View Full Version : New Exercise Challenge?

Okay, so every month or so, I pop on here and try to start something up, usually to be one of the ones to drop out.
It's that time again! :D
I would like to start a monthly thread where we set an exercise goal - say exercising 20/31 days or just to exercise as many days out of the month as possible. We could then post a weekly update thread where we could post our progress daily or just once for the week or whatever. I plan on having a running total on every thread that shows my progress as an incentive.
I was planning to use the summer to get back into a program but here a month has already gone by and no progress. :(
Anyone game?
It would start tomorrow.

Alysha,
I am game :)
Off the top of my head, I will go for 20/31 days. I have a work meeting that I will be overnighting, so those days are pretty much shot.

I'm interested too (as long as I don't have to analyze why I'm doing it or not doing it...). I've got the morning walk under control, 3 miles every day, but I need to incorporate some weights in addition to the walk. So my goal is to do resistance 3 days a week.
We are leaving on vacation for 2 weeks on the 6th so I may not be able to report my progress (or lack there of) since I'm not sure how often I'll have access to a computer.

Hey now, this is an exercise support group, not a therapy group. ;)
Hi Molli. :)
Okay, so that's 3 of us so far. If there aren't enough, we could always post on the daily "have you exercised today" threads and keep our running tally there.
We'll just see how it goes.
I'm planning to get to do some weights (at home or at the Y) and to walk the dog. I'll post when I actually do it!

Hi, I would like to join, too! I'm trying to get a run in 5 days a week, so I'll set a goal of 20/ 31 days of exercising. I didn't get the run in this morning, so I'll try to catch up over the weekend. I hope this thread will keep me on track. :)

I got my walk in with Bailey, so I guess I'm now 1/31. Or 1/1, depending on how you want to look at it. :)
Time to go run some errands and then hopefully fit in some weights too....

We took a nice walk around the block. Alysha, it is definitely 1/31. Look at it this way, you could have been parked on the couch, a walk is a walk is a walk. Count it :)

My way of thinking! ;) So I did my three miles both yesterday and today...still amazed that I can roll out of bed at 6:00am without the aid of an alarm clock! :p Will try to get the weights in this afternoon after cleaning the kitchen (looks like a bomb went off in it :o )...

I'd like to play, too.
I went to the gym this morning and did 60 minutes of weights and 30 minutes on the treadmill. I had not been since last Saturday. Now that I'm back on track; I plan to go to the gym again to tomorrow and do at least 30 minutes on the treadmill.
So my goal is 23/31. I will be out of town at least 3 days and then starting 7/30 until 8/20 I will be away on 3 consecutive business trips, San Fransico, Chicago, and Atlanta with long 12-13 hour days conducting a series of training presentations. I don't have veryn hight expectations for August.
Count me in for July!

You all are doing great!
Oh, I was definitely going to count the walk, I was just trying to decide whether I was going to track my days as 1/1 and on, or 1/31 and on.
I didn't do any exercise over the weekend. Saturday I really didn't have the opportunity and yesterday, well, I just let the day slip away. Today we have a parade, a tae kwon do demo in the park and then fireworks tonight, but I WILL get in a walk with Bailey!
Welcome Krystal and Terri. :)
Have a wonderful 4th everyone. :)

7/4 - 40 minute bike and lower body weights and abs
So far I am...

My plan is to go to the gym after work and do 60 minutes of weight training.

4/31--good job, Molli! I'm still at 2/31. I took a day of rest yesterday, then woke up too late to go for a run this morning. If I don't exercise in the morning, I usually don't exercise at all, so I guess I'll try to get that run in tomorrow.

Well, I missed ALL of the holiday weekend, but at least on the 4th we did some walking back and forth to the park, parade and fireworks. Hmmm...I may add up the mileage on those walks and see what I come up with. One of the legs was done in a partial slow jog to beat an approaching thunderstorm, so that part at least really was exercise. ;)
Yesterday I did upper body weights and walked Bailey.
Today I hope to get in a walk with Bailey later tonight.
So, as of yesterday, I'm 2/31.

Yesterday it took me almost 90inutes to get home from work, so I di not go to the gym.
Today I went before work and did 60 minutes on intense weights with myn personal trainer. So I am now 5/31.
It might be hard for me to achieve my orginal goal of 23/31 since I will be out of town for work 4 days this month, but I'm going to TRY.

Well, I'm in a funk. I have this recurring injury to the knee/hamstring area and it started acting up last week. This means no walking or lower body exercise for me until it clears up. I keep saying I may have to see a doctor about this, but then I go long stretches without any injury. It starts out feeling like I just have sore muscles, but the tip-off is that exercise makes it worse instead of better (whereas exercise, or at least stretching, usually helps sore muscles).
I tried walking Bailey yesterday because it felt a bit better, but it started to hurt and feels worse today, so I'd better stay off it. Very frustrating!
I am going to try to fit in some Pilates and/or upper body stuff today. I have to do SOMETHING!
Hope everyone else is continuing to do well!

