I would give this recipe an 8 or 8.5. I could not believe how tasty it was, and there was no hint of tofu-ness. I thought it was a bit troublesome to make, but that might have been because I tried to whip it up over my lunch hour. I think I might try it with raspberries when they come in season---chocolate raspberry mousse sounds divine. It might also be good with darker chocolate if you like that sort of thing. The sugar syrup makes it sweet enough, and I like my desserts a little less sweet.

I hate to be a stick in the mud but I didn't enjoy the Chocolate Mousse. Perhaps I did something wrong when making it....I read all of the wonderful reviews so I was really looking forward to it. It was gritty....YUCK!!! I don't like the smell of tofu and I thought the mousse had that "tofu smell". I was hoping that the chocolate would cover it up but I didn't think it did. My husband like it so maybe it is just me..... http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/frown.gif

Jessica I agree- this was terrific! DH couldn't believe he was eating tofu. It was so simple to make and delicious. Good idea about the raspberries- I think that would be an excellent addition.

Don't know what to do about a tofu smell. To me, fresh tofu does not have any smell and all I smelled was chocolate.
The grit probably comes from the chocolate. I know that when I add melted chocolate to something it sometimes gets gritty because the chocolate starts to harden. I just processed the tofu/choc mixture a little longer until it was smooth.

You are not the only stick in the mud. I did not like the mousse very much either, although I really, really wanted to. I thought it had an "off" taste, sort of like the taste of chocolate diet foods. The more shaved chocolate we sprinkled on it the better it was, but that seems to defeat the point. My husband and sons were not impressed, even before I told them it had tofu in it. Also, the process of making it made a fairly large mess. Gaye

Well I'm still undecided about this recipe. The recipe didn't state wheter to use regular tofu (the kind in water), or "silken" tofu - the kind in the aseptic box. The regular stuff is in a 12 oz. package, and the silken stuff comes in a 12.3 oz. box (which is what the recipe states).
In any case, I used the regular stuff, since in my experience, if they want you to use silken they will specify that.
While the flavor of this mousse was good (I didn't taste any tofu whatsoever), it was rather thick and heavy, not very light and "moussey" as it appeared in the picture, and as I had expected. I may try this one again using silken tofu, but I really wish they would specify.
Which kind of tofu did everyone else use? Oh, and I drained the heck out of the regular tofu that I used. I squeezed and squeezed and squeezed until it was as dry as I could get it - maybe that was my mistake?
But it wasn't bad enough not to eat! And I've got 5 more in the fridge.....they'll get eaten too!

Grace I used Mori Nu lite silken tofu- it was in a 12.3 oz package.
I don't eat tofu often, so if there was a tofu taste, odor, or grit, I think I would pick it up (as I'm not accustomed). Nothing- just rich and chocolaty. I've also never made mousse before and I was just pleased as punch with the results- it was so easy. Can't wait to serve this to one of my brothers, who abhors tofu!
I agree- it is a bit dense, but would additional meringue, maybe another egg white, help to fluff it up?

Just wanted to say that when I tried this again two days later it was much better! (Any food professionals out there know why?) I have no idea why. It was still very light and fluffy but no longer had the "off" taste.
In response to the questions about what kind of tofu and whether or not to drain it: I used regular (not silken) and let it sit in a colander for a few minutes to drain but did not press it. The end result was very fluffy.

Well, I finally got around to making this last nite and it was really great! I used the silken tofu and blended it really well. My egg whites did not fold in that well and left some tiny white specks in the mousse, but it did not look unappealing. I gave this a 9 out of 10. My DH loved it too, even though he is getting sick of me putting tofu in everything!

I made this tonight with the silken tofu. It didn't seem dense at all as a matter of fact it was quite fluffy and delicious! Thanks for all your imput, Grace, it made my first attempt a perfect one. My DH and kids didn't even know it was tofu! A definate repeater here!

I made this on Sunday but didn't have it until last night. I don't think this is a good make ahead dessert. It tasted so much better on Sunday. I think when it sat in the fridge, something happened with the tofu - there was a little water in the bottom of my dish. It was also grainy after sitting overnight. I will make it again but eat it the same day.

I wonder why I had exactly the opposite experience with this recipe (not too good the first day, great the second and third days)? It's always interesting to see the different opinions/outcomes/perspectives on this BB. Keeps things interesting!
