the first initial of my first name (Mary), and first four letters of last name, which is the way we had to do our userID when I worked at Harley-Davidson! HDGirl, I thought you'd appreciate that! I worked in the marketing department...a fantastic place to work! I quit after the third child; the child care thing just got to be too much.
HDGirl, you'll have to let me know if you come to Milwaukee for the 100th year reunion, in 2003!
Anyway, love reading this thread, and love this BB!!
Carrie W
04-25-2001, 02:09 PM
Like many others, it's just first name, last initial for me. But that's a plus...I've been able to keep the same initials, as my married name starts with the same letter as my maiden name! Plus, I think it's a little more convincing for people to know me as "Carrie W", instead of my full name, Carrie Wu. I usually get strange looks when I walk into classes that I TA on the first day: although my husband was born in Taiwan, I'm your standard 5'4" blond scandinavian mix from the Pacific Northwest!
aggie94
04-25-2001, 02:17 PM
Carrie,
I can sympathize - I get strange looks also when people (who know me by name) meet me for the first time. I took my husband's last name when we got married last year - it's Herrera (he's 2nd generation Puerto Rican). I'm 2nd generation Chinese. So it's a big shocker when people meet me, especially since my first name (Eva) goes pretty well with the Hispanic last name (although it's pronounced ee-va instead of eh-va, like it would be if I actually were Hispanic). This never even occurred to me when I got married and decided to change my name. Maybe I should just put "aggie94" on my business cards!

This was fun reading!
Mine is based on my mom's pet name for me, Mandarin. The 2j is on there because when I first went online, Mandarin was already taken. So were Mandarin1, Mandarin2, and so on, so I tacked on my middle initial so I wouldn't have to go to infinity to get a username. Now it's just habit, and I don't have to worry about forgetting it. Oh, and a couple of you mentioned hating your middle name--I'm with ya there!

SusanMac -
My DH and I snowboard together in the winter (actually, we go to the mountain together, then he leaves me in the dust!), and we love to cycle together in the summertime. If you guys have bikes, either road cycling or mountain biking is a great way to spend some time together exercising and having fun. Or hiking is another great option, if you live near mountains (or even big hills!).
I enjoyed reading everyone's stories http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif
When I first started on line I was using my initials MD. This is almost always taken. I was about to get married and was planning on changing my name so tried to use MG or MDG. Again, almost always taken. So, I came up with Emdg. My name is actually Mary, but several of my good friends call me M (Em) my husbands name is Harry so we get called M&H alot...Of course we always hear how cute it is that our names rhyme.
Oh dear, two nights in a row and I am going to bed singing "marezy dotes and dozey dotes". I've got to stop reading this thread in the evening!
I think I posted on the history, my initials are jd, and some coworkers call me jd. Most others call me janet.

Quite a few years ago I had two seconds to choose a name for my email account, and I came up with something that nobody can remember, and I've been stuck with it since. From then on, I decided my first name is the best bet: simple, to the point, and definitely related to me http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/tongue.gif
Nice stories, everybody!

What a fun post to read. It is so nice getting to know the new and the old..errr..the juniors and the members on this BB. ( there..that's better..right http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/wink.gif } I have shed tears and smiled till my face hurt reading some of the posts herein. "Jewel"-you are one and sounds like you married yourself a "gem" too! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif I wish you luck with your surgery. All of you have such wonderful spirit, warm caring hearts and great wit--it comes through your posts throughout this BB. It's great to be here.
Now, onto the topic of this post...I picked "crazycook" because I'm a wee bit demented [just a wee bit http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/wink.gif ], have a "wacky" sense of humour and I love to cook. Also, if you saw me most nights in my kitchen you would understand the nickname. I'm usually a crazed woman tearing around like the Tazmanian Devil, trying to get something half decent prepared for dinner. The plus side is that my children would have me no other way.."crazy" that is. http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/tongue.gif "Mares eat oats and Does eat oats..." Heh, just wanted to get all of your minds stuck on the song...hehe...sorry, couldn't resist.

Crazycook,
My co-workers all probably all wondering what I'm guffawing about in here! You're post was a riot -- and I can say with certainty that you're quite a character yourself http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif

I love to make bread - all kinds - and this name seemed to capture who I am at this point in my life. A mama who likes to bake with her children.

Okay, I figured out the posting "problem!" Please excuse my repeating myself! How embarrassing!

There are a lot of moms and mamas on this board, but I use Mamacox because it is my e-mail address. I chose it because I wanted something easy to remember, and because I mostly write e-mail to my four children, who are scattered all over the US. Used to be a lot easier to try new dishes because we had 6 people eating, but with only 2 eating now, I have to either cut recipes down, or eat the same things several times, and I love to try new dishes. Of course, with 6 people, 4 of them children, someone would always go YUCK, even if it was something like roast beef and mashed potatoes.

My username isn't very creative just a hobby. I'm a librarian in SC. I usually go by Lisa

First name starts with "M" and the 4 star is from the Tennessee Williams play "Streetcar Named Desire". Blanche calls her sister, "Stella for star!" I think that's heavenly. OK Blanche was quite the nut, but for a southern girl like me it's wonderful. What could be better than being called a star? So I shortened it up to m4star!

Unfortunately, mine isn't very creative. It's just a combination of my first and last name. My first name is kind of creative though...Rindi (though I can't take any credit for it -- my Dad made it up! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif).
I've enjoyed reading about everyone!

I am a dental hygienist living in Canada and am a proud mom of two little ones-a 20 month old gigrl and a 3 month old boy. I am on mat. leave now and will be for a whole year. I just love relaxing after they are in bed by reading the different threads on the BB. It is especially nice to see a more personal side of things through this thread. My real name is Tania.

I thought I'd replied about my user name before but didn't see it on the old thread. Maybe it was another bullitin board http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif.
My real name is Angela (if I'm not mistaken, I think there is at least 1 other Angela on the board). Hlao is a rabbit from my FAVORITE book Watership Down. Amazingly that username was taken when I went to sign up for my e-mail so I added my birthday.