Hi Laura. Well, I COULD swim, but it's just not something that appeals to me. :)
Well, I couldn't stand it last night and I walked anyway. It felt better than the day before, so I was confident that continuing to walk, at least slowly, was not injuring my legs any further. I HAD to get out and do SOMETHING!
Today we are off to the Y. I'll do some upper body exercises and some stretching. I'll save the walking for the dog...... :)
I think I'm at 5/31. :( But I'll try to make up for it this week and weekend. Even if it's with just 30 minute walks - I need to get busy!
Do we want to do these threads monthly with one long thread? Or monthly with weekly threads - such as August Exericse Challenge - week of...... ? I'd love to do this every month.
How's everyone doing?

I'm still "stuck" at 6/31. I had pretty bad insomnia both Sunday and Monday nights (maybe the chocolate ice cream I ate after dinner??) so I wasn't able to get up early enough on Monday and Tuesday to run. Yesterday I had to catch up on my sleep, and today we had to leave early to take the dogs in for boarding. Gee, I'm full of excuses, aren't I? :o
Anyway, we are heading to my parents' house for the weekend to attend our second wedding reception (we got married 2 months ago in Kauai). I imagine I'll have a little bit of time to either run or swim there.
Sorry about your injury, Alysha! I do recommend swimming---it's very easy on the joints and can be fun. :)

Eek, with my dad here this past week, I really fell off the wagon. I have been doing an ab workout each morning, but I am not really countng that toward my goal, so I am now just 8/31, I will be hard pressed to make 20/31 at this rate which was my unwritten goal. I am going to the Y later today. Actually DS will be at camp next week which should make things easier. Good job to everyone else.

Is it okay if I join this group a little bit late? Believe me I would be very content staying lazy until August and joining then, but I know I need to start exercising. I have a almost 6 month old daughter and I was one of the lucky ones who left the hospital weighing what I weighed pre-pregnancy and a week later weighing 5 pounds less….Before you get envious, I have put on almost 10 pounds since then. I have a pretty small frame and 10 pounds is really noticeable. It is so easy to snack and graze when you are home all day…and snacking and grazing I have been doing :) For me exercising and eating right have to both happen. If I am not exercising it is too easy to give in to fatteing food choices and to ignore sensible portion sizes. If I am exercising, I think a little longer and harder about taking that Third (!) piece of pizza.
Anyway, enough about that, I guess I started this challenge on Sunday, so there were 15 days left in July. I am going to make 12 out of 15 my goal. So far I am 3/3. I have walk/jogged (trying to get back into running) for 45 minutes Sunday, Monday and today. Pretty proud of myself because it is Nasty and muggy and disgusting here in Massachusetts.
Please feel free to Pm me and harass me if you don’t see me post soon. I sometimes drop out of these things :)

Well, I have returned from Scotland and rather happy to report that I walked 10 of the 13 days that I was there!!! The days are quite long there in the summer (sunrise is about 3:30) so Iwas able to get up at 5:30 every morning (except 3 mornings) and walk 4 miles on a wonderful country road (saw tons of rabbits, deer and other creatures). Most days we spent walking around the little villages we stopped at and one day was spent walking up and down Princess St in Edinburgh shopping (and while I didin't count it as one of my morning walks I did walk more than 5 miles that day! ). So that puts me at 14/31...

Well, I've had to move indoors since the Texas heat is still present at 5:30am...never mind the humidity! I tried to walk Friday but it was just too suffocating. So today I finally managed to get DH to change the inner tube on my back tire (my bike is mounted to a stationary conditioner thingy).
I really needed to do something since I had made a trip to the dessert buffet at brunch today :o so I rode for 45 minutes...walking for 1 1/2 hours is much more fun though! :p

07-25-2005, 09:44 AM
Today was 30 minutes on the bike and 15 minutes of upper body weights plus some crunches and pushups (whew...might need to bring back that pushup challenge! :o ). That puts me at 17/31 not bad considering 3 days were lost to travel.

Sneezles, your vacation sounds lovely and good for you on getting 17/31 so far!
I feel I have failed the challenge for this month. :( I am presently at 9/31, and even if I worked out every remaining day of the month, I'd still miss my goal of 20/31. The heat and humidity really did me in last week. I actually went running yesterday in 104 degree weather, and I stopped after 2.5 miles. It just wasn't worth getting heat stroke!
Anyway, I'm OK with not meeting my goal, and will continue trying to get in as many runs as I can. Hopefully August will be a little cooler (not holding my breath, though. )

Kristal,
Having grown up in Chicago's burbs I remember August being the worst month heat wise!
I can't seem to stay on the bike very long. After 30 minutes my bottom end is numb! And I have a new saddle (one of the good ones from Terry Bikes). But I guess 30 minutes is better than nothing.

I know it's really late to join in this month, but as was said earlier, I just need to get started asap! It is so easy to make these huge lofty goals ("make exercise a part of my normal routine") and not follow them. I think this sort of goal is just the thing for me. So, since there are 5 days left in the month, my new "goal" for the rest of the month is to work out 3 out of those 5 days. I would definitely be interested in playing next month as well.
Happy exercising, everybody :)
