Hey gang-
I don't post very often, but I am an extremely dedicated lurker. I happened to enter the Reader's Recipe Contest at Epicurious.com for May - Best Vegetarian Recipe. I am a finalist!! So now I'm shamelessly asking for your vote. You can vote at the following site:
www.epicurious.com/ten (http://www.epicurious.com/ten)
Click on "Vote for your favorite vegetarian recipe." My recipe is the "Mediterranean Stuffed Peppers" close to the bottom of the list. Here's the recipe in case you're interested:
MEDITERRANEAN STUFFED PEPPERS
I developed this recipe after tasting something similar at a local Greek restaurant. Although it requires some preparation (such as cooked rice and lentils), I like it because the finished product is a complete and hearty meal.
4 large bell peppers, halved lengthwise and seeded
Stuffing:
2 cups cooked white rice
2 tablespoons pine nuts, toasted
2 green onions, chopped
¼ cup chopped fresh flat-leaf parsley, divided
2 tablespoons chopped fresh dill
1 cup grated zucchini
1 cup thinly sliced baby spinach
1 tablespoon olive oil
Juice of 1 lemon
1 teaspoon salt
Freshly ground black pepper to taste
3 cups fresh green beans, trimmed
½ cup tomato juice
Sauce:
1 ½ cups cooked lentils
1 14 oz. can fire-roasted diced tomatoes (such as Muir Glen)
½ cup vegetable broth
1 teaspoon dried oregano
1/4 teasoon salt
½ cup crumbled feta cheese
Preheat oven to 375 degrees.
Place peppers cut side down in a single layer in a large casserole dish or roasting pan coated with cooking spray. Roast for 25-30 minutes until soft and starting to brown.
Meanwhile, set aside 2 tablespoons of chopped parsley and then combine stuffing ingredients (rice through black pepper) in a large bowl. Mix well.
When peppers are done, remove from casserole and set aside to cool. Reduce oven temperature to 350 degrees. Place green beans in bottom of roasting pan or casserole dish in a single layer. Pour tomato juice over beans.
Divide stuffing mixture evenly among the roasted pepper halves and place on top of the green beans in pan. Cover the pan with foil and bake at 350 degrees for 35-45 minutes, until green beans are soft.
Meanwhile, place lentils, canned tomatoes, vegetable broth, oregano, and salt in a medium saucepan. Bring to a boil on high heat then turn heat to low and simmer sauce until slightly reduced, 15-20 minutes. Cover and keep warm until peppers are done.
Place two pepper halves on each of four plates surrounded by the cooked green beans from the bottom of the pan. Ladle about ½ C. of the lentil sauce over the peppers. Top each serving with two tablespoons of crumbled feta and the reserved chopped parsley.
Makes 4 servings.
Thanks so much!! Oh, and you can vote every day... :)

I had written to epicurious and received an email from them thanking me for alerting them to this prpblem, that they frequently have problems to happen and the only way they find out is if the consumer reports it.
Having said that, I followed "HealthyinMN's" advice and deleted cookies and was able to vote!:D I am in the process of sending everyone in my address book a reminder. I will mention that if they cannot vote to delete cookies. I just wonder why I was able to vote a few times before I encountered the problem.

Gecko
07-24-2005, 11:39 AM
I agree that something very strange is going on. Yesterday when I voted and then posted that Staceye was in the lead I am sure that the figures were around 25.5 (Seitan) and 25.6 (Peppers) - or something close to this. I just voted today and somehow Stacey has slipped to around 20% and the Seitan dish has gone up to 32%. Either there has a glitch with the counting or there is something else going on here that isn't right.

07-24-2005, 12:44 PM
I don't know much about how these polls work, but do you think someone at epicurious would be monitoring from day to day? If so, they'd have to notice the wild fluctuations in percentages.
I had insomnia this morning, and at about 2:00 am. the Seitan was around 26 or 27 percent, can't exactly remember. No one could gain 6 percent in a few hours, sorry folks, not even in a perfect world!

All I can say is Ms. Seitan (or would that be Satan?) is probably going to develop carpal tunnel sydrome from overusage of her mouse!
If someone really is putting in all that time doctoring the results, might I, um...well...um....respectfully suggest that they...uh...GET A LIFE!?

I'd have to do an unethical experiment to find out for sure  but I suspect there are literally HUNDREDS of votes going in for the Seitan recipe at this point. Somehow, I doubt there's been a national resurgence of Seitanic interest. :) We'll keep voting for Stacey, who I know has said she'd rather have an honest second place than an ill-gotten first place. Of course, that doesn't preclude us from hoping that the first place winner stubs her toe on her prize or something!

It's not so much the number of votes going in for the other recipe that bothers me (well it does a bit ;) ) but rather the fact that Staceye's votes seem to be going down rather than up. If we are voting for her how can that be? I know that when I voted yesterday her percentage was around 25.6 and now it is 18.9?

The fact that her percentage is going down doesn't mean that the number of her votes has declined, but that the total number of votes has vastly increased. If there were, say, 100 total votes and she had 20, that would be 20%. However, if there were a total of 200 votes and she had 20, that would be 10%. So...it just means that there are literally hundreds of votes going in for the other recipe. That's why the whole thing seems so...wrong!

Thanks! Now it's a bit clearer. So not only are there so many votes going in for the other recipe it is forcing Staceye's percentage down but the other one has also jumped from 25.5 yesterday to over 32. Wow that is a lot of votes. Definitely seems wrong somewhere along the line.

As my daughter would say, "That's just wrong!" She first uttered these words when she saw a man in a Speedo for the very first time (BTW, she's 12--:o--and he really didn't belong in a Speedo !)

Do you think that the vote counters will only count one vote per day per ISP address? So, maybe in the end our staceye will still win!?!? I hope so, because I have been faithfully voting my one vote per day.

They count 1 vote per computer unless you clear your cookies. Then, apparently, it's fair game. Have I ever mentioned that I hate cheating????

Maybe that is what Seitan is doing, clearing the cookies and just voting over and over for themselves.

Hey guys! Just got back from Myrtle Beach and went and voted and saw Staceye is behind.
It could be that she works in a governemnt office or any place that has a lot of computers and they are all voting for her.
Anyway, Staceye...you've got my vote.

Are you offended? Trying to figure out why.
I wasn't slamming you but pointing out that anyone who we might even suspect has tried to manipulate contest voting or hack into a BB and cause problems would certainly be savy enough to run a google search and probably a lot more.

Staceye, you will always be a winner to us :) It certainly was an achievement to have have even made it that far. And besides, I think a lot of people would be far more likely to make your recipe that the other one. Maybe it is just me, but I still can't get over the fact that someone would actually think of calling something seitan - even if it is not pronouced they way it looks you are going to forever have it mispronounced.
