There are some in NY state. I have visited them only when in the area.
When DH and I lived in Dallas we had two friends from Rochester, NY and they would talk about "the Wegmens" often. They would get excited when talking about it, yet sad at the same time because there wasn't one in the Dallas area. I was so intrigued when listening to them because I LOVE grocery shopping (and grocery stores). You'd think that any store that could inspire such memories would be nation wide.
Sad as it sounds "going to a Wegman's" (especially the one in Rochester) is on my list of "things to do before I die" (although it's not high on the list)

WEGMANS !!!!! I love Wegmans !! I used to live in Rochester and miss the stores terribly. The produce is fantastic and really cannot be beat, for the price.

I grew up in Buffalo and my first job during high school was at a Wegmans. I also lived in Rochester- home of Wegmans- for a few years. Like JLS, I miss Wegmans so much (is that sad or what?). Nothing seems to compare. Whenever I head back to visit my parents, my trip is not complete without a stock-up trip to Wegmans! They have perhaps the best store brand I've ever tried, especially their Hot Ginger Ale. There was a store that opened in Canandaigua (south of Rochester) that had an amazing sit-down/take-out cafe with pizza, sandwiches, Thai & Chinese, salads, etc. We would actually go to Wegmans just for lunch!

My husband is from Rochester so we went to Wegman's everytime we were there. I haven't found a grocery store as good here in Western Massachusetts.
They made the best bread!!

Yup, I am familiar with it. I liked the freshness and selection, BUT ... make sure you get a Shoppers Card to take advantage of any sales! Otherwise it is a bit pricey.
Oh, yeah, the peanut butter creme donuts rock. Oops, perhaps that comment is not quite appropriate for this health-conscious board. Nah, everything in moderation ...

Worked at Wegmans in Princeton,NJ. When my friends and I first visited it we dubbed it the Disney land of Grocery stores. I don't know about all Wegmans, but ours has this great toy train that runs above the heads of the customers at the back of the store! Loved it, but learned that I am not cut to work in a commercial bakery. (early morning hours just don't work for this night owl). Food is excellet, especially some of they're own brand stuff. Try the Patisserie stuff, I personally love the Nicolettes.

SusanL,
Not one in Bethlehem yet...we're waiting. It's usually our Friday afternoon "date"...lunch at Wegman's, then a few hours to go up and down ALL the aisles...usually do a "stock-up" trip to buy Red Hot Lites, Gourmet Light Cream Cheese, Sun-dried Tomatoe paste, and LOTS of cheese...they actually have the "drunken goat cheese" mentioned on another post, which will be on my list this week...I also belong to their mailing list, and get the grocery ad on-line every week...I can put in what I want and it gives a terrific print-out, complete with what aisle to find what you're looking for!

I am a Rochester resident and am, in fact, going to Wegman's today. I love the store, but have a couple of gripes. First, the prepared food, though delicious, is very expensive. Also, they are making their new, upscale stores really big so it seems to take ages to shop there. BUT ... in some of the new stores, they will babysit your kids for free while you shop. http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif A real plus for me! They even have Playstation, which we don't have, so my son begs me to take me there.
My other gripe is that I saw Pirate's Booty there ONCE and haven't seen it since... http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif
Have fun with your new store in NJ!

I live in Ithaca NY and we have a great Wegmans. My parents visited from CA a year ago and we ran in to get some corn to grill, and ended up staying an hour because my dad was so fascinated by the store and had to explore every corner (he was in the food business pre-retirement). I think it was the highlight of his trip!
My very favorite thing is the Pasta Bar, where they'll make you a small order of pasta, however you want it, for $3.99. You can choose from all kinds of veggies and meats, plus sauces (roasted red pepper pesto is awesome, but I also like marinara with a tiny dollop of alfredo to make it creamy). They'll add garlic, herbs and spices, wine, etc. if you request it. We eat pasta there at least once a week... can you tell I love it?
I am going to be so sad when I leave Ithaca and can't go to Wegmans anymore!

There is a Wegman's in Erie, PA (maybe even TWO of them, I think I heard??!!!) - which is about 90 minutes away from me. But whenever we plan a trip or otherwise find ourselves in Erie, Wegman's is ALWAYS on the "must stop" list! That's where I found the cane syrup, chipotles in adobo sauce, chili paste, sushi rice, etc. It's a good place for me to look when I can't find something locally - they usually have it! It is a GREAT store, to be sure, but the general prices seem HIGH!
Lynn B, my in-laws are in Erie and I go to Wegmans each time we visit. At Easter, I was looking for chipoltes in adobo sauce and couldn't find them. I was looking in the Mexican food section. Do you remember where you found them? Thanks!

Are all of the NJ "Weggies" in South Jersey? Loved the chain when I was an undergraduate in the Syracuse area. I'm hoping they will come to North Jersey. ShopRite isn't my favorite.

jd,
No, I don't remember which section - but I'm assuming it was the Mexican section?!! I do seem to vaguely remember that the little buggers were hard to find! It's been a while ago, because our local Wal-Mart is now carrying them (for the low low price of ONLY 77 cents a can! HONEST!!! Whatta deal!) Anyway - if you can't find them at Wegman's -check the Wal-Mart in Erie!
Lynn
PS Where in Erie do they live?! Have you ever come "south" to Franklin?!

JanetB- how can you say Shop Rite isn't your favorite supermarket? Isn't that sacrilege in the NJ/NY metro area? http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/wink.gif As mentioned above, I hail from Wegmans territory and living in Orange Co., NY has been less than thrilling as far as supermarkets go. Recently, however, we've been experiencing supermarket oversaturation- Price Chopper, Stop & Shop and Hannaford (which is my new favorite behind Wegmans) have all moved in and the competition is FIERCE! (And Super WalMart is coming soon.)
Thanks, Lynn B! I'll check Walmart next time I am in Erie as well. My in-laws are near the airport, which I think is refered to as West Lake, and is near the new Wegmans - Walmart stores. I'm not familiar with Franklin - which way out of Erie? We have an annual summer road trip where we cross from Canada at Buffalo, turn left at Erie, pass Pittsburg and make our way to Bristol TN for stock car racing. We must pass somewhere in the vicinity since there aren't many directions you can go from Erie and still be in PA!!

I definately am from Shoprite territory; that's been my main supermaret from growing up in New York suburbs (Rockland) all the way down through central New Jersey. I like Shoprite but have never liked their produce. My younger brother now lives in Kingston and really likes Hannaford. I did very briefly experience Wegman's as a college studentin Binghamton, but that was 10 years ago and this new one (in Manalapan, NJ) is extremely different (much more upscale w/ a lot of "trendy" and organic and specialty foods).

jd,
Franklin is pretty much straight south of Erie, about half way between Erie & Pittsburgh. From Erie, you could take I-79 S to Meadville, then 322W right into Franklin... OR Rt 8 south all the way.
You probably get real close to me on your road trip. Smile and honk on your way through! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif
