View Full Version : Another Spice Storage Question

I've mentioned that we might tear out our step in pantry and replace it with ba cabinet pantry. If that happens, I lose the full door spice rack DH built for me, and I'm trying to figure out where I would put all my little darlings. I have a spot where I could put them on open shelves but am concerned about the light exposure. If I put them behind UV glass, would that protect them enough, or would the non-UV light still damage them? Anyone know?

It's partly the light, partly the heat that robs the powers of spice & herb. Best storage is cool, not cold, and dark, and dry. I loved having mine in a hidden lazy susan-shelf, until a mouse got in & gnawed through some plastic lids. The mouse is gone, and I keep spices in a drawer, but of course it's not as convenient to find what I need.
If you put only your most used spices out behind glass, and keep the specialty/rare recipe stuff more carefully, i'm sure you'd experience no real loss of flavor.

But what I'm trying to figure out is whether its the visible light or the UV light that fades them. Or both. We decided we might use a mix of stainless containers and cobalt glass jars, so we can deal with the light issue either way. But that wall space may not eb their new home now.

We saw a different refrigerator, and in the process came up with the idea of moving the pantry to a different wall. I'm going to sit down and try to sketch it out and see what that would do to my spices. Won't put them next to heat.
