Here I go again, starting the December thread. :o My knitting group got together last night and it has inspired me to do so again. We met at a brand new craft store (with the beginnings of a good yarn selection) and the owner had cookies and lemonade for us and asked us questions on what can be done to improve the department. I'm currently working on a red elongated stitch scarf for my roomie's Christmas present and I have 4 inches left to go on the 1st panel of the following poncho:

http://www.coatsandclark.com/fun_and_free/yarn/quick_knit_shawl.htm

I had been coveting this and when the yarn was on sale a couple of weeks ago for 50% off at Michael's, I just had to make it. After the holidays, I'm going to try the Tie One On from Knitty.

So, what are you all working on? ;)

That poncho looks like fun. I bought yarn to make the alien scarves, but I'm not sure when I'll be able to start on them. I need the guys to go camping again! ;)

I am working on a scarf for myself (peach, cream, tan). Nothing fancy.

Then I will move on to either learning to make socks, a hat, or to crochet.
My knitting skills are very basic, but I love doing it!

And, we just had a new yarn store open, The Knaughty Knitter, and I LOVE IT! I am planning no hanging out there over the winter break to relax and knit in good company.

I'm working on a poncho as a Christmas present for my niece. I had to frog a bunch of it because I just couldn't get gauge close enough. I'm a type-A tight knitter! :)

I'm still working on my Trekking socks. I have been having a little bit of a problem turning the heel without getting that "hole".

BTW --- there is a short article in this month's National Geographic about knitting socks. :)

I finished my first sock! I used a booklet called Learn To Knit Socks. It has really clear instructions. I'm up to the heel in the second one.

I've started two hats now for DF...both disasters. I finally broke down and bought a book called Andean Folk Knits today from Amazon because I want to knit him a chullo and there's a pattern in there for one. I knitted the one on Knitty, got all the way to the end, and it's too small. It's because I tried to enlarge a "one-size-fits-all" hat, and I guess he has a super big head.

I finished my first sock!

Congratulations! Socks are so much fun!

I think I've done 30 pair in the last 2 years. Since I live in Florida I don't have much use for too many sweaters, but socks!!! You can never have too many socks. :D

I just started knitting again over Thanksgiving after a little break starting last May. I decided to knit scarves for my niece and nephews. But for some reason my scarves always curl in... I haven't been able to figure out what I am doing wrong- I use to think I was pulling it to tight so I loosened it up and it still curls... Any ideas? One lady told me to just stack books on it when I am done to flatten it but that is really only temporary.

What stitch pattern are you using? If the edges are in stockinette stitch, they will curl. Sometimes garter stitch curls, too. Blocking should take care of the curling, although I've never tried to block a stockinette edge.

I don't know how well-versed you are in knitting terminology, so don't be offended if you already know this stuff! ;)

Stockinette stich is when you knit one row, purl the next row, knit the next row, etc. Garter stitch is when you knit every row.

I don't think heavy books would do the trick. To block, you rinse the scarf in cold water, gently squeeze the excess water out (don't wring it!!!), then lay it on a folded towel. Roll the scarf up in the towel, squeezing along the way, letting the towel absorb more excess water. Then unroll, and lay flat on a dry surface, shaping and flattening it so it looks how you want. Then just let it air dry. It should keep its shape as it dries.

I made a rolled-brim hat using all stockinette stitch; that's how I know it curls (makes a nice rolled brim!)

I am so excited to finally join this thread. I have read previous threads with envy and interest, and finally decided that I needed to start and quit putting it off. I haven't knitted in 15 years  , and only then finished an afghan for my mom. DS asked for a purple sweater for Christmas-how do you explain to a 5 year old that purple does not seem to be the "it" color this year? So I decided to knit him one, using the very easy Guideposts Sweater project pattern. I met a nice lady who works at Michael's who got me started, and when I get up to the sleeves she told me to come in and she will help me.

Wendy, that poncho and yarn is gorgeous.

I finished my first-ever socks using the tutorial here: http://www.cometosilver.com/socks/SockClass_Beginning.htm

They are a bit big, I used size 3 DPNs and am making some lace socks using size 1's this time. Hopefully I won't go blind doing this!

I'm trying to finish the scarf I started a month ago, but scarves lose my interest about halfway through.

Beth

how do you explain to a 5 year old that purple does not seem to be the "it" color this year?

First of all, 5 year olds don't care. If it is their favorite color of the moment, it's in. Second, a lot of guys never outgrow that -- you may have to get used to that. But third, I have seen a lot of purple in a lot of things lately (no longer shop for kids though).

Wendy, I went into Michael's for something else this evening and had forgotten about the half priced yarn. They didn't have enough for me to make that poncho, but I got a raincheck. I didn't know they did that! I was going to make it for myself, so I wouldn't have time to start on it for a couple of weeks or maybe after Christmas. I love that yarn -- it feels so lucious. What color did you get?

I just learned to knit this weekend! Very exciting as I've been wanting to learn for the past year. Now I think I'm addicted.. I just can't stop. Anyway, it's going to be a short scarf with a hole in one end so you can stuff the un-holey end through the hole and have sort of a neck warmer.

I am SO GLAD to have you guys to gush to! I finally finished a BLANKET that I knitted for a friend's wedding -- that's this weekend. :) It's a throw that's about 3' x 5' with alternating stockingette and dyo (big loopy holes) sections. I even made big, fat tassels for each corner! I'm about to clear off my table so I can block this baby, package it up, and give it away ... I'll take photos, I promise.

It's so soft. I almost don't want to give it away, but I'm excited to. It's the first thing I made on circular needles (11's), used a "real" pattern (meaning I bought it!), and it's certainly bigger and heavier than anything else I've made. YAY!

It's a pattern that calls for Patons Divine, but when I started the project, I found that JoAnn's had their Angel Hair on sale for cheaper than the Divine. I ended up needing 10 skeins, so I'm glad that I went with the slightly cheaper one. I used the Angel Hair in Forest Green ...

Well, now that I have this great new hobby and am mostly finished with my scarf I'm wondering what I'll move onto next. Obviously, I want to learn something beyond the one stich I know.. Does anyone have any suggestions for good learning books? I'm afraid the patterns on knitty are a little too complex for my very basic skills.. and I could use some more instruction (and maybe a book for reference) before I dive into them.

Thanks in advance!

Stitch 'N B1tch!!! Stitch 'N B1tch!!! That's how I tught myself how to knit, as have scads of other obsessed knitters! It's by Debbie Stoller.

You should be able to find it in any knitting store, and probably most craft stores. Certainly in big bookstores, and definitely Amazon. Enjoy!

Hey Knitters!
I've not stopped by in a long time but I'm still knitting. Do wish I had more time to do so, however :(
My biggest knitting news is that I trained myself to knit righty rather than lefty. Patterns are written for right handed knitters, so if I wanted to progess to more complicated patterns, I needed to make the switch.
I recently finished a Booga bag and I took a mini-lesson on magic loop, so I'm finishing a baby hat on those needles for a co-workers baby.
Also, this weekend 7 of us women friends from work are going to Vermont to spend the weekend knitting! The person who has in-laws with the house is not a knitter, but she will be by the end of the weekend. It will be so great to get away, knit around a big fire place with a big window facing the mountains! YAY! I am planning on attacking my 1st pair of socks. Got some nice purple sock yarn.
My sister was also invited and we are cooking there Sat night for the group and it will be an Italian menu (reason for my Bolognese sauce thread) . Should be fun, can't wait.
Happy knitting everyone.

note to newsomz: New knitters should definitely go to www.knittinghelp.com

Not only do they have videos (which are MUCH more helpful than any book for people like me), but there are patterns, discussion boards, and links to great yarn sites. I have learned everything about knitting other than knit, purl, and bind-off from this site. You can buy a CD with the videos, but if you have cable or DSL this free site is just fine.

I finished a pair of mittens tonight. They are made out of inexpensive worsted weight yarn in an invory tweed color. I think the yarn is Red Heart brand. It's something I've had sitting around for awhile.

I also started the Lion Brand freebie SHIPS hat to go along with the mittens.

We are going to the ICE display at the Gaylord Palms on Christmas day. They will provide a coat, but they suggest you bring your own hat and gloves since it is 9° inside. (That's darn cold to this Florida girl. LOL)

I could upload a picture if I could figure it out. Maybe I'll give it a try tomorrow. :o

My friend Anne apparently is tired of me whining for a new scarf, so for my Xmas gift she gave me a pair of #11 needles, some yarn, an instruction book, a measuring tape and links to some instructional video!

The videos on http://www.knittinghelp.com/ are very handy. Especially when I couldn't tell in the book which needle was on top, and which was on the bottom!

