View Full Version : How do you dispense your honey???

I buy wildflower honey from American Spoon Foods (www.spoon.com) - it's the best I've had so far. I've only enjoyed honey for the last few years - I couldn't stand it before, but I think it may be because I only had the store-bought brand before.
Their honey comes in a screw-top jar, and it's messy, as you can imagine, dipping your spoon in, drizzing it over the biscuit (or whatever I'm enjoying honey with). Measuring it is impossible.
I was at my sister-in-law's this weekend, and she had the most amazing honey dispenser I've ever seen. It's sort of a glass carafe. It's pointed at the bottom, and the bottom rests in a glass "cup". When you're ready to serve the honey, you put warm water in the glass cup to warm the honey. When you're ready to serve it, you pick up the carafe by the handle, and push a button, which releases the hole at the bottom of this carafe, and the honey comes out of this hole.
She said she got it years ago at Williams-Sonoma. I did a search on W-S, King Arthur Flour, cooking.com, and tavolo.com, and I can't find this silly thing.
Short of nabbing it out of her cupboard when she's not looking, any ideas for me??? (No, I don't want to buy the little plastic squeeze bottle - this carafe dispenser is way too pretty!!!)

Sandy,
amazon.com has the Norpro 1-cup honey dispenser for $13.99... I think it's what you describe. Good luck!

The reviews of the Norpro gadget on Amazon were not very favorable so I took a look at Sur La Table. Sure enough, they have just what you described and it has stainless steel top and dispenser (the complaints on Amazon were that it was plastic top and dispenser). Here's the link www.surlatable.com (http://www.surlatable.com)
Now that I check it out again it's pretty pricey ($36.95 compared to the one on Amazon.com that was 13.99).

I saw what I think you described at WSonoma just at Christmas (both my mother and sister keep bees so I am always on the look out for bee related things). However the web addresses already given may be easier way to get it. My mother prefers the glass syrup dispenser with metal top and tab that pulls back for pouring (OK that makes no sense).
Sorry to be so obtuse -- my students are taking state standardized tests and all of the nonsense has turned my brain to mud.

Thanks gertdog & LGB - I just ordered the one from amazon.com. You're right - the reviews weren't favorable, but the photo doesn't show a plastic handle.
I guess when I receive it, I'll look it over. I can't imagine spending over $40.00 for this. I notice that surlatable doesn't show a name brand - what a hoot if it was the same one........

Wow! I think I found it!

It should show up as the last product on the bottom-right.
Let me know if this is it because it really sounds neat!

comabri - this is it, exactly. Now I'm wondering if I jumped the gun a little early by buying the inexpensive one at amazon.com.
It really is a neat item. Apparently it comes out of the dispenser a little slowly (so it might be cumbersome for measuring), but any recipe that I might use honey in rarely calls for over ½ cup.

I think I've seen something like you're describing recently.

I bet if you use the hot water trick before dispensing the honey would probably come out faster. I think the photo on Amazon doesn't look plastic because it has one of those metallic coatings. Who knows, maybe you got a deal!

Thanks for sharing this, and to everyone for finding it on the web! I am like a little kid-I get so excited about cool kitchen stuff like this. Now, I want one! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/biggrin.gif

Sounds like a nifty gadget, but I think DD would be most upset if I got rid of her plastic honey bear. I buy my honey in a big jug at Costco because I use a lot of it when I bake bread. Its just more cost effective that way.
...I don't dispense my honey at all. I keep him all to myself!

....errr.........
For those of you interested in what this honey dispenser looks like, and since I've finally learned how to post graphics, here it is:
Well I posted the graphic last night but deleted it this morning cause it took too darn long to refresh the page. Sorry.

I sent amazon.com a note asking if theirs had a plastic top and handle, and this is their response:
Thanks for writing to us at Amazon.com.
I've checked our website and found
that "Norpro 1-Cup Honey Dispenser"
comes in three parts: a stainless-steel
lid, a glass honey container, and a glass
stand.
I hope this clarifies the matter. Please
don't hesitate to contact us if you have
any further questions, and thanks for
shopping at Amazon.com!
soooooo, I'm gonna cover all bases - order it from Orvis, order it from Amazon, and return either the more expensive one or the cheaply made one. I suspect they're one and the same.......
And here's what it looks like <hoping this works.....>

I have a nifty, albeit low-tech, honey pot which works really well. It's pottery, holds about one and a half cups (that's a guess) of honey, and has a matching lid with a place for the handle of the honey "swirler" to stick out. The swirler is a wooden gizmo that's difficult to describe, but one twirls it in the honey to pick up that gorgeous sweet stuff, then you allow it to drizzle off onto whatever you're putting the honey on. The thing I really appreciate about this little pot is that if the honey gets a bit crystallized (as honey is wont to do), pot, lid, and swirler are all safe to put in the microwave so the honey can be returned to its original state. Many places that deal in handmade pottery have honey pots like this. I also enjoy the fact that it's rather elemental, much like honey itself.

Help! I just read what I posted. How do I remove the apostrophe from that its in the third line from the bottom of my post? I'm sure several of my former teachers are spinning in their graves right now!

Giggling here, reminded of the "quirks/phobias" thread a few weeks back.

Okay folks, the results are in. The winner - the honey dispenser from Orvis ($35.99). The complaints on the amazon.com web site about theirs ($14.99) are true. The lid mechanism may not be plastic, but it's cheap and difficult to maneuver.
The price differential is wide, but the variance in the two is equally as wide.
So, there ya have it. Consumer Reports, eat your heart out..... http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/biggrin.gif

Wow... good to know that sometimes paying more really does get you a better product! Sorry to have misdirected you to the one at Amazon, Sandy!

Hey Stephanie - no sorries!!! I really expected the amazon one to be fine, and the Orvis one to be totally overpriced and the same exact thing. It's unlike me to do research on such a small purchase, but, I'm glad I did.
I really appreciated your input!
Thanks Sandy for posting this thread. I use honey almost daily on my daughters sandwiches and found a dispenser locally. It works great even it does have a plastic lid. The stopper on the bottom is more nylon. Anyway...I figured I'd try it and see if I really liked it before I invested in the more expensive model. Sure enough it works really well, especially with warm water underneath. I am able to spread the honey over the whole piece of bread with having to use a knife! I think I will probably look for a nicer one when this wears out. It would work good for syrup too. Thanks for the research!
oops...hit the submit button twice!
