View Full Version : Poll: What weird food combinations do people like?

I was reading the phobias thread earlier and many people had mentioned not liking their food to touch on their plates. That's how I've discovered some great food combos!

An early discovery, and something I know a lot of people like, was when my maple syrup touched my scrambled eggs on my breakfast plate. For years I couldn't eat scrambled eggs without syrup.

Onion or garlic bagels with strawberry jam. It just seemed like a lot of times my plain or fruity bagels tasted like onion or garlic. I think they were "touching" right after baking (or baked in close proximity). Anyway, I found myself wishing for those bites of bagel with strawberry jam where there was that underlying flavor of onion or garlic. I'm thinking this actually isn't such a weird combo, either, since people at the local bagel shops never even blink an eye when I ask for the onion bagel with strawberry jam now.

This one is REALLY weird, I know: Tuna noodle salad (the mayo kind) with vanilla pudding on it. (I'm sure I've just pushed some of you over the edge! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/wink.gif ) This one was borne of a jostled takeout lunch from a salad bar. My pudding dumped on my (favorite!) tuna noodle salad. Couldn't let it go to waste so I just HAD to try it. Yum! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/biggrin.gif

I am one of those people that can't stand to have their food touching each other. I'm not a big breakfast fan, but DH is. I usually try to sneak a bite of bacon or eggs off his plate, but they're always covered in syrup from his pancakes or French toast. Ewwww!

One strange food combo I have dates back to my childhood. I have no idea where it came from, but I used to scoop out the insides of my plain baked potato and mix it with tuna salad (tuna, Miracle Whip, and diced apples). I attribute it to my dad being creative in using up leftovers. I haven't had it in years, and every now and then, I get a little curious as to whether I would still like it now.

A lot of these involve foods I don't regularly eat now, but ever since I was a kid I love to dip my french fries in my chocolate milkshake. I don't have any need for ketchup when I've got those two together! I get strange looks, but what the heck? I also always took Peanut Butter and Sugar sandwiches to school. Didn't like the ooziness of the jelly, and sugar gave it that extra 'crunch'! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/biggrin.gif

I always put maple syrup on my plate when we have veggie breakfast sausage, just to 'dip' my sausage bites into. Even if we're not having pancakes or french toast, it's just one of those things that came as a result of food touching when I was growing up, and I found I liked it that way! And Julie?? My husband has always loved Cream Cheese and Olive sandwiches on wheat bread! He even likes the green ones with the pimentos in them! Eeewww! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/biggrin.gif

I realize this will be gross to some people, but I got this habbit from my dad! When ever I eat chicken fried steak(which is not that often-but a treat) I have to have both cream gravy and ketchup on top! It is very messy-but soo yummy!

One from childhood that I still love: taking a bite of a peanut butter and jam sandwich, followed by a spoonful of tomato soup- chew, slurp, swallow together (Simultaneous viewing of an episode of Mr. Rogers's Neighborhood is recommended, but not required) http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif

I just remembered the Gross Out of my childhood. It wasn't me, but my best friend: her favorite snack, and I'm not lying, was to take a big spoonful of shortening (Butter Flavor Crisco was her brand of choice) and roll it around in sugar, and eat it off the spoon. http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/eek.gif She used to do it at slumber parties and gross everyone out. I'd hate to see her arteries now!!

I too enjoy a breakfast sausage with syrup! Here's a good one: my husband's roommate in college used to eat pasta noodles with applesauce on top! And my brother when growing up used to eat white bread with Henri's french dressing on it. Also, he'd eat a HUGE bowl of ice-cream with powdered sugar on top!

Jewel...

I LOVED dipping my french fries in my chocolate shake as a kid! MMMMMMMMMM!
I also like my (soy) sausages with maple syrup.
My sister used to slather her pancakes with peanut butter and then cover them with a lake of maple syrup.

When I was little, my Grandma talked me into trying a peanut butter and pickle sandwich. She'd put a light layer of peanut butter on two slices of bread and add sliced dill pickles and a little raw onion. Yum! Peanut butter really does go with everything.
Another thing I really like that I've never heard of anyone else eating is pickles and french fries--bite of pickle, bite of french fry. Similar to vinegar on fries, but crunchier.
Mmmm, now I have a pickle craving.

I also used to love (used to because I haven't had this in years) McDonald's chocolate shake and french fries. I didn't dip, just ate them together. Yum!

I have never thought syrup on breakfast sausage was weird! I love to eat a bite of pancake/french toast with sausage and syrup all at the same time! Been a long time since I had that, too. http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/frown.gif

I don't really have any weird combos I can think of right now. If I am having chicken fingers with honey mustard sauce, I dip my fries in the sauce instead of using ketchup. Same thing for McDonald's nuggets and fries with sweet and sour sauce. But that doesn't seem weird to me. Guess I am a boring eater! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif

Ooo. How about steak dipped in ranch dressing? Yum!

