Loved this article from last week's NY Magazine on the cupcake wars of NY -- and the blind test taste garnered dismally bad reviews for ALL the cupcakes.

LOL at:
"Basically, if baking in Manhattan were the drug trade, then cupcakes would be crack cocaine: cheap, profitable, available in bulk, and prone to creating repeat customers."

Was the blind taste test part of the article? I think I missed it...
The whole thing is so ridiculous. Almost makes one worry that if they attempted to bake a cupcake, that Appel woman would swoop in and screech "I invented that!". And anyway, she is in Midtown Manhattan, all the way to the East Side, and the other guy is in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn: miles apart! Surely there is room in NYC for more than one cupcake bakery. I mean, if I lived in Brooklyn, what would I do to satisfy the desire for a bad cupcake? Get on the subway for a long ride to HER bakery?
I used to work a couple of blocks from the Magnolia Bakery, and I just had to satisfy my curiousity about their products...well, they are ok, but nothing I would go swooning and suing about. I like my own goodies better.

to me, there is nothing overly special about magnolia OR buttercup cafe. I think I've ranted about the buttercream over the top-ness of the decorations etc. Butter cup cupcakes are good, but I think the appeal is the store..it's got that sort of nostalgic feeling while being a store front. I personally like more of a cafe type feel. It seems like the big argument is that buttercup is looking for serious expansion..the owner of magnolia is happy with containment. I don't *think* buttercup will ever be the starbucks or the dunkin donuts, but who knows? If Oprah endorses it, Im sure it will fly off the charts :D Personally I like my little Polish bakery in Bayonne.
