View Full Version : How long does your peanut butter last around a spoon?

I'm immensely curious about something, and I've been feeling like an oinker lately since my boyfriend and several of his friends claim that a jar of peanut butter would last them a couple of months. I'm sorry?
Now, granted, I have no snack food in my house whatsoever, no crackers, cookies, dried fruit, nothing. If I'm hungry, I have to make something. So when I have the munchies, the pb jar is where I head. But, it is a grand accomplishment for me to make mine last two weeks. The jar of natural pb I bought last Monday at Whole Foods was finished off this morning with breakfast. Granted, my bf attacked the jar several times with a spoon, but still.... what the heck is wrong with me??

We go through peanut butter fairly quickly in our house. My daughter loves it, and when I'm feeling hungry, but am on my way to run errands somewhere, I'll just have a spoonful of p-butter to tide me over. I suppose I could eat raw veggies instead, but no thanks! I love my peanut butter!

There was a tragic period in my life when I denied myself the joy of peanut butter (the mid 90s, when I was still counting fat grams, also avoiding butter and ice cream). Fortunately I gave up this nonsense and pb is now a diet staple. I buy Adams all natural, crunchy- it's got to be crunchy.
I don't consume that much though- all things considered (still counting calories, but fat grams be damned). A tablespoon with two slices of whole wheat bread 2-3 times a week. I'm using it more in recipes, but even then I'd say 3-4 times/month.
My motto is everything in moderation! Ben and Jerry's in moderation, Tillamook cheddar cheese in moderation, Pinot Noir in moderation, boysenberry syrup and pancakes in moderation....sorry, got lost there for a moment http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/biggrin.gif

My DD loves pb on the spoon! I like peanut butter, too, but I'm addicted to peanut butter-banana-chocolate chip muffins. That way I get my chocolate fix, too!

Depends on what shelf it s on ... I m pretty short (oops, diminutive or petite are the preferred terms) so the higher the shelf, the longer it lasts! First or second shelf, and one of my favorite brands ... it s a goner! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/biggrin.gif

Ours lasts about 2 weeks...if that!

It would last forever before I got married and had a child. DH eats it with a spoon even though I give him disgusted looks. DD eats PB just about every day. Its about the only protein I can get her to eat. I guess we go through a big jar about every three weeks or so depending on if DH is home or not.

Blue Moose, do you have a recipe for those muffins that you'll share? Thanks.

Peanut Butter-Chocolate Chip Muffins
2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 cup brown sugar
1 T baking powder
3/4 t salt
1 t cinnamon
2 large ripe bananas, mashed
1 cup skim milk
3/4 cup peanut butter
1 t vanilla
1 egg
1 cup milk chocolate chips
In one bowl, combine flour through cinnamon. In another, combine bananas through egg. Add wet ingredients to dry, stirring just until combined. stir in chocolate chips. Spoon into muffin cups and bake at 350º F until done (sorry, I'm not sure on the time).
I think I usually get about 15 muffins, but I fill the cups pretty full http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/biggrin.gif.

Those muffins sound yummy!
I like to eat peanut butter straight out of the jar with a spoon. I guess I always thought that I was the wierd one because DH would just look at me and shake his head. I tend to eat things straight out of the refrigerator, though, like leftover chili or meatloaf, so I thought that the peanut butter was just part of that. Have you ever put peanut butter on a granola bar? Those are great!

Thanks Blue Moose. My farrier is coming Thursday morning so I think I'll make these Wednesday night and leave some for him Thursday. He always loves my little surprises.

That's funny - and just like me, too! It was always a hilarious joke in my family that they could hide all kinds of goodies on top of the fridge and I'd never find them.
As for peanut butter, I go in phases of eating and not eating it, too. But when it's peanut butter time, I have no qualms whatsoever about eating it off a big ol' spoon.

Well, after reading the couple of threads about peanut butter, I just had to go get a spoonful! I don't know what it is about the stuff but it doesn't last long around here! And I never ate it off the spoon in front of my boys but I have caught all 3 doing it (and feigned horror, mind you!).

Peanut Butter is one of Heaven's little gifts, and we should NEVER turn down one of Heaven's little gifts. I don't allow myself to eat it off a spoon anymore, considering Peanut Butter is my drug-of-choice! (12 Step Program for Food Addicts...)
I do, however, allow myself about 2 TBS per day on my 9-grain toast in the morning, or in a spicy Peanut Sauce over noodles. Peanut Butter lasts in my home ONLY due to my newfound ability to exercise portion control! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/biggrin.gif

I'm with Jewel. Peanut butter lasts a long time in my house only because I am trying to cut down on all the fat in it. But, Emily, you shouldn't worry--if I ran as much as you do, you can bet I'd be chowin' down on big ol' spoonfuls of the stuff everyday (I speak from past experience).

In my house - we usually eat in phases. I'll get on a deli sandwich kick or egg/chicken/tuna salad kick and forget all abou t the PB. Then, usually when I'm broke, I remember that big jar of PB in the closet and it's gone in a week. And it's yummy every day for days in a row. Now that I'm out, I'm wanting it back. Thanks for the reminder!

