Does anyone have a source for dried strawberries? I just found a recipe for strawberry scones that call for it. I've ordered dried fruit from Martha Stewart's website but they don't have dried strawberries. http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/frown.gif

Thanks!

You might first check a healthfood store in your area, or a specialty grocer.

Otherwise, Graceland Fruit carries dried strawberries. They might even have a catalog!

Graceland Fruit, Inc.
1123 Main Street,
Frankfort, MI 49635

FAX (231) 352-4711

I've also seen them sold at http://shop.store.yahoo.com/chefshop

If you are lucky enough to have one, Trader Joe's carries them.

Just to let you know, Graceland doesn't sell for retail customers...I'd have to buy 10 lbs minimum of dried strawberries!!!!! So I ordered from the other source, chefshop.com

Philamark, could you post your recipe for the strawberry scones? I bought a variety of dried fruits, including dried strawberries, from a bulk food store and I was wondering what to do with them.

Thanks!

One of my favorite snacks is dried veggies and some fruits. I buy them from www.justtomatoes.com. (http://www.justtomatoes.com.) Everything they sell is ONLY the fruit or the veggie, either dehydrated or freeze-dried. No salt, sugar or preservatives. In the Pacific NW Larry's Markets has just started carrying some of the stuff also, but I order online. My favorite snack mix is the 'Hot' Just Veggies, which is dried peas, corn, carrots, bell peppers and jalepenos! Really tasty, you eat it like popcorn! The pineapple is very crunchy, not like the chewy dried fruit a lot of us grew up with. I got a sample pack of fruits the first time and was thrilled!

Here's the strawberry scone recipe..it's not low fat and it makes a lot...this was shown this week on Martha Stewart's show. I haven't made it yet but plan too as soon as I get the dried strawberries.

STRAWBERRY SCONES
Makes 14 to 16 large scones

4 cups plus 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
2 tablespoons sugar, plus more for sprinkling
2 tablespoons baking powder
2 teaspoons salt
3/4 pound (3 sticks) cold unsalted butter, diced
4 extra-large eggs, lightly beaten
1 cup cold heavy cream
3/4 cup small-diced dried strawberries
1 large egg
2 tablespoons water or milk

1. Preheat the oven to 400°.

2. In the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with a paddle attachment, combine 4 cups of flour, 2 tablespoons sugar, baking powder, and salt. Blend in the cold butter at the lowest speed, and mix until the butter is in pea-size pieces. Combine extra-large eggs and the heavy cream, and quickly add them to the flour-and-butter mixture. Combine until just blended. Toss the strawberries with remaining 1 tablespoon flour, add them to the dough, and mix quickly. The dough may be a bit sticky.

3. Turn the dough out onto a well-floured surface, and be sure it is well combined. Flour your hands and a rolling pin, and roll the dough 3/4 inch thick. You should see lumps of butter in the dough. Cut into squares with a 4-inch plain or fluted cutter, then cut them in half diagonally to make triangles. Place on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.

4. Make an egg wash: In a small bowl, combine the large egg with water or milk. Brush the tops with egg wash. Sprinkle with sugar, and bake until outsides are crisp and insides are fully baked, 20 to 25 minutes.

Thanks, philamark, it looks yummy. I'll try it the next time I hold a dinner party, so I can get other people to eat them: I really don't want all three sticks of butter and the entire cup of heavy cream on my tighs http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/tongue.gif
