It is killing me to hear all of you talk about these wonderful stores! In Birmingham we have great grocery stores that are clean and well-stocked, but these specialty stores sound like so much fun! Even if I don't buy anything, these are the kinds of stores that I love to simply browse around in...taking in the sights and smells. Enjoy, friends...and remember those of us in America's smaller cities that are living vicariously through you all!!!

I can truly sympathize with you guys -- I spent 18 years (okay, so for 2/3 of the time I wasn't cooking much of anything) in a town where you can't find arugula or watercress, let alone bulghur or God forbid, any amazing cheeses. My sister, who still lives at home, sends instructions for me to bring her quinoa and whole wheat shaped pastas when I come to visit. I was excited to be in Chapel Hill in college, where there was a Wellspring (an offshoot of Whole Foods), and now I'm sure I won't ever be able to tear myself away from big-city living again after having Whole Foods and Harry's right at my fingertips.

Ditto on the jealousy. Even though I love living in Hawaii, the Commissaries here leave a lot to be desired if you like out of the ordinary foodstuffs and the local groceries are soooo expensive even compared to living in NYC.