BlueMoose~ I am a devoted peanut butter and syrup gal. I have to eat waffles, pancakes and French Toast that way. Yummy! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif That's how I grew up eating it, so I never really thought it was strange. I've even managed to convert my DH and a few friends.

What about apples and cheese? I know some people at my work think it's a weird combo, but I enjoy it.

I like toasted onion bagels with peanut butter.

Also, when I was a kid, my mom would give us something she called a "soda" for a treat. It was milk mixed with a little Coke. I still like the taste, although I rarely drink pop.

I remember my brothers and I slathering flour tortillas with peanut butter and then mashing potatoe chips over that, roll and munch. That is one culinary delight I have not given to my kids yet, but I may just do that for snack tonight just to see the results..

I don't do this anymore, I swear, but when I was younger, I'd say from about 8 until 12 or so, we would go to this buffet after church on Sundays. I filled my plate with stuffing, green beans, lima beans, macaroni and cheese and mixed it all together. The only reason my parents didn't mind is because I wasn't playing with my food -- I loved it that way, and ate every last bite. Ewwwww....how could I do that??? I don't think I'd touch that food by itself with a ten-foot-pole now!

Gosh -- My dad got me eating peanut butter and pickle sandwiches but that was always with sleced SWEET gerkins not dill pickles.
I like my macaroni and cheese (has to be baked and crusty) with vinigrette or italian dressing

I don't know how weird this is, but my sister and I both like to eat grilled cheese sandwiches with ketchup to dip in. Got that from our dad. We used to know someone that ate theirs with grape jelly! Also, I LOVE tortilla chips dipped in ranch dressing--yummy!

Brendat4, I eat grilled cheese sandwiches with jelly! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/wink.gif I got that from dad. He also passed on popcorn and milk to me. You make the popcorn in the regular way and eat it like cereal with milk.

I love to dip almost anything in ranch dressing, french fries, a black bean burger, etc.

My grandma passed on lettuce sandwiches to me. I haven't done this in years but my favorite way to have them was with white bread (which I don't eat anymore) iceberg lettuce with mayo. I've also had miracle whip and peanut butter sandwiches, also due to my dad.

My dad has all these different ways of eating because of his dad. One of the last times I saw my Gramps he told me that he bet if he made a hersheys sandwich that it would get eaten. I said okay. So, he gets a hersheys chocolate bar and breaks it up a bit, butters two pieces of bread and grills it like a grilled cheese. He then cut it up into four pieces. I did have some of it and it wasn't bad. He then finished it up and said, "see, I told it would all get eaten". Too funny!

This is so fun!

I, too, am a chocolate shake french fry dipper. In fact, I think practically my whole junior high class was (that's where it originated for me).

Jessica - Didn't LaVerne & Shirley drink Pepsi & milk?

JillC - I had seen a thread on another BB about PB & pickle sandwiches a few weeks ago and just HAD to try it. Yum!

Jewel - Now I'm going to have to go home tonight and try a PB & sugar sandwich. I'm going to try it with Sugar in the Raw, that should give it some extra crunch!

I've thought of another weird one for me...ranch on pizza. I also like ranch on tacos but I don't think that's very weird.

Ranch on pizza was a pretty standard combo when I was in college. I think for us, it started with Double Dave's pepperoni rolls dipped in ranch dressing -- yummmmmy!

When I go to the movies, I have to have popcorn and Junior Mints. Your kind of glue as many pieces of popcorn to a mint as you can and eat them together. If I can't get both, I don't bother with either. Yum.

In highschool, we used to love peanut butter and jelly sandwiches with cool ranch doritos (no other flavor will do http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/wink.gif) in the middle of the sandwich. Yummy!!!

I used to also eat grilled cheese with sweet pickles in the middle. I think it is the same salt & sweet thing as the PB & pickles.

Thanks for the fun post to read! Lunchtime is much better now.

I kid you not, but in grade school, we had a teacher who ate toothpaste sandwiches!!!! I will never forget being in the 7th grade and laughing hysterically as we watched him do this. He used either Crest or Colgate. Now, he only did this once, so I don't know if it was done as a gag, or if this was his daily lunch. LOL.

As for me, I don't think I have any weird food combos that I eat, but I could write a novel about my DH (honey on apple pie and turkey or ham on a cinnamon raisin bagel - yuck!! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/frown.gif are just two examples).

This is something I ate in high school - fried burritos dipped in tarter sauce! God, the things that I used to be able to eat and not gain a pound.

I don't think that I eat anything weird now but I'm sure that my DH would beg to differ. I do love cream cheese and jelly sandwiches on whole wheat though and I have turned my two year old on to them also. I know DH thinks we are both strange.

