I like to give gifts that are not "objects", but are more disposable. I am thinking about a subscription to a health newletter. The Real Simple magazine had a review of a few of them a while back. Any comments on:

Harvard Women's (or Men's) Health Watch
Tufts Univ. Health and Nutrition
After 50; Johns Hopkins
Nutrition Action (CSPI)

I love getting the free issue of publications and then not subscribing :p , but I liked the CSPI newsletter so much I subscribed.

I am also satisfied with the Center for Science in the Public Interest's Nutrition Action. I avoided it for a long time because the Center is one of Ralph Nader's brainchildren and I assumed it was extremist. It is kind of preachy and the organization likes to sue, but the publication is current and extremely well researched.

I also like Consumer Reports On Health. Again, well researched and a good variety of topics.

I also subscribe to CSPI. Overall I'm satisfied. they're good at getting attention focused on food issues. Yeah, they can be preachy but overall their advice is good and I appreciate how they separate food hype from facts, like misleading product advertising. You can still choose to buy or eat what you want, but their lists are extensive enough to give you specifics to make better choices.

I tried the Harvard newsletter a few years ago & it was OK but while the topics were interesting, somehow they never applied to me. Lots of specific medical issues. so I dropped it.
CSPI focuses on food safety, misleading advertising, restaurant food, food products in the supermarket & nutrition in general. If you can get past the (sometimes)preaching tone there's lots of information you can actually use.

I like CSPI a lot and I also like the fact that my subscription is actually a political contribution as they do lobbying for food related issues -- i.e. better labelling, getting rid of trans-fatty acids etc.

I haven't found the ones focusing on health to be particularly interesting or useful -- If you were gifting me, I would prefer a gift card to a book store where I could make my own decision as to what I wanted to read. The older I get the more I appreciate gift cards. :p

My family doesn't do well with gifts cards-- too hard to get out and find something. I have three left over from last year. I like subscriptions because they last all year. I was hoping for a decent one on health, more than nutrition. any other thoughts?

I love Nutrition Action (CSPI). Aside from what others have said I enjoy some of their recipes and like the fact that it's small. Weird of me but sometimes magazines just seem overwhelming and I feel obligated to them.

Another fan of CSPI's Nutrition Action! I've subscribed for about 12 years now (and I still have every issue!). I've given it as a gift several times and it was very well-received.
