(or whipped cream). Would it be ok to use dream whip and how many of the envelopes would I need for 12-16 ounces? 1 1/2 to 2 cups right? I think 1 envelope will be enough as it makes 2 cups. I want to make a cheesecake that calls for cool whip and don't have any but I have dream whip and have never substituted ingredients, I have always went and got the right thing from the store or found something else to make and I really want to try this cheesecake.

Not an expert on this by any means, but I would think you could make the sub. The amount is what I am not sure of. I have an 8 oz carton lingering in my freezer, and I would think that it is at least 2 cups.

Back to report that I checked the carton and their website. They don't want you to measure it -- just buy it by the tub. :D The nutritional info says 25 servings of 2 T each in an 8 oz tub, so that is going to be pretty close to 1-3/4 cups. I would use 2 envelopes.

Now you're becoming a "true cook". You're learning to use what you have in the cabinet or refrigerator. The only time I follow a recipe exactly is when I'm baking - flour & leavening agents are things I don't mess with. But anything else is fair game.

Go with Beth's measurements & recommendations. The Dream Whip should be fine. That used to be all we had 30 yrs. ago or so BCW (before cool whip). Have fun!
