I feel silly asking this: is hoisin sauce different than oyster sauce? Can anyone tell me what the difference is? I am making a marinade for a shrimp dish and it calls for hoisin sauce. Where can I find it, too? I looked in the asian section at my grocery store with no luck.

The two are not the same. The label on mine (Hoisin Sauce) says it contains:

sugar, fermented soybeans, water, rice vinegar, wheat flour, prune concentrate, salt, tomato paste, lemon juice, caramel color, chili pepper, natural flavor

I find it in the asian section, and the only one available when I bought my jar was "TY LING" brand.

Hoisin Sauce is not the same as Oyster Sauce. Oyster is obviously a type of fish sauce, and Hoisin is a Plum Sauce. It should be very easy to find. In my area, SunLuck is the easiest-to-find brand. Usually in jars next to the soy sauce and teriyaki sauces! I'd ask the grocer! If you have a 'Cost Plus World Market' anywhere near you, they also carry a great selection of Asian and Indian Spices. I noticed you're in Pittsburgh. Giant Eagle has a good selection of Asian spices. Every time I visit the MIL back there in Upper St. Clair she begs me to make an Asian dinner, and I always shop at Giant Eagle! Good luck!
