Just a heads up that "Paula's Southern Thanksgiving" is on FoodTV tonight. She'll be making things like fried creamed corn, Turducken, and bacon-wrapped breadsticks among other cholesterol-raising dishes. ;)

On a humorous side note, I noticed a Sandra Lee recipe for Thanksgiving gravy. I couldn't even bring myself to read the whole thing, once I saw that a can of chicken with rice soup is listed as one of the ingredients. .....

If she didn't want us to peek...she would have sent it as a pm :DVery true- I thought about it, but I know how many of us get a kick out of Paula. (And nightmares from Sandra).

And my mistake about Sandra's recipe - it's listed as a gravy recipe, but the link actually shows it's for her stuffing recipe. And while I'm in a vindictive mood today ;) here is her Wassail recipe from her Thanksgiving show:
2 cups light rum
1/2 cup dark rum
5 (25-ounce) bottles sparkling apple cider
1 (64-ounce) carton mango juice

In a punch bowl or pitcher large enough to blend 7 quarts, pour the rums, sparkling apple cider, and mango juice. Stir to blend liquids. With a ladle, pour wassail into individual goblets.

Now answer this fairly, y'all. (Having a Paula Moment here.)

I know how many of you love those Gooey Cakes.

Would you have made it if Sandra Lee, who the recipe might very well have come from, was the one who offered it up?

I'm not that big of a drinker, so yes it did look heavy on the rum (but I wasn't sure). I looked up Wassail and it just said a punch with liquor so the mango juice seemed okay to me.

I can't answer Bob's question. I've never made a gooey cake ;) But I do like to think I judge a recipe on its ingredients, not its creator :)

At the best party I ever threw, I made a punch of the same frozen lemonade, 6 oz., to one 12 oz. can of beer to 6 oz. of whiskey. It tasted like a whiskey sour, but it put twenty very happy people flat on their a**es. :D :D

I think I will make a ooey-gooey pumpkin butter cake this year. It just sounds good. I did watch it and liked her kitchen. Her soapstone countertops looked nice.
Too bad they didn't give a close up of the one oven but I think it was a garland (?) maybe. I know they made sure to show the wolf name.

Oh my y'all (but be sure to pronounce that y'owl). It's really all I can say after that extravaganza. Where do I begin?

*The stick of butter they poured over a DEEP FRIED TURKEY!!?? (not that there's anything wrong w/ df turkey but it surely doesn't need butter)
*or the appetizers that contain a days worth of fat and calories? Mini cheeseburgers wrapped in puff pastry and breadsticks wrapped in bacon, then rolled in parmesan cheese! yummers! not.
*The pure "gloppiness" of everything? gloppy oyster dressing, turducken glop, and those sweet potato balls? good lord
*All the kissing. And the finger licking!! And those sons need years of therapy.

The pumpkin pie did look nice. Not her recipe. But did she have to teach us how to stick a spoon in to get a taste of the pie without anyone noticing.

This almost tops her visit to the Krispy Kreme store.

Enjoy Bob! ;)

I happen to love Paula Deen, wish I could say the same about some of her recipes, I am a huge fan of her gooey pumpkin butter cake and will be making it for Thanksgiving. I did see the show last night and I was saddened to see that it looked like Jamie and Bobby have girlfriends :(
Her recipes are not that hard to lighten up, yes some you can't get around it!
But that pumpkin pie looked so good I just might have to make that next week and of course, stick a spoon in it to taste ;)
At first when I heard about Turducken I could not believe they could come up with something such as that, however I must admit I'm curious in seeing how it tastes!

I missed yesterday's discussion, and therefore missed the special last night. Lest all be lost, please note that I just put on 5 pouds while reading about this stuff! So, I googled turducken, found some sites, got over the nausea, and decided to set the alarm for 7:00 tomorrow morning to see this show! I do like Paula, but couldn't possibly eat any of her stuff. (Except the gorilla bread she made last year. I really want to try that!)

There ought to be laws, or at least local ordinances, regarding Turducken!

(And Sandra Lee scares me!)

Just for the record, I *think* that turducken could be good. I've seen it made with interesting stuffings and you would have to take the skin off the duck and the chicken. But I didn't like the look of last night's turducken. Or her fingers in it.

I enjoy watching Paula because she's so happy & loves what she's doing. But when I see her and others - Emeril, Wolfgang Puck, etc. licking their fingers and double dipping tasting spoons, I think that I don't want to eat at their restaurants. The sweet potato balls were too gross for me!

