What to wear to the country club birthday party tonight?

DH's step-mother is being surprised with a birthday party at a very nice country club tonight, 78th birthday party. What do I wear? Any suggestions would be appreciated. Obviously, we don't belong to the country club, so I have no clue. TIA.

The country clubs affairs that I have been to have all been very nice attire. Maybe a nice pair of dressy black pants, heels, and a dressy sleeveless-type shirt and a wrap? Long beaded necklaces are in now and hanging earrings too...?

or you can go towards the little black dress route... swoop your hair up if its long...nice earrings, etc...

I believe attire for a country club in the evening would be cocktail. Is there anyone you can call to find out what the attire is? Maybe a SIL?

Barring that, I would agree with what cooknmom said. I think I'd personally lean toward a dress, because someone 78 grew up in an age where a nice occassion without question called for a dress.

I went with a black dress with a beaded top. It was perfect. When we walked into the club, we were directed to the top floor where a wedding was taking place. We had to excuse ourselves and walk back down to the birthday dinner.Thanks so much for your recommendations, I was happy to have the black dress in my closet without having to go shopping~
