View Full Version : what do you think?
I am starting to back to school to become a teacher. I am beginining next week on Monday. I had a problem with my AP at work to let me out early, but the good thing I had seen an advisor about my options are. He had recomended that I get certified in both areas ESE and Elementry Ed. I was thinking that might be a good idea. Do you guys who are teachers think this is a good idea to persue? Any ideas would be great. What is interesting is my dept chair at work thinks I should specialize in Autistic kids. I happen to love working with the kids at work who are autistic.
Thanks guys Matt

Matt - you've mentioned ESE many times, but many people here have no idea what it is. Could you explain?
ESE is exception student education. It is the field of teaching kids who have a learning disablity. It can include children or adults that have ADD/AHAD, specfic learning disabilties, autism, muscular dystrophy, Visual imapirments, hearing impairments, It can one or more learning disabilties. Or a reading disorder such as dyslexia or dyscalucia (sp) it is when you have a hard time understanding the signs in math.

Matt,
I think it is an excellent idea that you have dual certification in both special education and elementary education. While the need for quality special education teachers will probably never go away, having a dual certificate means you have the option to switch to an elementary class when it is time to do something different. Then maybe you won't burn out on teaching.
I have my BA in Special Education, K-12 LD, am getting my MA in reading, and will think about taking the elementary education test for certification in AZ probably in about a year.
I say go for it!

Hello Matt,
I am not a teacher, but as someone with a lot of life experience, I would like to encourage you to get as much education and certification as you can. The more options you have, the better the chance that you will always be able to get a job doing something you enjoy.
Good luck with your studies!