It lasts months in my house. I really don't get the urge to eat it often - I guess its the "sticking to the roof of the mouth" I hated as a kid. My one son will eat it, and the other only on occasion.
After the jar has been around for a while, I make cookies from it. I buy just plain old Skippy.

A little OT but-
I bought some Soy Nut Butter at Harry's this weekend. I know that I need to get more Soy in my diet and I was hesitant, but it is quite good! And this brand (I.M. Healthy) also makes those little snack packs with pretzels and about an ounce of the soy nut butter that I can have before I go to the gym, so that's good.
How does everyone else feel about soy nut butter?

Aaahhh, peanut butter makes me want to http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif
I eat the stuff off the spoon quite frequently, as does my boyfriend. A jar doesn't last too long, between the spoon, pb and j sandwiches, and anything made with peanut butter. I don't think I could ever get enough of it!
Like the slogan for cheese...behold the power of peanut butter http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/biggrin.gif

This is one of many "TUB 'O ---"
things I buy in bulk. We (I)cannot
live without it around here and I make it with fresh peanuts when I can.
We eat it off a spoon, with a sandwich, in entrees, soups, noodles-whatever! I just made the recent pb pancakes too. In my house there is always someone getting in the tub
daily! When I crave it I make a 1/2 sandwich on wheat, and it holds me for a couple days. http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif Zinnia

Count me in as one of the addicts! Dear fiance and I are both stumped at what to eat for snacks and breakfast if we are out of pb. I eat it just about every morning on my whole wheat bagel--yummy!
And anything with a peanut sauce is always a huge hit at my house! Mmmmm--love it.
ps...Just opened a new jar yesterday...will have to time its disappearance! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif

I just tasted soy nut butter the other day and I was unimpressed. Definitely not a substitute for peanut butter for me. I get soy in lots of other things so I indulge myself in peanut butter.

I made peanut butter balls out of 1/2 soy butter and 1/2 peanut butter at Christmas and nobody had a clue. DH, who won't eat anything "good" for him, gobbled up lots of them. I don't think that soy butter is a substitute for peanut butter, but I do like using it.

I think this is one of the few vices I DON'T have, but I have plenty of others.... http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/biggrin.gif
PB lasts quite a while around here - no spooners - yet (my kids are still little).

One of my family's favorite guilty pleasures was the Reese's peanut butter cup sundaes at Friendly's restaurants. Vanilla ice cream with fudge sauce and peanut butter sauce. Yum! The Friendly's around us closed, and I was craving one, so I microwaved some regular peanut butter to soften it, and put it on ice cream with some warmed hot fudge sauce. YUM! Not something we do very often, though!

Every now and then I'll crave that half a peanut butter and fluff sandwich, but very rarely. I enjoy peanut butter, I just don't eat it that frequently.
I tried it on toast for breakfast, but that early in the morning, it literally made me gag. I wish I could do it for the protein boost, but I couldn't get it past my lips. How weird is that.
My DH eats peanut butter on his bagel every weekend morning for breakfast.

I eat peanut butter straight from the jar. Not frequently, but occasionally. Especially when I am making dinner but am already soooo hungry I can't wait for it to cook!
When I *really* need an indulgence, I scoop a bit of peanut butter onto the spoon and then dot it with several chocolate chips. Voila! Instant Reese's peanut butter cup on a spoon! My SO was horrified the first time he caught me doing this... http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif
I guess this means that most of you aren't familiar with the smell of rancid peanut butter, then...
My husband and son are avid peanut butter fans. Me, I kind relate to that poor doggie on the "Got Milk?" commercial.

Kim: when I was a kid I used to eat a bowl of pb and honey when I got home from school. Can you tell my mother worked and did not know what I did when I came home? http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/wink.gif

Thank heavens! I thought I was the only confirmed PB addict. We used to buy Jiffy in 5 pound cans from Sam's Club but now buy the natural style in 1 pound increments. At first the natural style didn't taste good off the spoon, but now it's simply delish.
Between my hubby and I, we can go through a pound a week. I've been trying to cut down, though. My after-work binges are taking their toll on my hips.
Maybe some for breakfast tomorrow...

and i thought i was the only one to sprinkle my spoonful of peanut butter w/ chocolate chips! i've done that since i was a kid. but it only happens now when i've been baking and have left over chocolate chips in the house.

Peanut butter can last a long time around my house. I have a hard time with the texture. The only way that I can eat it is on something with texture like crackers and toast.

Well, y'all, I feel much better now -- SusanT, I'm glad I'm not the only one who sails through a jar of the stuff.
Nevertheless, I only buy it when I need it for a recipe; otherwise, I'd spend way too much money on it each month -- oh, and I'm proud to say, I've started buying the natural kind -- Wahoo! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/biggrin.gif
The 365 brand from Whole Foods -- I loved it. Yum.
Oh, and Kim, that Karo syrup thing is pretty disgusting http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/tongue.gif

Emily: How could you do this to me? Now two days in a row I have had a huge spoonful of peanut butter when I got home from work ("to tied me over until dinner"--yeah right). I had been being so good but I had forgotten how yummy it is. I think that's my favorite way to have peanut butter, actually. Well, a spoonful is probably less than I would put on a peanut butter sandwich.
