Well, it took the sting right out of my wise cracks about Martha (I'd hadn't made many, but nonetheless...)

That woman is one smart cookie. Grew up in a working-class family with strict parents, excelled in math and science in high school, went to Barnard on partial scholarship (working part-time as a model to pay the bills, of course), left to mary a wealthy law student (I don't envy that part) and later became a stock broker. She was pulling 6-figures in the EARLY 70s! She and her husband remodeled their 1805 Turkey Hill mansion by themselves. She started a catering company and the rest, is of course, history. Oh yes, and she had a daughter along the way.

By the way, she'd done all that and was in her early 30s by the time she started the catering company. http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/eek.gif Dang, I gotta be seizing the day a little bit more...

You have to give her credit, that's for sure. I didn't see the Biography, but I did see it advertised. I saw a clip of her on a commercial too - I think it was in the 50's, but I forget what it was for.

Anyway, I doubt she would have accomplished all that if she lived in the days of this CL BB. What else was there to do back then? LOL

I saw a lot of the show. She has worked extremely hard to become so successful, but it seems like it was at the expense of her husband and daughter. She's a total workaholic. There are only so many hours in the day. I think it's kind of sad. I guess everyone has their priorities...

I saw that bio, too. Amazingly, when she was starting her catering business, she really did do all her own gardening, decorating, cooking, etc. -- she only slept a few hours each night! While I admire her in many ways (just by being a successful, self-made businesswoman), I also wonder at what expense her success has come. Plus, since she continues to be very involved in every detail of her company, you wonder how much she enjoys her wealth -- it's not like she's taking a year off to travel around the world or go sit on a beach somewhere!

I saw that show. I thought it was brutally honest, but still made her out to be one impressive lady! I also caught her on "Car Talk" a few weeks ago and thought she was delightful.

I missed the show, which is too bad because I would have loved to see it. But here's my two cents, I've heard a lot about Martha's life. She married her husband and apparently did everything to make his life very comfortable. Imagine how cool it was for him when he brought the boss home for dinner??? Anyways, her husband ended up cheating on her with Martha's much younger assistant. Ouch!! That's why they divorced. And through it all she kept on going and built quite a pretty empire for herself. Not too shabby!

I'd say her ex-husband now wishes he had stuck around.

m4 -- it gets worse. He also fooled around with her sister. (They actually SAID this in the Biography!)

Is it just a dream I had or did I hear or read somewhere she was dating Anthony Hopkins? Who knows, it could have been the National Inquirer?

I saw the biography and enjoyed it very much. Although Martha's success may have cost her in her personal life, I admire her determination and skills. She's a very talented woman! I think the E network is going to show their own biography version this Sunday night.

I also heard the ANthony Hopkins rumor, and I believe it was on the news.

I think Martha's husband fooled around with her assistant, not her sister. Didn't want a rumor to get started. http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif

You heard it here first, folks!

Sorry, I could have sworn that the documentary said Martha's husband had an affair with her sister. Assistant, sister they sound alike. What's the difference, right? http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/eek.gif

I heard something about her not speaking to her sister, so when I saw the original post about the DH fooling around with the sister, I figured that is why they didn't speak. Oh well . . .

I saw the documentary, he fooled around with her assistant. There seem to be problems with her and at least one of her sisters, but I assume for different reasons.

Just thought all you Martha Stewart "fans" might like to know -- tonight's E! "True Hollywood Stories" features Martha Stewart.
Not sure what time it's on (as they say, check your local listings!)

Elnant...yes, I had posted that in this thread a couple days ago. I think it's on 9PM Eastern.

I read Julia Child's biography last year and the thing she said about Martha was that she didn't think Martha would EVER be truly happy.
Hmmm...something to consider when it comes from one who has lived such a full personal and professional life as Julia.

After reading all the responses here I was intrigued and ended up watching the "E-Hollywood Story" last night also.

I must take the show with a "grain of salt." As it appears to be pure Sensationalism.

Hat's off to Martha, which is winning her own game. She has created an empire for herself and has become a household icon. The more she is disliked, the more we want to hear about her! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif

I saw this too! I ended up feeling like she would never be happy. I felt so bad about her husband cheating on her and then dumping her. Especially when her family all described him as her soul mate, etc.

I'll guess I'll try not to roll my eyes when she's on TV as often. http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif
