View Full Version : Cheddar Cheese sauce mix (dry)
I've been looking at some mix in a jar recipes for possible holiday gifts (many teachers, especially), and I found a couple of soup recipes that I thought the teachers might like as quick dinner ideas. One was a potato cheddar that sounded good. It called for a packet of dry cheddar cheese sauce mix as one of the layers. That's not something I would usually buy. Anyone familiar with one other than the one that comes in the mac & cheese package? You don't have to claim to have personally used it or risk expulsion, I promise. ;)

I bought some powdered cheese from Penzey's. That was over 12 years ago
Sadly, it is still sitting in my cupboard, unused. I should probably toss it, huh :p
I had intentions of making cheese popcorn, but never think about it when I actually make the popcorn
I think they still sell it...would that work?

I don't know, but we have a store here and I could call and ask them next week (closed now).

I've bought it from KA so I could make slightly healthier mac'n'cheese (using WW pasta)---it was fine, nice actually, because I could mkae a little more sauce and throw in some veggies as well.

Penzeys.com has a section called Cheese seasonings, and my favorite place where I buy my spices is called SavorySpiceShop.com. They have cheese blends.
Don't know if you can find powdered cheese that you need. Good luck. Sure would like to know if you find it.
Thanks. I was thinking that Knorr or someone would make a mix that they sell in packets. I looked at one store yesterday, but didn't find anything. I'm going to look at a couple of others. Potato Cheddar just sounds like a yummy soup mix to have -- if I can find the cheese sauce and it tastes good. There was also a green and yellow split pea one and a pilaf. Guess I'd better take advantage of the cool evenings we're supposed to have this week and try making some sample soups.
Bumping after looking at another store with no luck. I just went to Penzey's but their product might be better than a packet of whatsit. Maybe it's worth a trip and figuring out how much "a packet" should be. Still curious if anyone knows of a packet mix -- if only to find out how much that would be.
(had this on the brain and made potato soup last night -- not a jar mix but the old-fashioned way -- sure hit the spot!)

Yes, there are cheese sauce mixes and they are different from cheese flavorings and seasonings. Look in the rack where they have the packets of gravy mix, swiss steak mix, hollandaise mix, etc. I am pretty sure Knorr has one, but if not, McCormick or someone else will.
Update: Yes, Knorr has a 4-cheese sauce but not a cheddar sauce: http://www.us.knorr.com/products.asp?brand=1&group=5&pid=9&nav=11

Could "a packet" mean the packet from a package of mac & cheese? (or could that work?)
I have a horrible habit now (thanks to someone on this board who suggested it) of stealing the cheese pack from the mac & cheese to use on popcorn :o

Beth! You came all the way to Penzey's and didn't stop at my house (all of 6 blocks away!)

We were on a mission to pick up a supposedly repaired carpet cleaner (still has problems and will be returned), look at some cabinets (place closed early) and stopped by Penzey's to get a few things -- with DH and 2 crabby boys in tow. I wouldn't subject a friend to that! :D Can't believe you are only 6 blocks from there! I am likely to make another trip for holiday baking and gifts --we'll have to plan better.
I found Knorr pesto, alfredo and others, but nothing in a cheese. It may be Kraft mac & cheese packets if I am going to be able to do this one. I have 2 more stores I can check at -- and ask my neighbor if Central Market carries anything.

Beth -- we really should do a lunch & Penzey's trip. Pony/Michelle lives just a couple of blocks away from me. I just know its tough juggling family and making the trek from the hinterlands!
I know you need it to be a Saturday, so we'll just have to make a point of finding a spot in the schedule when I don't have the guys. Actually, they may all 3 be camping on the same weekend next month (19th???). This might work....

I was looking thru my sauce mixes, and guess what I found??I found a package of KNORR Creamy Cheddar Sauce mix. Where I live, we only have these 3 major stores, Albertsons, Korgers, Brookshires. I don't know where I bought it,but, I do have it written down that Brookshires has a 4 cheese sauce mix. Would be glad to send you this one I have or go to www.us.knorr.com, maybe you can order on ne. Hope this helps a little.

Beth - in Detroit there is Rafal Spice Company (http://www.rafalspicecompany.com) and they sell what you are looking for. Do a product search for "cheese" and you should find it. Call them to make sure, but I know I've seen it there. :)
Thanks for the added suggestions. I am going to look a little more here (I'd like to try one before deciding whether to make a bunch of them, and ordering doesn't seem to make sense unless I'm doing a number of them). I have found that to get certain things, I occassionally have to make special trips to each of the 3 HEB stores, a Randalls, Kroger, SuperTarget and even Walmart. I'm thinking this might be one of those things.
