My DH and myself are planning a neighborhood "Castaway Party" for 6/24. We are inviting 25 homes, which is approximately 75 individuals. Kiddies are also invited.

It's a pool party, involving "stranded beach attire", tropical music and a buffet. Each guest is to bring a dish, along with their entree to BBQ. We're furnishing drinks.

Any ideas for entertainment besides music? Only about half the people know one another.
Our pool is a diving pool, so it doesn't work very well for water sports.

Thanks in advance for your help! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif

foodiedelite, i can't really offer you advice on your post (except to get nametags for everyone) but i wanted to share with you an invitation idea that might work. you may already have one, but if not, this is really cute. you take a bottle (such as an empty bottle of beer - take the label off) fill it with some sand. then print out the invitations on paper and you can burn the edges with a match (or make it look old and weathered). roll up the invite, place in the bottle with the sand and leave on neighbor's doorsteps. sort of like a 'message in a bottle' look. you would just need to start drinking beer to accumulate the bottles to do this! good luck!

Goldilocks,

What a cute idea! I hadn't thought of that. We're not big beer drinkers around here, but maybe for another party.

I bought a large bamboo beach mat and have cut it up into smaller squares and have printed invitations on the computer, adhered to mat cut outs and glued small sea shells along the edge.

Thanks for the name tag idea too. http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif

the beach mat idea sounds great too! are you looking for icebreakers or will you let everyone mingle on their own?

Foodiedelite- Did you watch Survivor? Maybe you could play a scaled down version. Or how about best attire contest? You could also say there will be dessert contest. Have everyone vote. This will encourage people to bring really good desserts and will create conversation.
And hey, 6/24 is my birthday. Can I come?

Tiger and Goldilocks,

Thought we'd start by having everyone mix and mingle. We had a get together about a month ago and it's a diverse group. The majority are 50-80 years old and then there's a hand full of us which are younger with families. I was considering Tiger's Dessert idea, but we have a lot of dieters and diabetics in the group. The Attire Contest sounds great, so I'm adding that with a gag prize.

I was also planning on making a potent champagne fruit punch--along with other mixers to add to the party spirit. http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif

My sister and her friends played the "Survivor" board game at one of her parties (not a theme party)
You should be able to find it at a store like Walmart or Kmart!

Elnant,

Do you know if the Survivor Board Game is for a large number of players? I won't use it for this get together, but have something coming up in September it may work for.

After all my concern, this castaway party is coming along. The invitations are going out next week. For entertainment I came up with hula dancers (from a dance school.) For the kiddies at the party, I have planned islands of entertainment--one island Hawaiian Paper Dolls, etc.

Now just to wait for the RSVP's......

Sorry it took so long for my reply.
I just talked to my sister -- the game is for 8 players.
But it's just like the "Survivor" TV show;
you vote people off as you play. So you'll start with 8, but players get eliminated from the game one at a time. Hope this answers your question -- if you have any more, just ask! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif

You know -- I was just thinking -- it might be fun to get 2 games going, like the two tribes they have when they start "Survivor." Then when you've voted a bunch of people off, and narrowed the gamed down to just a few players, you could combine it into one game...
It's just a suggestion (I've never actually played before..)
