This was such a fun cake to make that I wanted to share the idea and pictures. I made this cake for my niece Lila's 6th birthday yesterday. I made the cake layers on monday, frosted the cake and did the jello filling on tuesday, and on the day of the party (wednesday), Lila, her mom, julia, and I put the decorations on the cake.
Here is a link to the directions for the cake and a picture of what it should look like in the end. The "water" is made of blue jello and all the decorations are completely edible.

I also made a little side cake for the girls to decorate so that Lila could use the big cake for her second party with her friends on friday. (this was just a family party.)
Here are the pictures of the cakes in their various stages.

oh, and just because I am posting pictures of cakes, I wanted to share another one. Lila is a Scooby Doo fan, so this is the cake I made her last year. (she and julia helped a bit with the decorations there, too.)

Your bright, beautiful cakes captured the eye of my 3 year old who glanced at the monitor from across the room. He loved them! In fact he told me that he needed one...

Wow! Sure wish I had an excuse to make something like that - looks so fun. Don't know any kids, though.
Impressive yet again, Val! :)

All those yummy recipes, and so skinny already? Wow!

Val, that is one of the most creative cakes I have ever seen. Your palm tree is way better than Woman's Day's. You should send them a photo.
Thanks for sharing.

Val,
Great cake (and picture)! That kind of cake makes for some wonderful memories when kids become adults.
Tell me about the jello......do you scoop some out to go with each piece? Or do you cut into it as though it were the regular cake, and it comes along with the cake?

well, the cake was served at lila's second party with her friends, which I didn't attend. but I asked her mom and she said that she first scooped all the jello out and then cut the cake like a regular cake. I think if you cut the cake with the jello still in it, it would be rather messy/sloppy. not that six year olds care!
