when a receipe calls for tub fat free cream cheese --can you use block fat free cream cheese?

If baking, I use the block style. If used in dips, then the tub style works fine. I believe the tub variety is made to spread better as opposed to the block variety. This is my experience.

They're the same product; the block style is simply more convenient.

Block-style cream cheese is the same -- only it's not whipped like the cream cheese in the tubs.

Definitely, you can substitute -- and if you have trouble with the consistency, just add a teaspoon or two of milk to the block cream cheese when you mix it. Adding milk will give it a slightly smoother, more spreadable consistency!