Betsy - I thought the recipe looked really good as she was making it. I love oyster dressing - and scalloped oysters with saltines. It's just that when it was mixed up it got all.... gloppy. I think it was too much mixing and all the eggs. do you use that many eggs? I usually just add one beaten egg to any dressing recipe but I guess I should keep an open mind. :)

Yep, we really do use that many eggs. When it bakes, it gets pretty firm. You can cut it into squares and serve it on a platter. (Which, okay, does sound pretty gross, but that's the way we've eaten it for generations, and we do like it. LOL)

OK, will I be the only one to admit that I think the sweet potato balls look good. :o I must say that I like my sweet potato dishes to be almost dessert like though. :D

Sweet Potato Balls

4 large sweet potatoes
2/3 cup packed brown sugar
2 tablespoons orange juice
1 teaspoon orange zest
1/2 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg
2 cups shredded coconut, sweetened
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1 large marshmallow per potato ball

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
Bake the potatoes until tender, then peel and mash them. Stir in the brown sugar, orange juice, zest and nutmeg. In a separate bowl, toss the coconut with the sugar and cinnamon. Press mashed potatoes around each marshmallow, creating a 2 to 3-inch diameter ball. Roll the balls in the coconut mixture. Bake for 15 to 20 minutes. Watch carefully for the last few minutes of cooking; the expanding marshmallows can cause the potato balls to burst open.

It was kept a secret for a while that Giada (correctly pronounced as Jah-Duh)DeLaurentis was married. Her husband's name is Todd. Actually, he's been in many of her shows at the end when she's serving her guests. Giada's buzz word is "creamy"....Paula's is "ya'll". It's all good!!!

I can't speak to hers, but I've had turducken. The one we had was a little too Cajun-ized for our New England palates :-) but tasted just fine otherwise. I do think it's a funny idea, but can be done well.

I am also guilty of double-dipping tasting spoons. :o

I Tivoed the show last night and just watched it. I feel really sick now. Is there anything Paula doesn't add sugar, butter and bacon grease to? ;)

The turducken might be good but, yuck. Just the thought of it and watching her put it together. Ick. I've heard of turduckens before but, I never imagined that all of the bones were removed first before assembling. I always thought of the duck being stuffed inside of the turkey, and the chicken stuffed inside the duck, like you would put stuffing inside the turkey if you were making a regular turkey. I always wondered how they'd all fit.

I had to laugh when Paula asked, "can you believe these are vegetables?" after making the sweet potato balls. Umm, I'd hardly call them vegetables anymore - not after loading them with brown sugar, white sugar, sweetened coconut and marshmallows.

Also, has anyone else noticed that she nearly has an, umm, orgasm after she tastes the food? After watching her show, I don't know if I should want to try the recipes or feel dirty. :p :D

I started watching Paula last night, but it was just a bit too sweet all the way around. She is nice and perky and positive and family oriented, and that's all good, but yeah, the butter on the turkey was a bit much. And the whole turducken thing...first the three birds (talk about sheery gluttony) then the "get your hubby in the kitchen...kissy kissy...I couldn't do this without you, huhnee..."

I feel super mean, but she was just too much of everything for me last night. Perhaps she felt she had to be louder and sweeter and all for the special. I generally like watching her shows, although I probably wouldn't make many of her recipes. I like to stay ignorant about my dessert ingredients when that much butter is involved!

I agree on the high-fat hors d'oeuvres. Was there a vegetable in their whole meal that wasn't coated in egg or butter?

I have a friend who went to Savannah recently and had a disappointing experience at their restaurant. I don't want to set anyone off, upset anyone, or gross you out, but he had the fried cornbread and the result? Well I'll let him tell it:

The food in Savannah is excellent, though a tad heavy. Several people had told us we just had to go visit this restaurant called The Lady & Sons, which features recipes by Food Network queen Paula Deen. Deen owns the place with her sons, hence the name. My wife pooh-poohed it but I could tell she wanted to go, so we did. I’ve never felt more like a tourist.

We went early to put in our name (always a bad sign), then returned at our appointed time to find more than a hundred people lining both sides of Congress Street. A guy came out of the restaurant banging a pan and yelling, "Come and get it."

Boy, did I ever get it. If you want a bowel lube, be sure to eat one of the fried cornbread patties and an order of fried lobster. Tasty, but you get the picture.

I had to LOL when I caught part of her show today. She was making a friend's spaghetti sauce recipe. When she put some spaghetti noodles on her plate for a taste test, she said something about how she doesn't eat spaghetti w/out butter on the noodles and she proceeded to to put about 2 or 3 TBS of butter on just a small mound of noodles. :p

I do love to watch her, though. She's so over the top sometimes that it gives me a good chuckle. Having said that, I looooove her Not Yo Mama's Banana Pudding!

I watched the show last night and was just salivating the whole time...expecially the oyster stuffing. I love my stuffing to be gooey and moist, unlike Alton Brown who says it should be fluffy (I watched his show after Paula's). I've always had gooey stuffing so I never thought it could be made any different. Her sweet potato balls were a little over the top, but I wouldn't pass them up if they were on my table, that's for sure :)

1. It's a disgusting habit that passes the cook's germs, whether they be family or not.
2. The food she cooks is not for her family. Most of the food from the foodtv shows goes to the crews and assistants.
