I did a search and could not find a thread
for this. I've never made them from scratch before. I guess this also means I get to buy a special pot too? Usually I just "doctor" up the B&M brand.

Here's a link to a recipe that's gotten rave reviews... It uses canned beans, but I'm sure you could use dried if you wanted it to be really homemade.

This is definitely one I am going to try this summer sometime.

I'm happy to contribute an old family recipe that is out of this world. I ALWAYS get compliments when I make it for a crowd! You can double or triple it to feed more people. If you use 3 or 4 cans of beans, drain 1 or 2 cans as it will bake the finished product a little soupy.
1-16 oz. can VanCamps pork and beans (or vegetarian)
3 Tablespoons light brown sugar
2 Tablespoons vinegar
1 teaspoon dry mustard
bacon strips
Mix all ingredients well in casserole dish. Top with desired amount of bacon strips. Bake at 350 degrees 30-45 minutes or until bubbly.

Hi Jazzcat,
My mom makes fabulous homemade baked beans (I think it's a New England thing). I've only seen them made in a bean pot, so you may have to invest in one. She starts with dried beans and soaks them covered in water (in the bean pot) overnight. Before cooking, she adds molasses- probably about 1/2 a bottle, but more if you like them darker, less if you like them lighter- and a piece of salt pork. Then she cooks them on low heat (about 325) for several hours, stirring periodically and adding more water if they get dry.
I can get more specifics (although I know there's no "recipe") if you're interested. Good luck! I like them with a little mustard on them and french meat pie on the side, but that's another story...
