What Kind of Laundry Hamper Do You Have?

I'm getting ready to buy a new laundry hamper for my bedroom. It's long overdue. I've been using a large plastic bag for about 2 1/2 years :eek: Time really flies.

I'm curious to know what type everyone has and if anyone has a website that I can look at. I'm thinking about a woven wood one but I haven't seen much that I like in the stores. It will be in my bedroom so medium to dark wood would be perfect.

I use a laundry center type thing I bought at Costco for about $30-35. It has a chrome frame with 3 hanging canvas bags. I really like it.

The only exception is that my laundry center doesn't have the top rack on it. It only has the bottom portion. So, just picture it without the arched sides and hanging shirts. :)

If size is an issue, this wouldn't be the greatest for you.

I use a vintage hamper from the 1950's that is a semi-circle shape with scenes of chicly dressed poodles on the boulevards of Gay Paree. :D

We had cupboards built for the laundry baskets in our room though my DH tends to use the edge of the tub...claims he's letting it air out! :rolleyes: Such a thoughtful guy!
My sons use a system similar to the laundry center only it's made of pcp and they only have 2 bags (one white and one dark). DS#3 tends to use the floor until it's actually time to carry it all down to the washer. :eek:

I found one that I like a lot but not for $195. Although it's a lot cheaper than the $295 divided one. Still way too expensive.

In both houses, we have had two plastic laundry baskets in the closet, one for white (or light) and one for colored. This is very simple to use. Example: I pick up the full white basket, take it to the washing machine and start the wash. Put the basket under the door of the dryer. Transfer the laundry from the washer to the dryer. When dry, pull the clothes out of the dryer into the basket. Take the basket into the bedroom and dump the clothes on the bed for folding, hanging, etc. Put the basket back in the closet. There is no extra transferring using this method and it has worked well for 37 years.

Wow, you all are so much more organized than I am. I use Hezaj's method...when the overflow from the closet floor bridges the gap between the closet and my bed, it's time to do laundry. Or if I run out of underwear, whichever comes first.






But I can always buy new underwear.

Heeeeyyyy --- You must live at our house. :D We have a white plastic laundry hamper in the laundry room. The kid puts his stuff in there. But, we just put our laundry in the basket in DH's closet or sometimes I'm lazy and just throw it on the bedroom floor until morning. :rolleyes:

If you do decide on a wood or wicker basket make sure the inside is smooth so it doesn't catch on your delicate things (especially hosiery).

I have two small closets in my room so I really need the floor space for shoes and other stuff that magically accumulates there.

Most of the wood and wicker hampers that I've seen come with a removeable liner.

I bought two of these in black from Walgreens for $5 to replace a more bulky basket and I love them! When all of my clothes have been folded and put away, I can easily fold these and put them into a drawer or in the closet. These are probably more appropriate for a college dorm room than a 30 year old's bedroom, but I just love how convenient and inexpensive they are.

In our bathroom we have what gabbyh posted for our towels and stuff. In my bedroom closet, I actually use a really big plastic storage container with a lid b/c I don't want any smells getting out on my clean clothes. In my old house we had laundry cabinets built in and I loved it!

We are getting a new one too, but I'm not sure what.

My advice is of the what NOT to get variety. If you get one with a lid, make sure it says up on its own. Ours flops all around and when you need two hands to get laundry in or out of the basket, it scratches the wall. I also agree about making sure it isn't scratchy. I have pulled several silk sweater/ shirts on that darn thing!
