View Full Version : Can I bake in a glass dish that doesn't say oven safe?

I am holding the first dinner of my supper club this weekend. I have glass bowls I want to use for dessert but, while they say they are dishwasher safe, they don't say they are safe for the oven. The dish I need to prepare is the Charleston Pudding. While the recipe calls for it being baked in an 8" sq pan, I plan on doing individual servings by baking directly in small serving bowls.
The recipe calls for a baking temperature of 350 degrees. Can I trust these bowls will hold up to the heat? What could really happen to them? Also, is 350 the right temperature to use since I'm going from a square pan to (13) small individual ones (I do plan to double the recipe).
Thanks so much!

If they don't say oven-safe, I wouldn't trust it. They could break, then your dessert would be ruined. Can you tell us more about the dishes? Are they a particular brand, part of a dinnerware set...?

I was worried that would be the response I'd get. These dishes are from Ikea, i.e. cheap, and I honestly can't afford to buy any others. They aren't type, but are clear glass and match perfectly with the plates I also bought from there.
In addition I really want to make this dessert. It's a Cooking Light recipe that I tried last week and loved. I'm praying that since the dishes are dishwasher safe they'll somehow stand up to the oven. I know I'm reaching with that. Maybe I should test it out tomorrow to see how well it does.

I think if they specified dishwasher safe but didn't say oven safe, it's because they're not. The temperature in the dishwasher will never be anything like 350 degrees. I wouldn't chance using the dishes in the oven.

You could always test it by putting some water in it, then put it in a roasting pan (to catch the breakage) and heat the oven to 400 for an hour or so to see if it survives.
Pyrex bakeware is pretty cheap, and they have some clear glass ramekins.