So, I knitted about 15" of a scarf on my "practice" ball of yarn. But I made it too wide, and am tempted to undo the whole thing and start over, making it skinnier. Also, I can see that my ability to control the tension is changing -- the scarf seems to have gotten wider!

This if FUN!

Beth
12-12-2005, 06:22 PM
Amy, the scarf getting a little wider may be a good thing. Beginners tend to hold the yarn very tightly and knit too tight. Getting wider would seem to indicate that you are relaxing and getting the hang of the stitches. Assuming you still have the same number of stitches on the needles, that is. If not -- that's another story. :)

Everyone's projects sound great! I am making some scarves for gifts. I am just doing garter stitch, but the yarns are pretty and I think I'm going to add embellishments after..beads or felt flowers or ribbon trim or something like that. There's a GREAT store here called La Droguerie that has TONS of that kind of stuff! They have knitting supplies too, although not as many yarns as regular yarn stores.

Mary Kate, that blanket is great! Such a nice gift. Don't worry about increasing and decreasing, it is EASY and I am a total beginner. I made the cat bed in SNB and was surprised how easy it was!

Mary Kate,

I bought the yarn in the second week of November, and I worked on it off and on throughout the month. It was 100 stitches across, and each section was 13 rows wide. Each section took a little over 90 minutes to do, because the loopier parts tended to be harder to work with on the needles. There were 14 of those 13-row sections. It wasn't difficult, but it just took a lot of patience.

I'm thinking of doing another one because I loved it. :)

Howdy fellow knitters!
Sorry to be so absent this month but I have been KNITTING!! :D LOL!!! Tis the season!

Wendy...how is your poncho going? I love that pattern...very fluffy.

I saw the new knitty (thanks 615bride...I saw your post earlier in the month and never replied...but I did make it to the site...so a late thanks...I can never keep track of when they come out) I love the Mrs Beeton's...I have long arms so these will come in handy!! I also like the Creatures and the Tubey.

Welcome new knitters Kim and Newsomz...knittin is addictive, I agree! Newsomz...I also used the Stitch and B!tch (both of them) to learn and often reference them for techniques. Also KnittingHelp.com was mentioned...this has been a great help too!

MaryKate...your blanket is BEAUTIFUL! It is so big!! I'll bet you are done with rectangular things for now...lol!

Like I mentioned I have been busy knitting...wahoo! I finished the Alien Scarf and it turned out so neat...I love this thing just for the fact that it is so different from anything I have knit before. It rolled up A LOT after knitting...it almost looked like a tube. I blocked it just by laying it out and spraying it with water instead of dunking it...It worked perfect. I have some photos below.

I also finished a scarf for our family name trade. I used Lang Tosca yarn and loved itTosca Yarn (http://www.ramwools.com/index.cfm?pageID=3&section=17&prodID=W332) The photo shows a wide scarf...I did a k2p2 pattern that was narrower (for a guy)...it turned out so nice and it was a quick knit! I wrapped it without taking a photo of it  Oh well.

I am still working on the Ribby Cardi from Chicknits (http://www.chicknits.com/catalog/ribbycardi.html)...plugging along...maybe I will finish while it is still cold outside...lol!

Here are some photos (if they dont show up for some reason I have them all in this album My knitting album (http://members5.clubphoto.com/lisa357067/2946413/owner-f163.phtml) :

I bought the yarn to make two of the alien scarves, but they won't be made for Christmas. I was thinking of starting them and putting a few rows of each onto a set of needles so I can have both started and work on them both at the same time -- neither one will get their's first while the other one has to wait and hope I finish. I bought red and blue yarns to go with the black for them.

Before I do that, I have the last few rows of a wrist warmer and a scarf or two to finish up.

Beth
12-17-2005, 08:29 AM
I bought a different yarn. I had the one called for in my hands and then thought about the fact that wool makes me itch so much and both of my boys have sensitive skin. I asked the saleslady about a recommendation for something that wasn't all wool and possibly itchy and wasn't a cheap acrylic that would pill up and make me wish I hadn't waste my time. She suggested Plymout Yarn's Encore -- a 75% acrylic with 25% wool. It has a nice feel and is washable -- good for the boys. The yardage was less (200 yds) and the yarn was on sale, so I bought an extra skein of each. I'm thinking I might make a hat to match each scarf -- was thinking of seeing if I could knit just the eyes part of the pattern into the hat. Will have to see how large the pattern is and how it would carry over into a simple stocking cap.

