DH and I are going to a surprsie 40th for a male friend. He is single and no kids. Does anyone have any ideas on what to get him? I was going to go the joke route then changed my mind and thought I would ask you guys for some ideas. TIA!

I think a gift certificate is the best way to go. Maybe to his favorite restaurant, clothing store, hobby or book store for example. Or - how about a magazine subscription for fishing, golf, etc.
I'm not a big fan of gift certificates, I find them a little "un" personal. However, sometimes it's the best way to do.
What do you know about the guy? Hobbies, interests, etc?
Tickets for a concert, ball game, other event?
Gadgets? Does he cook? A cool wine opener or new knife?
Nice glasses for cocktails and a bottle of his fave liquor?
Just a few ideas!
Enjoy.

It really depends on what his tastes are. Would a nice cognac and cigars be up his alley?

I think that cost has to be considered.....how much did you plan on spending?
While tickets to an event or show is a nice idea, they (and I'd imagine you'd have to give him two as it's no fun to go alone) could be very costly. Does he wear a suit to work every day? Maybe a tie? Does he sit at a desk? Maybe a really nice pen or a paperweight, or something like that for his desk?

I was going to say my phone number and then I realized you lived in MA :D
On a more serious note:
a subscription to a favorite magazine
make a movie basket with a movie he would like, popcorn, beverage of choice (beer, wine, soda), gift card to Blockbuster

Must just be me. I wouldn't buy a "serious" gift for a 40th birthday. Something fairly inexpensive and with some kind of over-the-hill item would be most appropriate. Or just a card referencing the milestone would be good. It's likely he is going to be embarrassed enough without having to open a bunch of serious gifts

And let me tell you, you may want to move because he is a barrel of fun! We went to his costume party sat. and he was dressed as Willy Wonka! He was a riot.
I love all the ideas, but unfortunately some won't work. He doesn't dress up for work, doesn't smoke, only drinks beer, and besides working for his dad's trucking company (beer), he owns a movie theater that you can eat and drink at.
I do now have an idea from this post. We are all parrotheads! Jimmy Buffett's DVD/CD from Fenway Park came out. That is a good possibility.
I was also thinking of getting him some sleep pants with cartoons on them and saying something about never getting too old to act like a kid.
Thanks for all the wonderful ideas! I was drawing a huge blank.

Hmm, well how about a ticket to San Francisco with a personal tour guide (Tyra of course). :D Can't expect her to move without having even met the man.
sounds like you've come up with good ideas. There's also things like fruit gifts from Harry & David's (monthly club) or that type of thing.

Since you mentioned he likes beer, there's a very popular, upscale beer called (I believe) Chimay. It's pretty expensive but likely to be a real treat!

If he likes beer, how about a set of beer mugs? Unless, of course, he drinks straight out of the bottle :(
