am off to order Rachael Ray's kids cookbook for Nicholas.
My sister has this - when she bought it she thought it was meals for kids to eat, not necessarily for kids to make (her son is only 15 months old) - but she has really enjoyed the couple things she's made from it so far.
I wanted to post a link to this article about collecting cookbooks which is in this week's New Yorker magazine. I know many of us here on the boards will enjoy it:

Boy, can we relate to that article, or what? Thanks for the heads up on it.
Nicholas LOVES cooking and LOVES Rachael Ray just as much, so I thought it might be fun for us to go through together and pick out recipes to try. In fact, he's in charge of dinner tonight. In a new tradition in our house, DH cooks Wednesday nights, and last night, Nicholas asked if he could cook dinner tonight (more on the story on my web site). Not knowing what he was planning, I was happy to hear him request to make pizza tonight. :D

I am doing my best to not buy any new cookbooks - but I am sorely tempted by One Smart Cookie, since there has been so much raving over it. But now may be the time to build a good Christmas list with the desired books instead.

I decided to order Mario Batali's new one from The Good Cook- Molto Italiano. This is a fantastic book! I will make many recipes out of it I'm certain, but it really is a great book to read! Mario's style is so endearing, and I learn so much. I am going through it a chapter at a time, because I enjoy reading the forward to each chapter, and then I have to read the little blurb about every recipe. He makes me want to cook every single recipe in his book- the way he describes them...Seriously, if you are a fan of "reading" a cookbook- this one is a must.

I just got Vegetarian Suppers by Deborah Madison. So far I have made the stuffed peppers, a squash/pepper dish and a delicious, yet simple black bean and coconut rice recipe. I really like this cookbook since she focuses on simple, but fresh ingredients. I appreciate that her recipes are based on season so that I know I can buy a bunch of stuff from the farmer's market and find a recipe in that book that utilizes the ingredients.
I also got Boy Meets Grill by Bobby Flay for my DH since we finally have a grill. He has made one tasty marinade from that book so far.

Please post the black bean and coconut rice recipe when you have time...sounds delish
~Gail
Here you go:
Black beans with yellow rice
coconut rice
2 tsp light peanut oil
1 green bell pepper, finely diced
1 small onion, finely diced
1 bay leaf
1/3 cup chopped cilantro
1 garlic clove, minced
1 scant tsp toasted and ground cumin seeds
1/4 tsp chipotle chile powder (or in adobo sauce) or more to taste
2-15 oz cans black beans with juice
1 scant cup coconut milk
sea salt
2 limes, one juiced, cut into 4 wedges
For the rice:
Rinse 1 1/2 cups basmati rice. Bring 2 cups water and 1 scant cup coconut milk to a boil with 2 pinches of saffron and 1/2 tsp tumeric. Add the rice, and 3/4 tsp salt, cover the pan, and cook over low heat until the rice is done, about 20 minutes.
Heat the oil in a saucepan. Add the pepper, onion, bayleaf and cilantro and cook, stirring frequently for about 5 minutes. Add the garlic, cumin and chipotle, then the beans and coconut milk. Bring to a boil and simmer until hot. Season with salt and add fresh lime juice to taste.
To serve, scoop the hot rice onto a plate or pasta plate. Scoot the beans around the rice and garnish with the cilantro leaves, pickled onions, if using and lime wedges.

Exactamundo! Here it is:
PEACH OATS BRULEE
4 C unsweetened peach juice (such as After the Fall brand peach juice)**
2 C rolled oats (regular, not quick-cooking or instant)
1/2 -3/4 tsp. salt
1-2 Tbsp. butter
1/3-1/2 C brown sugar
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Pour the juice into a saucepan, cover & bring to a boil on high heat. Stir in oats & salt and return to a boil, stirring constantly for about a minute.
Transfer the oat mixture to a lightly oiled ovenproof 2-quart casserole dish
that's about 9x6 inches. Cover & bake for 25 minutes, until the liquid is absorbed and the oats are tender & golden. Remove from the oven, dot the top with butter, and evenly sprinkle on the brown sugar. Place under the broiler about 3-6 inches from the heating element and broil for 2-3 minutes, until the sugar is melted & bubbly. Serve hot, serves 4.
**variations-- try a combo of 2 C apple juice & 2 C pear juice in place of peach. Other good flavors that work well are apricot-apple & apple-raspberry juice. In a real pinch, use water instead.
I'm sure that if you have a kitchen torch, you could use it. I don't however.

Oh, and speaking of cookbooks, thanks to all you Small Batch Baking fans, I told a friend of mine about it, and she is loving it! She wanted me to thank you. --mari

Sorry i didn't see your post earlier, I was busy yesterday with my 8 year anniversary-- and today is my man's birthday!!

Thanks so much!!! Boy does that sound good! To Wild Oats to get peach juice!!! I do have a torch but it is still in the box in my storage room. Might have to pull it out and try it. I've tried a couple of baked oatmeal recipes from this board this summer and this looks like a great variation. Thanks Darla

My purchases this month are:
Flavors by Donna Hay
One Smart Cookie (how could I resist :D ) by Julie Van Rosendaal
Bake It to the Limit by Dede Wilson
A Passion for Preserves by Frederica Langeland
The Teen's Vegetarian Cookbook by Judy Krizmanic
and lastly
The Occasional Vegetarian by Karen Lee
I also purchased The Complete Book of Preserves & Pickles but it has disappeared in the mail. Luckily I didn't pay too much for it because the person on Ebay did not offer insurance and Ebay won't cover it because it is under their limit :(

Felice, this is one of my all-time favorite cookbook! Pretty much everything I have tried from it has turned out great. I especially recommend: Garden Salad Stock, Black Bean Soup with Sherry, Middle Easter Chickpea Soup, French Lentil Salad with Goat Cheese, and the Chocolate Angel Food Cake. I hope you will enjoy it as much as I do and I look forward to your reviews! :)

I hardly ever get to be in cookbook threads because I try hard not to buy them all the time, but I finally ordered The Wine Lover's Cookbook, which I've had my eye on for ages. I'm always looking for more ways to get wine into my life. :-) Should be here next week.

I did finally receive One smart cookie (ordered forever ago it seems)
I also saw CL's new Holiday Cookbook at Costco - I thumbed through it and saw that I had quite a lot of the recipes already in my piles so I passed but it looks pretty complete!

I borrowed this from the library recently and cooked several things from it - all of which were excellent. It's now on my wish list.
Enjoy it!

Veschke, please let me know if there are a decent number of non-meat recipes in that Wine Lover's book, it sounds like it was meant for me!!