Great work Everyone! Lisa, kudos on the scarf. My group got together last week for a holiday get together, complete with yarn swap, goodies and dippers for the chocolate fountain.

About that poncho... :o I am about 5" onto the 2nd panel. The 1st panel has some holes in it, but being that it is furry, I think that I can do a few tricks with yarn to cover it up. :o :o I haven't had time to pick it up and work on it for over a week. Most definitely next week as I will be off for 11 days! Can't wait. The only item on my list is a set of Denise Interchangeables.

I just bought some yarn on sale for the bobbilicious in the current Knitty and have a backstock of yarn in my stash. This is kind of a good thing because I found out last January that everyone wants to take up knitting in January and that the stores can't get the yarn and other supplies in fast enough. Since I have no idea how the heck to make a bobble, I am considering taking a projects class w/this one woman who is a really good teacher.

Happy knitting Everyone!

OK, Knitters, I need some suggestions. DF requested an "awesome" hat a while ago, and I've started and frogged two so far. I really want to make him a chullo, but every darn pattern I find is either a child's size or an adult medium, and he has a large head. I'm tired of trying to adapt a pattern to fit, because I end up miscalculating and wasting a ton of time and yarn.

SO, I'm looking to you for "awesome" men's hat patterns. I can do multicolored, patterned, etc. And it doesn't have to be a chullo, either (but that would be nice!)

Any suggestions? Thank in advance!!!!

PS I LOVE those Alien scarves...

Ah, that's where we are different. DH says I hardly ever follow a recipe, and I have a tendency to just make stuff up in the kitchen and on the needles.

If you have the guage, you could knit a swatch and see how much different one needle size make the piece over 3 or 4 inches. Also, if there is some stretch to the finished hat, it shouldn't need to be exact. I have rewritten patterns too, but I understand that sometimes you just don't want to have to worry with it. I remember posting last year about just wanting to make something "by the book" because everything had been in different yarns or requiring some kind of translation. That was when I made the booga bag and was delighted to find the Kuryon yarn so I din't have to adapt a thing.

Good luck either way.

I don't know where you've looked for hat patterns, but there are some here:

I was looking for a hat I saw recently that Rebecca may be interested in (I havent found it :( )but came across this hat that looks so fun (not for a guy but I got sidetracked! :D )

Tannenbaum hat (http://chappysmom.typepad.com/bookworm/2005/11/tannenbaum.html)

Is that fun or what?

Sorry for the hijack ......but can anyone help me with a picture problem. I posted the moose, mittens and hat and the picture is huge! How do I size it down. I tried one thing and ended up with a thumbnail size picture.

HEEEELLLLPPPPP! (Please :o )

Maybe one of these will work?

Well I am a little embarassed to post, especially since in my first and only post on this thread I mentioned how excited I was to be knitting, and how I was making a sweater for DS for Christmas, but it is nowhere near finished. Unless I were to knit from now until Christmas nonstop, I could not get it done. Fortunately, he is receiving other presents, and he does not know about this one. But still I am disappointed.

I have really enjoyed reading this thread and seeing all that you are knitting.

Hi Dee!
I see your moose, mitten and hat photo...it is about 2x3 inches...did you want it bigger or did you figure it out? I use ClubPhoto and they will let me link to a lower resolution photo instead of the full size one (which is HUGE!)

Let us know if you havent figured it out!

Lisa,

I haven't figured it out, but today the picture is sized right. When I first posted it, it was HUGE and made the rest of the posts "jog" funny. Today when I signed back on it was the proper size. Go figure. (I'm using Photobucket.)

We'll see what happens the next time I want to post a picture from my digital camera. Maybe I'll move over to Club Photo. Is that a free site too?

Me too :) A friend just lent me a copy of an "easy knitting" mag- I think it's a Woman's Day? I know it's not on the shelves any longer.
If you can't find an easy pattern online, I can scan this one and send to you tomorrow. Just PM your email addy.

On my needles now is what the owner of a LYS calls the Potato Chip Scarf. It's the twisted one, the pattern is called "Ruffles", hence the chip reference!

If you are a real beginner, I highly recommend the tutorial at this website:

Silver's Sock Tutorial (http://www.cometosilver.com/socks/SockClass_Beginning.htm)

I have made only 3 pairs of socks, and I used this pattern for the first two pairs. It's very, very detailed with good pictures!
