A disclaimer....I am from the midwest and don't remember any contact with them growing up. Now that Im in TX and we eat several a week, I realized I dont know how they grow...on a tree....in the ground...on a vine? Please satisfy my curiosity!
TIA

There is a joke in there somewhere, Kim!
My vote is a tree. Avocado Grove?
Dana
Hi. I'm new to the board, but I can tell you with certainty that avocados grow on trees! My in-laws have a large one in their yard in southern Florida.

Yes, avacados grow on trees in warm climates (S. California, Florida, Central America) and they take a year to grow and ripen (as opposed to an apple that takes 4-5 months)

I didn't know, either! A year to grow and ripen, I must savor each bite when I eat them!! Thanks for asking, who would have thought??

Good Morning Kim!
Here in PA, we don't grow them, can you grow them in TX? If so, please ship them to me, in a year!! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/wink.gif
PS - Summer vacation is coming!!
Haven't the kids changed SO much from last August (we start before Labor Day). I am so proud to see how much they have grown since then!! Have a good day!!

I am jealous- we go to June 7th, with no air conditioning! It is going to be a hot one today, and we are allowed to wear dress shorts!!
I have not taught SS but have tutored or worked full time in the summer/and during the school year, when not taking grad classes-TG that is over.
You really need a break during the summer.
Have a great day!!

You think that is bad -- we have classes until the 20th of June. This will be my first summer not teaching summer school (I'm justifying it with the fact that my sister is having her first baby in July) but I will probably still keep my waitressing job.

Oh my gosh,Jas, do you have air conditioning? Why are you going so late? We start in Aug. You will enjoy your summer with your new niece/nephew!!

I cant believe no air, and going to school until it starts again! We start in Aug and go until May. Its a pretty good deal!

We do have AC more or less (actually usually more in my room where I find myself wearing sweaters and telling the kids to bring in sweaters to keep warm) We must have all of the units on or it doesn't work "properly" (hot in some rooms and freezing in others).
We start after labor day by state law unless the district has a pardon from the governor (some of the coastal fishing areas get out June 11th or so)

We are sitting here in the fog with our sweats on. This is SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA!
Yes, we have an avocado tree below, but no fruit this year. Most subtropicals seem to have a good year and the next year not too great. Maybe this will be the good year for the macadamia! Got lots of valencias which I just coming in and always lemons.