Ok, I'll bite http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/biggrin.gif
I don't really think these are all THAT weird but then that's because I liked them. Most are not on my regular eating schedule these days.
Scrambled eggs and cream cheese on toast. (on occasion now) (just after Thanksgiving and Christmas this gets the added bonus of leftover homeade cranberry relish)
Actually the cranberry relish gets put on anything edible or that moves near me for that matter. (only 2x a year--not too bad)
Nutella, PB, bananas and maple syrup on pancakes--all but a faint memory since I'm fighting the pounds now http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/frown.gif
I love apples and cheese--I don't think this is weird at all. In fact apples and cheese help clean your teeth after a meal. http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif
Dipping Frito Lays in Mayonnaise
A big bowl of Cafe Latte and dipping hard crusty bread in it.
Dipping hard crusty bread in a robust red Italian wine.
Lays regular potato chips on hot dogs along with the regular fixings of ketchup, mustard, chopped dill pickles and onions..
Ok, I have to stop...my stomach is actually starting to turn...

How about this...I love to dip my pizza (especially the crust) in blue cheese. It is soooo good. Used to have it alot but tend to stay away from Blue Cheese now as I find the "healthier" versions just don't compare and I'd rather splurge on the good stuff once in a while! I too love Miracle Whip and lettuce sandwiches on toast. One other is peas, tuna, lettuce, miracle whip and dill...YUMMM!!

I have always loved milk and pepsi! (I of course had to try this as a kid watching Laverne and Shirley!)

Also I like to dip my tortilla chips in my margarita

I worked at Wendy's in high school and we would try mixing everything--my favorite was Dr. Pepper and frosty--YUM!

Another vote for peanut butter and miracle whip sandwiches! I used to eat them ALL the time as a kid and haven't had one in years and years. I remember being in school and lying to my friends, telling them that it was marshmallow creme instead of miracle whip, because I was afraid they'd think I was just too weird!

LGBurns

The only thing I can think of is my post-Thanksgiving sandwich: turkey, cranberry sauce, green beans, mashed rutabaga, mashed potatoes, stuffing, gravy on toast and heated. I've always liked to mix all the food at Thanksgiving together on the plate. Somewhat on the same subject, I had a friend who took her pizza apart to eat it--she liked all the ingredients but not together. First she'd eat the toppings, then the cheese, then the crust with the sauce. What's the point!?

JHolcomb
05-09-2001, 08:03 PM
Hey LGBurns I do that with my pizza too. I bite off the tip first, then eat the back part of the crust, then scrape off the toppings, reserving them for last while I eat the rest of the crust. I only do this in the privacy of my own home, mind you. I also must quarter my hamburger before I eat it. Eccentric, yes, I know. I don't think there are any weird food combos I like though. Oh, I lie. This is gross-I love to suck on pretzel sticks until they are soft and then take a swallow of grape juice. Yum. And few things beat the combo of Goldfish and orange juice eaten together.Crackers, not real Goldfish. I'm not THAT eccentric.

I'll preface this by saying I no longer eat this... When I was little, I used to make little sandwiches out of graham crackers (1 whole sheet, broken in half), liversausage and gherkin pickles! Just the thought sends shivers down my spine.

Everyone here thinks I'm whacko because I dip my french fries in mayonnaise (low-fat!). I don't like ketchup on my fries, so it's either mayo or gravy.

This is hilarious.

I too used to eat peanut butter and dill pickle sandwiches. I still eat cornbread dressing/stuffing sandwiches. Cold, leftover cornbread dressing from Thanksgiving dinner on bread with either mayo or cranberry sauce. Got this from my mom. I also used to eat bean sandwiches - leftover brown beans (i.e., Ham Hock 'N Beans as my mother would call it) or canned pork and beans on bread with mayo. I learned this from a friend whose mother used to pack bean sandwiches in their lunch because they were so poor.

I too like to dip breakfast sausage in pancake syrup. I also love to drink milk with popcorn, potato chips, chili, pizza and Cheetos -- although I don't pour the milk over these; I just love to drink milk with them. Maybe I just love milk.

I had a friend in high school whose mother made "chocolate gravy" served on biscuits - basically hot chocolate pudding served over biscuits. I tasted it and was not fond of it even though I love chocolate and I love biscuits.

I had another friend in high school that mixed scrambled eggs with grape jelly. I never could bring myself to even taste it because it makes the eggs a yucky gray color.

I happen to like my french fries dipped in tartar sauce, mayo is okay too but I like tartar sauce for it's zip.

But the very weirdest grossest combo has to belong to my brother in law - he likes to eat his spaghetti WITH cranberry sauce. I think it came from the fact that he was part of a LARGE family - 14 kids! And his Mom had to make things stretch to feed the family. But to this day when he eats spaghetti he wants cranberry sauce to go with!
