I'm a stickler for this type of thing and I had some good websites bookmarked but they upgraded our server and I lost everything. Anyhow, I am writing a letter to a Sheriff and I'm not certain how to address him in the greeting. Should it be dear Sheriff "So-and-So" or Mr. "So-and-So" or Hon. "So-and-So"? Anyone know? I've tried doing searches for the websites I had on this topic to no avail sor any links would be helpful, too. Thanks!

I assume you're writing to him in his official Sheriff's capacity, so I would use "Sheriff So-and-So."

I would probably address it like this:

John Doe
Sheriff of Whatever County
Address
City, State Zip

and then open with:

Dear Sheriff Doe:

Hope this helps!

I'd go with "Sheriff." "Honorable" is used for judges. :D

I'd go with Dear Sheriff So and So.

It's also used for elected officials, such as County Commissioners. I suggested it because Sheriffs are usually elected.

My initial thinking is to use Sheriff, too, but I was hoping to find something to validate this. I'm sure I'm the only one who will care, but. . .

Manetta - That's a great site - even better than the one I used to have! Thanks. I shall use Sheriff "So and So". :)
