This month's issue had a recipe for cookies-and-cream ice cream. My DH loves this flavor, but neither of us can stand Cool Whip. Does anyone have a recipe for C&C or plain vanilla that is low-fat? Thanks.

I'm going to piggy-back on Jessica's request because we really enjoyed the Cookies and Cream recipe, but I too would prefer not to make it with Cool Whip. It there a way to make homemade CoolWhip that wouldn't be so artificial? or something that would work well as a substitute?

Jessica - if you do a search I know you'll find all sorts of threads on ice-cream including some with great links to web sites with tons of recipes. You can play around by subbing lower fat milk for the cream that's called for in a basic vanilla recipe.

If anyone knows of a good tofu-based base ice cream recipe (that doesn't use the cool whip) please let me know. I really liked the smoothness of the cookies and cream recipe!

I'm not sure of it's taste, but is "Dream Whip" still around?? I guess you could always not go light and use real whipped cream?? Hey, every so often we need full fat!

I know Dream Whip is still around - I used some the other day! I much prefer it to Cool Whip anyway, but it's a bit more work since you have to whip it yourself. I don't think it has petroleum in it, but it's still full of chemicals. It's very low fat if you use skim milk (they recommend 2%, but I always use skim and it works fine).
