View Full Version : Best of May 2001?
Since I stay behind on cooking from my issues as they come, I always look back at past threads about certain issues. Someone did a post of the best of March that really helped me recently. Before we move on to June (since it's been spotted) will you all tell which recipes were winners from May? Thanks!

We really liked the rice pudding recipe. But that's all I've had a chance to make so far http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/redface.gif .

I have only been able to try the Oven Fried Thighs with Mustard sauce as I have so many recipes.

Boy, it doesn't seem like I got a chance to make much from May. I guess I was too busy making risottos. http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif
One that I've made multiple times is the sesame roasted asparagus . We also liked the Boka Dushi and the chicken and broccoli with black bean sauce even though we haven't repeated them. Just too many recipes and not enough time!

Garlic-lime chicken thighs, for sure.

We tried the Sesame Roasted Aspargus, Sizzling Salmon and Spinach Salad with Soy vinagrette, and Asparagus Turkey Wraps with Roasted red Pepper Mayonnaise... and we loved each one! I have made all but the asparagus more than once already! Definately recommend these to anyone who hasn't already tried them! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/tongue.gif

The Boka Dushi was really good. We also liked the oven fried chicken w/mustard sauce, and the garlic lime chicken was alright too. We also loved the orange tea cake. I really liked the May issue!

I too still have many to try but here's the ones that stand out so far from May:
Oven-Fried Chicken Thighs in Buttermilk-Dijon Sauce
Grilled Pork Tenderloin with Apple-Ginger Sauce
Cookies N' Cream Ice Cream
Vegetable Fried Rice with Pecans & Ginger

I'll second Kim's suggestion of the Grilled Pork Tenderloin with Apple-Ginger Sauce . I forgot that I had made that one also, and that it was really good. I guess I've made several recipes from May, after all. Seems like it's just been sitting in my drawer all month.

I loved the garlic and lime chicken thighs. I made them a couple of weeks ago for guests and they all seemed to like it.
I also loved the roasted asparagus with sesame. That was terrific.
I also tried the carribean jerk pork tenderloin. It was good, but not at the same level as the chicken thighs.

Okay, let's see...
I, along with everyone else, loved the Sesame Roasted Asparagus.
I also thought the Arugula, White Bean and Roasted Red Pepper Salad was delicious, and the Orecchiette with Broccoli Rabe and Smoked Cheese was awesome and very easy.
I really want to try a couple of the fish recipes, I just haven't gotten around to it yet. Eva said it best -- there are just too many wonderful recipes, and not enough hours in the day to make them all!

I have to say that May has more recipes that will make it on my list of regulars than any other issue!
1. Sesame Roasted Asparagus
2. Oven Baked Thighs with Buttermilk Sauce
3. Cookies and Cream Ice Cream
4.Asparagus Pesto Melts (YYYUUUUMMMM!!!)

I don't know if I was just having an off month, but I personally didn't see much in the May issue that I really wanted to cook. I'm not really big on chicken thighs (I like white meat) so that whole article was out. I may try the tofu mousse, but its not that pressing. I'm still trying things from the first three months of the year. I am eagerly anticipating June hoping I'll see more that I like.

May '01 is my favorite issue thus far this year. We eat a lot of poultry, so the chicken thighs article was a boon. My list of "yet-to-try" is still longer than my list of "I-would-make-this-again" but here is what I have made so far that I would repeat (the starred ones are particularly good (IMO):
Stir-fried Chicken and Broccoli with Black Bean Sauce*
Chicken Thighs with Garlic and Lime
Oven-fried Chicken Thighs with Buttermilk-Mustard Sauce
Chicken Thighs with Goat Cheese Sauce and Tarragon*
Jamaican Jerk Pork Tenderloin
Chickpea-Vegetable Salad with Curried Yogurt Dressing (great for potlucks)*
Sesame Roasted Asparagus*
Chocolate Mousse*
Barbecue Roasted Salmon
Baked Cheese Polenta with Swiss Chard*
Moroccan Chickpea and Couscous Stuffed Peppers*
Arugula, White Bean, and Roasted Red Pepper Salad
Incidentally, I didn't care for either the Spring Strawberry Pie or the Butter Rum Pudding.

bosunswife,
I can relate to what you said about the May issue, I thought it was just me being "off" this month. I am having a few hormonal changes, after all.. but still...normally I find lots of desirable recipes in every issue!
However, we loved the above mentioned Oven Fried Chicken Thighs with Buttermilk-mustard sauce and the Chicken Strudel
The Orange Tea Cake is on the menu for tonight....

KValley-
isn't it funny how different people sometimes see the CL issues? I have seen your reviews on different food items and always usually concur with your opinions! Great taste, I might add.... anyway, I must admit that I didn't make many items from the May issue, because they just didn't "grab me" right. I was definitely pleased with the items that I did make, however. I definitely need to give it another chance, me thinks. Maybe I was indeed having an "off" month.

I also found May unexciting. I've made only two recipes from it so far.
Barbecue Roasted Salmon was excellent, will definitely repeat
Chicken Thighs With Sweet Red Onions and Balsamic Vinegar was okay, but probably won't repeat.

I think this thread is fascinating- reading the different reactions to the issue. I wonder if CL is reviewing this- I can picture the editors just scratching their heads, wondering how they can possibly please this bunch with our discriminating tastes, and taking note of the recipes which show up repeatedly on the thumbs-up lists! Thank you for your confidence in my reviews http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/redface.gif
I make out a list every month of the recipes that I want to try and slowly work my way through, occasionally deleting or adding one based on reviews here. I still have 16 from May to make- it will never happen (add these to the 21 from Jan/Feb., March, April still on my list).
Tonight it's leftovers! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif

Here's my input of recipes I will repeat:
Chicken thighs with Garlic/Lime sauce
Spring Risotto w Peas and Asparagus (like many other bb'ers, I added shrimp and parmesan and used frozen peas)
There's several more on my list to try. I'd better get cracking before June arrives!
Bosunswife...you may want to try the chicken thighs anyway. I'm a strictly white meat person too, but thighs are kind of in between. They aren't as dark as legs and they're REALLY tender.
[b]Bosunswife[\b] - I am with you on May. I just realized I haven't made a single thing out of it - very unusual for me! I will go back and check out some of the ones that everyone else liked though - I probably missed something.
New Bon Appetit came this week though and looks good...hoping CL will show up today!

Definitly the Chicken Strudel it is amazing! I made it for dinner guests and Everyone loved it! In my opinion, if I had to choose 1 recipe from the May issue it would be without question the Chicken Strudel!

April and May are crazy at my house, so my cooking becomes reduced to whatever's fastest or is in the fridge. I think the only thing I've tried was the Pork chops with mustard sauce (it was in the 30 minutes or less section; not sure if April or May issue). Anyway, it was great! The first time, the pork took a long time to cook (used a meat thermometer); and the sauce cooked way down and was very dark and thick. Second time around, I cooked the meat longer before adding the sauce, so it wasn't as thick or dark. I think it tasted better the first way!

I really liked the lemon sponge cake with strawberries. I made it for guests, and everyone really liked it. It's definitely on my list of repeaters.
We were on vacation for a week, so in getting ready for vacation, being gone, and now getting back into the swing of things, I haven't cooked much. But tonight I think we'll have one of the chicken thigh recipes. I actually prefer dark meat to light, so I was really happy with the Chicken Thighs article! Now I just have to decide which recipe to try first! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/confused.gif
