View Full Version : Christening gift?
We are invited to my friend's son's Christening tomorrow. This is the first time I ever go to Catholic church, and I'm not sure if I need to buy a gift? They're going to have it in Saturday mass then they'll get together at their place for supper. I searched other thread about Christening gift and it seems like gifts are from Godmother/Godfather or special people? Is it appropriate just bringing a card or something? Didn't mean to be cheap, but we'll get his birthday presents and I feel like we just spent money on his baby shower gift....although I don't mind buy some stuff, toys don't seem so appropriate.
What do you think? TIA

I don't know the right answer here, but here's what I think. Since this is at a church, this is an actual baptism--as opposed to when people have a party to celebrate the baby's birth and call it a christening, but there's no religious ceremony involved. I think a baptism is too meaningful an occasion to be all about getting presents. I don't think there should be an emphasis on them at all. If I had already given a gift for the baby's birth, I don't know that I'd feel a necessity for a christening gift as well. (I have to say that my friends usually aren't all that materialistic and don't feel entitled to presents.) If I wanted to bring something, it would probably be a book.

A book is a great suggestion especially if you get one with a Christian story or even a baby bible. At a minimum I would bring a card.

I think most people will bring a gift.

i didn't expect gifts for my dd's christening (baptism). the godparents however got her a beautiful child's rosary and crucifix. they are very small and dainty and just gorgeous. there is also an excellent series of child's books that have a latch on them and a handle on the spine by which you can carry them. one is a child's prayer book and one is i think Jesus Loves Children or something like that. the illustrations are great and dd has loved these from 8 mo on up to 2 yo.however i think a card is plenty.
Thank you ladies! I bought a small book and a card. He's the second child and I know they already have 'several' children's bibles at their house. They had a very cute one, with a large cushy apple on the cover which would be a nice touch for a baby.
Everytime when I have questions (anything!), you guys come through. CLBB isn't only about cooking!!! Thanks again!!!
